love BM had the 940 for 4 years lasted the whole time in my construction jobs cant say spyderco lasted blade dulled out real fast and the tip snapped off when my buddy was using it
My 520 has a lot of wiggle and I have barely used it. Same with a few other BM. I own far more Spydercos and not had that issue once. Benchmade has some QC problems.
@newcoyote - Fascinating. Over the years I've read of owners who have the opposite where all their BM are tight and their Spydercos are not up to snuff. It's weird how that comes in clusters for some people. Imo though, I believe I've seen more ppl unhappy with BM QC than Spyderco.
@akayakaa Yes. I also know that it is a fine balance between eliminating blade play and having the deployment become too stiff. Thanks for the offer though.
@cacau62 I always like to give a company a chance to make good. Since my original comment, I have tried a few more. The last was a 940. I heard so many good things about that knife. It came skin pressing dull and so much blade play, no amount of pivot adjusting fixed it.This for a $200 piece? Nope. I'm done with BM too. They look nice but can not hold a candle to the performance of Spyderco. I like to actually use my knives.
@CanadianPatriot86 - It would def be my choice for an impact device over the grip, but I think when it comes to normal knife usage forces, the difference in strength isn't a concern. You'd see more usable differences in the blade profile and edge holding.
I like your take on the 520, it is really comfortable but yet to purchase one, maybe some day, just picked up a Military despite thinking it looked a bit goofy but that initial impression vanished once I had it my hands and EDC for a few days, love it, best production knife I own and I've had many from BM, ZT and Kershaw
@quicktoevil -cool, always good to hear the military stacks up well to other good blades. The 520 is kinda of like the fat heavy brother to the military, great for when your brain wants some axis lock.
I was deciding long and hard between the presidio and griptilian. I realized the presidio might damage my dress pants so I went with the grip. Excellent video, one day I'll get one.
honestly, I would say not much. I mean my grip scales flex a bit and then there's the weight thing between the two, which perhaps just adds up to that old mentality that heft is tougher.
I got this knife a few days ago and overall I really like it. It did not come as sharp as my previous benchmades. No problem though a little time spent with the sharp maker and all is good. It has a little blade play to it. Did yours? I did tighten up the screw. No more blade play but now it's damn hard/imposssible to close with wrist aciton. I'm thinking bout sending it back to benchmade. I'm a little dissapointied with a knife this expensive. I have 4 other benchmades and none have blade play.
Hi tj, no play for me luckily. Yah I would prolly try some lube and work it a bit to see if you can find a nice point between the pivot tightness and opening ability. But I feel your concern. The 520 is supposed to be tank, I would want it so as well. Hope it turns out well for you.
i have one of these bad mothers with a tanto. i keep it on my nightstand, right next to the surefire g2. its incredibly comfrtable. its heavy and big, but i like the bulk. it fills the hand and feels more substantial. loosen the pivot screw just a tad, and it opens real fast
In gripping and use its simply grippy. The alum has a tacky surface all over, but the ridges down the middle..go against them and you will feel it. This is the part that ends up rubbing on the pocket even tho the middle ridges are flattened.
Thanks SpydieDave! yah it's mean on the pockets for sure. I was seriously going to grate some cheese or something with the knife, but thought that would be too messy! lol
I REALLY LIKE THE 5270 AUTO MINI BUT THERE ISN'T ANT REVIEWS OUT THERE ON IT .

@newcoyote You are aware you are supposed to adjust the main pivot screw every once in a while, aren't you?

I bought a BM 520 and when I was carving a plastic piece, it´s tip brokes...
I wrote twice to Benchmade, but they never answered, so, I never will buy another BM.

im guessing this would be tougher than the ritter grip since it has full steel liners, rather than the dinky ones grips have? could be wrong though.

Great vid man. I have one, and I have a tough time carrying it because it's a pocket shredder.
I do love how it feels in the hand though. Great knife.
