I can see that, at first, Kinect will be mostly for mini-games, but later I'm sure there are problem solvers out there that can make it a possibility for an FPS to use Kinect. It's not impossible to use a controller and Kinect at the same time.

The technology just isn't there and them adding something like a wii clone doesn't really undermine anything considering the main titles won't be using it and it's optional. It's just to reach those gamers who can't handle sketchy controls for games like these, like using a controller or joystick instead of the wiimote for wii fighting games. I think it has plenty of potential for it's target audience, which is children and family gaming lovers.

@ccjwarner Natal will be forcefully inserted into mainstream games wether we like it or not, the technology is impressive as HELL but i won't do much for us "hardcore" gamers since it's really only useful for casual mini-games and cool interfaces. If you can solve moving, shooting, jumping and aiming AT THE SAME TIME only using natal "kinect" i will accept it as the future of gaming, as it is now it's just a big step in motion control evolution.

@gunsbl4zin and for you, the PROJECT NATAL watches body parts, even if you bought a fake gun, natal cannot read what your holding without a software upgrade, which they cant do because eventually the camara would start reading everything that it sees as something to read, which will cause lag, and will cause ur cat moving across the screen to fuck up your game. so it wouldent work that way.
@MichelisArchangeli the natal reads the shapes of body parts. So it won't read your cat. if you held a gun, it would block your body, causing natat to fuck up. But, if they made a specific shape gun and updated it to read that shape as such, it would work. so its cat safe.
this is fake, because while he is indeed making the hand motions to move the screen around, or "look", he is making no motion to move, so unless it can read your mind, this is definately fake. and @cusumanomichael the reason this product is looked down apon, is the fact that its only use is minigames. because you cannot cross a landscape without moonwalking to move forwards. unless you live in a castle.
@MichelisArchangeli, you don't have to have a castle to walk around in a game. If you think about it you can easily use special motions to walk forward. for example instead of walking forward untill you knock over your tv screen, maybe move your left hand forward or backward, or maybe even your fingers. Of all the motions our lazy gamer bodies can make I'm sure that they can come up with some movement we can make to walk forward rather than actually walking.
I think this whole system is pretty interesting. Sure no one will ever be able to compete with a PC gamer, but if Microsoft can pull off an fps with this thing at all that would convince me. Plus, it's not like you have to play on xbox to be a hard core gamer.

Natal is not only limited to games, but you can also use it to browse your xbox and a big update will be released with project natal to have those cool new things.

@cusumanomichael i have played games for many hours solid and i do play them daily and i know that some devices such as an arcade stick/anologue stick fps extensions can cause strain on the had area. but i can only imagine how much worse that would be getting that sort of strain on your elbows and thus your arm and shoulder plates.

I can install linux on my cellphone, my router, my modem, my lcd panel OSD, my car's ecu, and my coffee machine. The ability to install linux on a machine does not make the machine a PC gaming computer.
Architectures are not similar, in one you can do massive amounts of work at the same time but you do them slowly and with low precision(gpu) and in the other you can only do one thing after another at a very fast pace and with great precision(cpu)
I am an Xbox360 owner and I do not own a Ps3, still, this... definitely looks not just weird, but very complicated. As for now, I dig the Arc (Sony's device) more. It seems to actually be working.
sonys motion controls have a much more broad use they can be for casual or hardcore i dont see how natal will compensate for certain movements or abilities , but sony's on the other hand have the potential to make rts games and mmos and any pc inclined gameplay happen on the console

A huge part of natal is not about gaming control itself, but about voice recognition, UI navigation, and video communication with xbox live friends. @IIKiboshIl 1 second is a huge in advantage in FPS's because if the target move your shoot fails. Natal gives you at least one more second to line up and fire.

@maxgunn555 Haha, look, I never said that "someone will make kinect able to do everything", I just said that I am 100% positive that there are people out there that can solve some of the problems that come with Kinect. I can see that, at first, Kinect will be mostly for mini-games, but later I'm sure there are problem solvers out there that can make it a possibility for an FPS to use Kinect. It's not impossible to use a controller and Kinect at the same time.

Or maybe Microsoft will make a universal controller for the Kinect for certain types of games, such as FPS. All you are saying once again is that it is impossible for the Kinect to do much of anything other than play mini-games. Maybe they'll make a Wii-type controller, where you can move your arms but still use a controller, think of the possibilities

@iMieaniT you are ridiculous. if MS make it so that kinect works with a load of add ons such as plastic guns for fps. driving wheel for driving e.t.c then that goes against their whole idea of NO CONTROLLER REQUIRED - YOU ARE THE BODY. not to mention the additional cost. if kinect stays true to its purpose ie 'you are the controller' then all your getting is minigames if it compeltely ripps off the wii and playstation move then you may get some non minigames at an extra cost.

The technology just isn't there and them adding something like a wii clone doesn't really undermine anything considering the main titles won't be using it and it's optional. It's just to reach those gamers who can't handle sketchy controls for games like these, like using a controller or joystick instead of the wiimote for wii fighting games. I think it has plenty of potential for it's target audience, which is children and family gaming lovers.

@HikageNoAijou i agree with last point. all i'm saying is this kinect can only play minigames ie games on rails, in no game will you be able to FREELY move as you are limited to yoru living room no to mention that teh camera has a 3m capacity. if they add in plastic perhipherals then it is no longer kinect as kinect's purpose is 'you are hte controller'. everyone else who's argued with me about that point is fucking stupid and should take an iq test immediately to see how damaged their brain is.

@ccjwarner Natal will be forcefully inserted into mainstream games wether we like it or not, the technology is impressive as HELL but i won't do much for us "hardcore" gamers since it's really only useful for casual mini-games and cool interfaces. If you can solve moving, shooting, jumping and aiming AT THE SAME TIME only using natal "kinect" i will accept it as the future of gaming, as it is now it's just a big step in motion control evolution.

@gunsbl4zin and for you, the PROJECT NATAL watches body parts, even if you bought a fake gun, natal cannot read what your holding without a software upgrade, which they cant do because eventually the camara would start reading everything that it sees as something to read, which will cause lag, and will cause ur cat moving across the screen to fuck up your game. so it wouldent work that way.

If you think about it you can easily use special motions to walk forward. for example instead of walking forward untill you knock over your tv screen, maybe move your left hand forward or backward, or maybe even your fingers. Of all the motions our lazy gamer bodies can make I'm sure that they can come up with some movement we can make to walk forward rather than actually walking.

Natal is not only limited to games, but you can also use it to browse your xbox and a big update will be released with project natal to have those cool new things.
but i think most of the games will require you to use your feet, but hey, if you don't want it, don't buy it.

Imagine playing Halo Reach with Natal, it wont work for shit!, because its a fast pace shooter designed for controllers, and not for body motion tracking.
Project Natal will have games that are completely intteractive with Body motion, and that requires your body as a controller..

Video games with controllers put strain on your fingers and wrists, especially the newer controllers with thumb sticks. The strain on your thumbs moving constantly in different directions for long periods of time can cause many more problems than you could afford. So I don't think anyone is worried about an elbow.

Again, if us gamers are aware of the risks we take when playing games, regardless of what platform, and still play for many hours on end, I don't think that any of us are worried about what body part is affected, or what kind of movement it took to make it possible.

You have made it pretty clear that personal injury is a major factor for you in deciding what type of hobbies you partake in. I would suggest taking up something less... injury prone than gaming, or sports, or even typing letters online for that fact. Typing for long periods of time have been know to cause arthritis.

It is also designed to play games that is compatable with it. how do you make your character jump?? playing HALO reach on natal in multiplayer online will suck man. im not really into this motion stuffs since i play mostly rpg's and hack/slash games not much FPS so ill be waiting for 3-D instead of this 1.

Consoles are Personal Computers?
Consoles are built with IBM's PowerPC architecture and are used for massively parallel applications.
The computers you and I use are designed general purpose computing. ie extremely accurate floating point operations.
Console's are much closer to our video cards than they will ever be with a intel or amd processor.
I agree with the mouse + keyboard superiority but this video is about removing controllers all together.

I can install linux on my cellphone, my router, my modem, my lcd panel OSD, my car's ecu, and my coffee machine. The ability to install linux on a machine does not make the machine a PC gaming computer.
Architectures are not similar, in one you can do massive amounts of work at the same time but you do them slowly and with low precision(gpu) and in the other you can only do one thing after another at a very fast pace and with great precision(cpu)

I am an Xbox360 owner and I do not own a Ps3, still, this... definitely looks not just weird, but very complicated. As for now, I dig the Arc (Sony's device) more. It seems to actually be working.

sonys motion controls have a much more broad use they can be for casual or hardcore i dont see how natal will compensate for certain movements or abilities , but sony's on the other hand have the potential to make rts games and mmos and any pc inclined gameplay happen on the console
im definitely rooting for sony they actually already have a rts game coming out this year that will use the motion controllers its called under siege and it looks good

There's just no way to give a direct input to aiming on a console.
You could try plugging a mouse in an XBOX360 or Wii, and then maybe FPS games would be playable.
Sadly, with a controller, you will always get absolutely owned by PC gamers.
That's why there's no PC-XBOX360 Online FPS integration.
Because the console gamers would get owned all day.

Ps3 has a mouse and keyboard controller, not sure if its conpatable with xbox or even if it is any good. I heard it has rumble so thats a good thing.

I'd have to agree with the other comments.
No serious gamer would ever use Natal to play proper games.
This is more useful for controlling your TV, Stereo, or other household appliances from a distance without having to move.
But there's no way any serious gamer is ever going to be any good using this in an FPS.
Infact, anyone who uses Natal in an FPS, will get DESTROYED.
Mouse + Keyboard will always be the best.
There's no way to beat it - unless you bring in "mind readers".

Additionally it seems like this device would totally ostracize the PC gamer crowd. People spend many hours training their hands to react by muscle memory rather than thought. Using your hand like that could easily fuck up your mouse gaming accuracy.

@COG287PR you would spend money on natal as a hardcore gamer just for the UI control options that it offers. A huge part of natal is not about gaming control itself, but about voice recognition, UI navigation, and video communication with xbox live friends. Plus, hardcore gamers will obviously be attracted by the headtracking capability that natal will offer. duh.

@IIKiboshIl 1 second is a huge in advantage in FPS's because if the target move your shoot fails. Natal gives you at least one more second to line up and fire.
