Black smoke is cool and all, but all that is just wasted fuel. I mean, of course if you have a shitload of hp and torque, there's no way to control that smoke. So in this case, HELL YEAH SMOKE IT! But if you have a tuner and maybe an intake, and you're blowing smoke, there's something wrong, you're also losing power.

@fireman549549 cummins is not anything what it used to be. theirs just more potential in a V block diesel, who new but its kind of true. why do you think alot of companys use V6 cat engines to power their buildings or hospitals when the power goes out. Inline engines are for more economical. Its going to take alot to get large amounts of power from an inline engine, pretty soon the new D-maxs and Powerstrokes wont need upgrades for more power

Under normal cruise conditions there is next to no PM2.5 emissions. and remove any converters from any car and you're going to get pollution up the ying yang. The new ceramic converts thats are being put on diesels allow them to meet very strict emission standards. This big badass diesel is the least of our worries.

Do diesels have blow off valves? It just seems like it's spool up, and all the boost isn't being let off. Is it because diesels run at slower rpms? No, diesels do not have blow off valves because there is no throttle. Diesel engines take in all the air you can give them, acceleration/power is provided by more fuel.
Show me one diesel that has a BOV from the factory. There is no throttle plate, thus, no reason for a BOV. Some diesels have wastegates on the turbo to prevent overboost, others are of a VNT design. Not the same as a BOV.

Every internal combustion engine releases carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The mixture being rich means there is more fuel than air which means there is even more pollutants being spewed into the air than normal. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks vehicles don't pollute.
This truck is less polluting than a POS little Prius. My TDI Beetle puts out a nice cloud of smoke too if I romp on it, and it is WAY less polluting than a Prius. It also gets 50 mpg average on mixed driving...no batteries required.

Yes it is wasted energy but it does mean more power! The air/fuel ratio for diesel (to get a complete burn and most efficiency out of your fuel) is about 15:1, about the same as gasoline (14.7:1). However, to get the best thermal efficiency (and make the most power) it needs to be about 40-50% more than that...... so though in this video it may be a little excessive, to make the most power you should have some black smoke
This engine is making almost twice the power with nearly the same displacement.
What the original poster meant was that as a diesel reaches the air fuel ratio where max power is made, there will be smoke. To clean it up you either have to increase air or reduce fuel. Max power and max eff are all at different air fuel ratios. A diesel will start to smoke at around 20:1 its stoich ratio is ~14.5 and max power is richer than that!
To make the most power with the air you have you will make smoke.
Smoke will get you an immediate black flag in that type of racing. Hence the Audi and Peugot diesels run clean. Also, in endurance racing you're not necessarily looking for maximum power out of the engine. You want the engine to stay together for 24hrs of hard driving.

Nothing like watching a tractor at high revs; tons of black smoke, a whistling turbo and not much else. Try a high compression big block- horse power AND torque = performance. If I wanted to play with a tractor I'd have stayed on the farm.
big block gas wont get that kind of torque, if hes puttin out 1000hp hes lookin at around 18-2000 ftlbs. you would need about 1500-2000hp to get that torque out of a gasser.
I drive a 2004 Duramax diesel chevy 2500hd and My freeze plug got replaced bc my engine got hot and they put the new one in and it popped out again they are trying to say I have a cracked head cylinder but sum people said I dont because theres no water in my oil and there is no white smoke cumin out like it would if it was cracked so do you think there not pushing my freeze plugs in all the way?? can anybody please help me

@2iBMX - This is not the example of a "clean" diesel. The black smoke is unburned fuel. Diesel is clean when the black smoke is absent, otherwise it is equally as instrumental to smog formation. This isn't a Jetta TDi.
Contrary to your comment, Hybrids DO have a centralized production line. BUT, their batteries are immensely harmful.
The end of your comment shows oversimplification and obvious misunderstanding of the environment. This vehicle is worse for the environment than the avg gas car.

not so much a better tune as just wasted energy... black diesel sut is a sign of inefficency meaning all the fuel isnt being burned hence the black cloud of smoke... yea it may look really cool to alot of guy thinkin oh man thats awesome look at all the black smoke i make that must mean huge power... when really it means your A) wasting alot of diesel fuel and B) your engine is being very inefficent.

Yes it is wasted energy but it does mean more power! The air/fuel ratio for diesel (to get a complete burn and most efficiency out of your fuel) is about 15:1, about the same as gasoline (14.7:1). However, to get the best thermal efficiency (and make the most power) it needs to be about 40-50% more than that...... so though in this video it may be a little excessive, to make the most power you should have some black smoke

This engine is making almost twice the power with nearly the same displacement.
What the original poster meant was that as a diesel reaches the air fuel ratio where max power is made, there will be smoke. To clean it up you either have to increase air or reduce fuel. Max power and max eff are all at different air fuel ratios. A diesel will start to smoke at around 20:1 its stoich ratio is ~14.5 and max power is richer than that!
To make the most power with the air you have you will make smoke.

Smoke will get you an immediate black flag in that type of racing. Hence the Audi and Peugot diesels run clean. Also, in endurance racing you're not necessarily looking for maximum power out of the engine. You want the engine to stay together for 24hrs of hard driving.

Yeah, it blows huge black clouds, and damn is that cool. If you look at almost every high-power diesel truck, it blows smoke, and I was merely remarking on the fact that the Banks truck makes power without blowing smoke. Whether it does so via huge nitrous or not is irrelevant to my observation.

Nothing like watching a tractor at high revs; tons of black smoke, a whistling turbo and not much else. Try a high compression big block- horse power AND torque = performance. If I wanted to play with a tractor I'd have stayed on the farm.

big block gas wont get that kind of torque, if hes puttin out 1000hp hes lookin at around 18-2000 ftlbs. you would need about 1500-2000hp to get that torque out of a gasser.

I drive a 2004 Duramax diesel chevy 2500hd and My freeze plug got replaced bc my engine got hot and they put the new one in and it popped out again they are trying to say I have a cracked head cylinder but sum people said I dont because theres no water in my oil and there is no white smoke cumin out like it would if it was cracked so do you think there not pushing my freeze plugs in all the way?? can anybody please help me

btw- very nice xj. is it a classic or sport? mine looks similar to that. it is that same mettalic blue but i dont have an aftermarket bumper yet.... you got a 4.5 in lift maybe? mine is 3" at the moment. i plan putting on a 3.5" addaleaf in the rear leafs and get 6.5" coils from rustys offroad. if yours is 4.5 do you have any transfercase problems. cuz usually after 4.5 your gonna need a sye. i got 31" truxus on mine hbu?
