This was when there were still awesome rock bands roaming the planet... The Who, Pink Floyd, Rainbow, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult. They were the dinosaurs of rock and they are almost extinct now.
Is it me, or does this seem like the audio and video are disjointed, in their timing, on this? Something just seem funny about this. I am probably just being over-analytical, though.
@badhead To be fair, listen to the studio version. It's the synthesizer programming that's running a little too fast. So, it sounds like he adjusted by playing 8th notes on the hi-hat to match the tempo of that. On the studio version, he plays quarter notes on the hi-hat. That can also make the song feel like it's faster. Considering that they cut about 20+ seconds off the song's intro, he's only off a couple of seconds for the entire 5 minute song.
People talk about "rock" & "punk" like they're characters in a play! "Then rock did this, then punk said that!" Rubbish I say! The Who says shut the fuck up and just play some music already!!
Sure they're having timing issues, they're probably on a lot of blow-wasn't this concert with the Grateful Dead? And you know what punk did that was best of all? It got people like the Who pulling out their Eddie Cochran records again-and anytime you can play a more rockin' guitar solo than Steve Jones, film it and put it up, I'll be all ears.
Bit harsh Tom. If you had said that we were knee-deep in shit by 1988 I would agree entirely. The likes of Ultravox, Spandau and to a lesser extent Queen defined the 80's glory years for me, which were 1980-87. Whilst not a Queen fan, they turned in possibly the best concert ever in Wembley 1986 - period. By 1989, thanks to SAW, Kylie and Jason had me wishing I was firmly back in 1982. 88' and '89 is the dross I believe you are referring to.
i remember having the boot l.p. version of this concert ('save the who') and wore it out. this was recorded when pete was apparently in a downward spiral of booze and coke. he looks extremely cool none the less and this was the best of the kenny jones period. he had toughened up his attack considerably. also great from this concert; wgfa, substitute, drowned and the best version of another tricky day i have ever heard. thanks for posting
Feeling "better" after getting all that off your chest? The 80s wasn't that bad - I still think it was one of the better decades musically. Think harder about the music then and how it compares to now. It's not the music - it's how we feel in ourselves!
I saw them in Dec. '82 on their supposed "farewell" tour when I was 15. Great show, Kenny Jones is a lot better drummer than he got credit for, played all the old songs just fine. They played 3 tunes from "It's Hard" but sadly nothing from "Face Dances". Would have loved to have head this live.
The link to Naked Eye in Toronto 1982 is gone. That has profoundly saddened me. Finding this video and the "Who Are You" from the same show has restored some happiness. They look and sound incredible (both the Who and the videos). Sincere thanks to you, fasima.

@artfuldodgersite it was actually Moon who played on the studio version

@SlipKid12 Actually, no. This song was recorded in 1981, two years after Moon died. Also, Jones is the drummer in the music video for the song.

punk did not make any positive contribution to the music scene.
if it did anything i killed the guitar solo for sure.
AirGuitarChampion 2 years ago
Really? Rock was just about spent before punk came along and brought it back to its stripped down roots.
Music was alive again, and felt good..come on..ELP 40 minute guitar solos, remember how bad it got?
Punk and new wave was a breath of fresh air..it sure invigorated Pete!
kurskss 2 years ago
sure the 40 minute guitar solo u speak of may be gone but what has replaced it?
lack of singing talent, cringeworthy amatuer guitar playing and bassplayers who could just about string notes together.
to be honest i think i would have preferred the 40 minute guitar solo.
