The movie had to accentuate less on the action and more on the political intrigues around Beaumont`s affair. To show much more the high places of the political power - government, secret service, diplomacy, military,etc ; instead of just sketching all that in a pedestrian way.

And Beaumont had to have a more serious adversary: really capable and well-trained agents of the French secret service. That would add much more suspense and real drama instead of the simplistic ho-hum we see.

Not agree with you. You cannot compare an American Thriller with that great French movie for two excellent reasons. It's not American, and it's not really a thriller. It's more than that. It's the story of a man who learn not to be afraid to die. Belmondo incarns a character who fears to die at the beginning when he sees his friends dying, and he successfully makes his character evolving when at the end he walks knowing he will be shot.

You can compare it to any movie, French or not. It's an action movie, plain and simple. The genre was well established. All characters are found in other movies, the ending wasn't unique either.

Mediocre movie to speak frankly.

Belmondo is as usually cheesy - with that manner of his the tough guy to be funny

at any cost.

Also - clear following of some Hollywood cliches. A car chase in front of the Eiffel Tower and no police around? Or the Wild West-type shoot out between Beaumont and Rosene?

And what about the fact that the French secret service are described as morons? Hey, Beaumont belonged to them after all ! Defeating morons - is that the great victory of the super-agent?

For that matter - the year 1973 is even yet earlier "another epoque", with approximately a decade older than 1981. And still one can unmistakebly recognize a first-class thriller ( TDayOTJackal) performed by true actors from a cheap boom-bang (LeProf) performed by mid-to sub-standard ones.

Un clin d’œil, le courage du pilote de l’hélicoptère qui se trouvant lui aussi dans la ligne de tir, il ne bouge pas d’un poil, heureusement que l’inspecteur Farges ne rate pas sa cible, pas une seule balle à coté ;o) On n’aurait pas eu cette belle fin avec l’hélico qui décolle avec la caméra embarquée.

Cette séquence est emblématique dans ce film , le spectateur est inquiet de savoir si Joss ( Jean Paul Belmondo ) va être sauvé ou non , le film se termine par la mort du héros en "durée alongée " cela provoque une certaine tristesse chez le spectateur , il ressent une certaine angoisse face à cette situation.
