@MALEVOLENT312 - Yes, he does use a pick live. In the studio it is questionable whether or not he uses a pick in the chorus and just switches to a pick for the verses. It's hard to switch like that so I just use the pick the whole way through. In the Night Version there is definitely switching happening for sure. In reference to the video, they were not playing their own instruments. That Rickenbacker wasn't John's. I read somewhere that made them uncomfortable while filming the video.
@redlandscape - It's possible that the chorus is not played with a pick...I really don't know. Either way, the verse is definitely played with a pick. The feel just isn't right without one. Also, you can definitely play some pretty funky ghost notes with a pick. It's more about the muting with your fingering hand really.
@zumazmusic I think it's the same as in Hold Back The Rain....in the studio, JT could record the bass in 2 takes....one for the verse with the pick and one for the chorus without using one....but he's definitely played it with a pick in the live performances :)
By the way: I love your bass work on this one :) keep up the great work :)
@zumazmusic John was just a 'lad' when he recorded it.. a 'lass' is a female :-))) LOVE THIS SO MUCH!... Saw them live last tuesday and on Friday in Atlanta.. I was right in front of John.. he is MESMERISING to watch.. hearing that bass line so up close gave me multiple goosebumps!
I just can't get the hang of using a pick on a bass lol... but then again never used a pick... need lots more practice I do, I have always loved Duran Duran and John Taylors bass
@spyderkiller7 - It's not a matter of NOT being able to play it without a pick. In my opinion, to get the feel of this song to sound genuine, you must use a pick. I played it for years without one and it never sounded quite right. It wasn't until I really started to practice with a pick that I re-visited this song. I think it's pretty fun to play it this way and it sounds very genuine, which is what I was going for. Play it however it sounds good to you! :+)
Hola amigo Zumaz!!! muy bien de regreso con mas de DD, por faor "Runaway Runaway" from All you need is now, if possible, OK GREAT You're BACK THANKS!.
Thanks for doing this. I LOVE the synth, but as I got into Duran, I became a fan of Taylor's Bass. It's great to hear this awesome complement to the heavy sequencer & drums.
@GordDunker - I was actually drawn to Duran Duran because of the synth sounds as a boy. Then, the bass pulled me in and the rest is history. I still have great fondness for Nick's creations though.
Good to see you back Zuma. I've always enjoyed your videos, very informative and a great help with learning some classic bass lines. As a big John Taylor fan the Duran content is most interesting, and the SB1000 makes me horny! :-p Please do a 'review' of the SB1000 as I'm sure many people would love to see how much this beautiful bass can do. By the way, you would do John proud with how well you play Duran bass lines :-)
@Alvin691 - Good question! So many things really...mostly , though, I took a new position at work that required some serious learning. Computer geek by day, Super-musician by night!? Well, something like that. ;+)
@ibdnw - Look closely, there are two doggies. I know the lighting is bad (cloudy day) but you can see them both. Thanks for the welcome back everybody! I will be posting more often!!! Perhaps something from this same show will be next as mcorioles suggested. John Taylor rules!!!
ive actually been playing this song now with my fingers..i put alot of foam under my pick up so i have it raised really high and i can dig in on the pick up with out it making a racket..this sorta came from playing my fretless so much..i dunno if its cheating all i know is i hit the notes and ice got speed i didnt have before..aria is doing fine..sterling is doing great! I bought an ampeg and octave oc3 pedal for my fretless i think im finally realdy for some video wars lol.

John Taylor used a pick to record this song???? Are you completely sure???
I think was played without any pick and the ghost notes at the last part of the tune are the proof of it.

Any chance of getting the tab for this?

@steedstylin - Sorry, no tabs. Try and just play it like you hear it and then learn it over and over again! There is no true shortcut in my opinion.

For years I've told people that if they would just listen to only the bass on this song it would be good enough....all the other parts just a bonus.

This song would have sounded better had you played it without the pick :( This is one of my songs to warm up with.
