Have you guys ever put sea salt into your reverse osmosis water? That r/o water is really stripped down and has no minerals within it. You could mix in some good quality sea salt. HImalayan salt has some excellent minerals, ie good magnesium content, but would be difficult to get into solution, so go for some good quality sea salt.
You know what superfoods are? Superfoods are foods that are the most easiest to digest, assimilate and absorb. Foods that your body is designed for. Are you a fish? eat algea. Are you Human? eat fresh, ripe, raw Fruits and Vegetables. Nobody needs Powders.
raw chocolate.........not a superfood.. it's a raw treat ... i would say best saved for birthdays, weddings and special occasions... not an every day thing... as is not a super food but a stimulante... please correct me !!!!!!!!!!!
Please do not poke Annemarie in the eyes. She has really beautiful big eyes and they must be protected. :-) They are a treasure in the raw food community.
I like hemp a lot and I also really love dates, but I have to limit myself on how many dates I will buy because they are so addicting to me and I know that they're high in sugar. (If there were date trees growing in my yard I'd probably be in really big trouble.)
Because it is true. Nearly everything these guys eat has to be blended up or is packaged. There were no blenders 100 years ago and most of these "super foods" were not cultivated as such nor sold, and I doubt people were harvesting spirulina and chlorella algae from the surface of lakes and eating it because they thought it was a good source of protein. Maybe they were, someone somewhere finally ate it and decided to sell it to people. Not to mention, most of what these guys eat is imported.
It's just not practical. Take away modern amenities, and what is left? Just vegetables and to eat the amounts need for daily calorie requirements, one wouldn't have enough room in their stomach to break even calorie wise. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy their videos for creative ways to incorporate raw enzyme rich food into my diet, but I wouldn't subsist mainly on a diet like theirs, it would lead to malnourishment and bone degradation.
Well, what do you think your bones are made out of? Give me an example of a raw foodist who doesn't have to buy all these fancy luxury items to get their extra protein. What about the B vitamins, oh, they eat nutritional yeast right? Spirulina is not a sufficient protein, this sort of diet is extremely deficient in amino acids which can ONLY be obtained from meat. End of story, read THE vegetarian Myth if you are open minded enough about and able to defend your stance on this issue.
Extra protein? You don't need extra protein. Most leafy greens are complete protein sources. So are seeds like hemp and flax as well as goji berries.
All of them can grow in my garden here in Sweden.
Protein is certainly not an issue.
The raw food diet is not deficient in nutrients. It is true that commercial produce is lacking in minerals though so depending on what quality of produce you have you might need better sources of minerals. But that's true for any diet.
leafy greens do not supply an adequate amount of protein and most dark leafy greens should be cooked because they contain oxalic acid and goitrogens which inhibit your thyroid from functioning optimally. Oxalates lead to problems with kidney and gall stones. You don't have to believe me, I've done my research, you can live a raw food lifestyle and talk to me in 40 years and well see how healthy you are..
Also, you seem to think that the products they try in this show is for some reason needed to stay healthy on the raw food diet. That's just not the case. But many raw foodists strive for optimum health, and are not satisfied with just surviving, they want to thrive. And some of those products might help you get further on the quest for optimum health.
Some of them just make raw food more fun and exciting.
Actually, I read it a few weeks ago. And I did enjoy parts of it. I completely agree with many of her points about agriculture and complete lack of logic amongst many vegans.
I can also see where she's coming from. We have had a similar dietary journey in some ways.
I also failed the vegan diet once, and went in another direction for a few years, but eventually found a working approach to the vegan lifestyle.
Do you by "these guys" mean Kevin and Annmarie? From what I've heard Kevin say, they mostly eat "boring" stuff like salad and fermented veggies. So I doubt that most of what they eat are imported.
And the blending and processing is only about adding fun and variation to the food, something we got used to through modern cooking. It's certainly not something that is needed to eat this way.
I think you might have the wrong idea of what the raw food lifestyle is about.
No, they are always discussing all these products they buy to supplement their diet. Exotic imported and very expensive additions to a diet that touts simplicity and being "natural". You are right, they do eat a lot of these other foods, but tell me raw cacao is local, or agave nector, or coconut oil? If the raw diet included RAW MEAT we would be having another discussion altogether. Are you an advocate of this sort of diet if you don't mind me asking?
None of us are advocates for this diet, we have simply tried it, and have fallen in love with it because of the way it makes us feel, and the improvements we feel and see within our bodies. We do not need to eat meat, we can get plenty of protein from fruits vegetables nuts and seeds. It is such a huge myth about how much protein we actually require. Too much protein is harmful for our bodies, and actually causes disease within our bodies. As someone else already said, they do not need these
supplements they talk about, they are simply adding them to further heal their bodies from all the damage that has been done from SAD diets and such. Some raw foodists strive to improve their bodies in as many ways as they can. Im sure no other diet will magically heal everything in our bodies and make it perfect just by eating as simple as possible. They are using food as their medicine, and not all of it is readily available locally so they seek it from other places. Just as most do. Why would
they avoid these foods just because they are not found locally, when they provide such amazing healing and health benefits to our bodies? It is simple and natural. you are obviously very frustrated and stubborn, and cannot accept that everyone is unique and individual, and this is simply how they choose to eat and live. There is nothing with it. There are many healthy raw foodists that eat simply just raw fruits vegetables nuts and seeds. Are you going to avoid bananas if they dont grow locally?
Highly unlikely. Here in Canada, we can't grow many of the fruits and vegetables that we eat. Just because they do not grow here, are you going to avoid them even though they are highly nutritious. of course not. it is very hard in the society we have created today to live off of what is produced locally. We need a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. In regions such as tropical regions where there is an abundance and variety of fruits i'm sure it would be easier. We buy locally when we can.
Dude ,you guys are right near my house ! No blackberries yet but there are literal Tons of cherries, berries ,apples... popping .Nix the coffee and Get some free foraging in.
I say even something as mundane as iceberg lettuce picked fresh and live are potential 'superfoods' , variety is key too. In winter , indoor grown herbs , a variety of sprouted beans ,seeds , grains etc are a great source of local live 'superfoods' and well as lacto-fermented stuff ,seems to put my ibs to shame.=)
my new favorite superfood is maca root. it just made me feel really good. and of course i still love goji berries and cacao. oh, and hemp seeds for my superprotein.
Good talk on the Superfoods .... i like the idea that they aren't limited to the exotic only. I'd like to try Coconut Kefir and Yogurt sometime. I love watermelon juice!
Very good tip drinking distilled/R.O. water can be harsh on the cells since it is like "skeleton water" so the mineralization of the water is a very good idea.
My favorite "superfood" right now would have to be kalamata olives.
I totally agree Kevin, superfoods are a very long list of foods. I do however see a lot of people calling some less than spectacular foods superfoods sometimes. I guess that imaginary line where a food crosses over into a superfood is up for debate.
A complete diet should _also_ include mental/spiritual foods. I find that aspect lacking in most "raw food" approaches. The shamans know these foods can be true healers. Once people connect with their inner-selves and their vessel of cells, they can begin to treat it and others better. Many people only take these foods a few times a year - or even less - but it the re-connection job for a long time.
I agree with Kevin about what superfoods are or at least should be. It is however more of a marketing term so I mostly use it to describe the products marketed as superfoods.
Anyhow, my favorite one would probably be Romanesco broccoli. Because it's easier to eat raw than most other kinds of broccoli, and it's one of the most beautiful looking veggies ever.

The calories would come from fruits, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains.
There are plenty of raw foodist who only eat local food and get by just fine.
Though Kevin has suggested that some athletes could benefit from cooked grains for calories in addition to the raw food diet.
Why would malnourishment and bone degradation be and issue with a diet which main goal is optimal nutrition? What are your claims for that?
