  • E-ink is a cool tech demo, but after years of promises, all we still have are cheap black and white displays for ebook readers. As the video says, it's all coming in 2011... lol

  • @anupamvipul233 @realisticHomeboy and others: You can buy a similar device right now from ectaco.com. I wouldn't recommend it as a general eReader yet but it's definitely colour eInk, and it definitely works.

  • Since the actual technology is not being shown, it has not been made yet, and this video is rather pointless. What companies PLAN to have ready in some year, is never of much value.

  • @szb9c You're thinking subtractive color, as used with color pigments. The filters operate on light and do not overlap, so the way you get yellow is red and green at the same time.. and fuzzy enough eyesight (which they might accomplish using diffusers on top, at another loss of contrast). IIRC the Triton has doubled the linear resolution over prior displays, so it may be barely passable at 300dpi subpixels, roughly similar to 150dpi pixels.

  • @szb9c LCD TV Manufacturers have been doing it for years. CMYK is more of a marketing thing. I believe Sharp is the only company that choses to utilize that technology...

  • @szb9c Pixel size is really small so RED + GREEN will seem yellow to you same as normal LCD just that you have the light reflected and no back-light.

    All 16.7 million colors that our monitors show, come from 256 variations of red, green, and blue.

    the Kindle Touch is still using the black and white E Ink.

  • @iraqiusx You cant have Eink display with apps like angry birds it would just keep flashing. Eink needs time to organize the ink partials, this is why ereaders flash to black from time to time. Dynamic fast moving things still require the OLED or LCD.

    It'll probably only ever be used for reading. It's refresh rate is too low for most anything else.

  • I thought the bigger advantage of e-ink technology is the 'foldability' of the display. but it seems that all the products come with the large, rigid , tablet-style frames.

  • The top 3 ePaper display (EPD) technologies right now are Qualcom's Mirasol, Samsung's Liquavista, & E-Ink's Triton displays. The other technology gaining popularity out there is the Pixel Qi display which is a hybrid EPD and LCD now being used in netbook screens and Notion Ink's Adam tablet. Hanvon is already using Triton. Amazon is rumored to come out with an Android tablet with a Mirasol display. Samsung is coming out with their own e-reader using Liquavista or license them to Sony or B&N

  • Mirasol isn't a competitor as there are no Mirasol based products available (supposed to have shipped Q42009).

  • @dak2009 Same is true for color e-ink. No products have been shipped so far.

  • Colour done this way is better than nothing but it doesn't hold a candle to printed magazine content let alone competitors like Mirasol, OLED or a regular LCD. E Ink's major advantage is power consumpion but it looks so grey. If the background were brilliant white it would look a lot more attractive. I also fear the colour will use some freaky pixel geometry + dithering + existing 16 shade contrast to simulate 4096 colours but it will look more like tinting than true colour.

  • Bet the next kindle generation is going to have Triton ink, and probably touch screen too... But don't think they'll release it until 2012, maybe December 2011 so they can hit xmas sales :P

  • I really don't understand why Kindle or nook hasn't updated their systems with color eink technology yet.

  • @JPoirot127 It would be nice that the next iteration of the Nook, the Reader, or the Kindle to be in color. I think the reason why B&N, Sony and Amazon have not done so is because of cost and quality. Color e-ink do not have the same clarity as their B&W counterpart when it comes to displaying text. And because this is being used as an e-reader more than anything else, they want the text quality to be on par. Secondly, they prefer faster refresh rates for video & animation to match LCD speed.

    CMYK is apropriate when you have _substractive_ color model, here model is additive.

  • Why RGB instead of CMYK? Since this is using pigments instead of backlight, shouldn't it use CMYK?

  • Dang, I didn't realize color eInk was a shipping product...I hope that means we'll get a Kindle that has graphic novels available...might work on the 10" model...

  • they need to develop e-ink that emits light for use in the dark (which can be turn on and off of course) though this is still great.

  • @Bobertoq I think that's a clear filter for black and white.

  • @Bobertoq Because white isn't a colour, but the sum of all colours. Thus, a "white" filter makes as much sense as asking what's north to the north pole. There are additive and subtractive colours, namely RGB (Red, Green, Blue) and CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key), with which you make up all the colours.

  • @federicopistono I know the difference between additive and subtractive colors. It's just that every screen I've ever seen only has red, blue, and green filters. At 1:11 in the video there is an additional filter and it looks like it's clear or white. I am curious what the purpose of it is.

  • Bobertoq, it's fun to watch federicopistono pretend to school you on the supposed nonsense of a white "filter", while in the video the very name given for what you're questioning is "RGBW filter". hmm, i wonder what the W stands for.

  • @r8qt7 Both black and white are considered shades. They are used to increase or decrease the values of other colors, and are not classified as colors themselves.

    For example, if you combine Red and Blue you get purple or magenta, but if you mix Red and Black, you get a darker red. Red and white would lead to a lighter red, or pink, though is merely a shade of Red with a name applied.

  • @TrickyEmu no, you cannot only see it in the sun. It's designed to be read like paper, instead of an LCD screen which hurts your eyes after reading for too long. So you do need light to read, be it the sun or a reading light doesn't really matter
