i play real guitar but i learned to play drums on guitar hero to and then i started playing on a real drum kit and guitar hero really helped out a lot, i highly recommend it to people who want to learn drums

the sounds you hear are probably the preset sounds from the roland and yes they are crappy. But if you would record the midi the drum into the pc and patch it through a drum vst , you can make it sound like anything you want.

They are real drums. He said they were Roland so I assume they're the V-drums which for all intents and purposes are the same as playing an actual drum kit. By practicing on the V-Drums you can easily switch to a real kit and retain the skills you've acquired.
