This series was a really great visual tutorial. Trying to absorb and translate the rules without being able to sit in on a game first seemed almost impossible; I'm glad I checked here first. Thanks for the time and effort, and even answering the questions in the comments!
Thank you so much! My boyfriend and I just got this game in the mail and have been trying diligently to figure this damn thing out all morning! Your video is the only thing keeping us from arguing! And it is by far the best one on youtube!
i bought this game coz i'm a lovecraft fan. don't know how to play it though. there should be a tutorial video where atleast two to three players are playing.
@deejay24ion There's no functional difference between a solo game controlling 3 characters (which is what I'm demonstrating) and a 3 player game. Everything works exactly the same.
Great game. Today i played for first time and it's awesome. But I saw like 8 expansions in the shop. Can they be played all together like one monstrous game?
@t3hWoLFsvk Yes, they can. I've only done it twice, but it definitely works. My preference is 1-2 expansions at a time, though there are some things from all expansions that I keep in the game at all times (encounter cards, investigators, items, etc.).
I tried to play this for the first time yesterday. With two of us it took 2 hours to do one full turn trying to make sense of the rules. We eventually had to give up (because there was booze) but man thank you so much for making this video series.
@Sargeantslug Many different discussions and opinions about that... For a small box, I'd probably suggest the new revised Curse of the Dark Pharaoh (the original was a favorite of mine, though many consider it flawed, thus the revision). For adding difficulty with a small box, I'd suggest the Black Goat expansion. For big box, my favorite is Innsmouth, but Innsmouth and Dunwich are both worth having and definitely better than Kingsport, so you can't go wrong with either of those.
Sorry, I have another question, what turn do you close a gate? (I know you move from the 2nd area of other world back to arkham, do you close it during the movement phase?) Also: if an Other World encounter were to bring you to arkham, you get an "explored" token. Can you close it as soon as you enter arkham? or do you have to wait til the movement phase. Thanks again.
@TheLostPagong Here's the process, from what I've come to understand. You enter the gate, go to the Other World, draw your encounter. Move to the second half the next turn, draw your Encounter. Exit the gate the next turn, ignore any monsters on the gate, and draw an Encounter for that location. The turn after you exit the Gate, provided you're still on the Gate and haven't been knocked off via another monster or some action from the last turn's encounter, then you close the Gate.
@TuxKamen This part is incorrect: "Exit the gate the next turn, ignore any monsters on the gate, and draw an Encounter for that location." You don't draw an encounter the turn you exit the gate. That turn, you immediately try to close/seal the gate. (Turn 1) Move onto gate. Draw Gate encounter. (Turn 2) Move to 2nd part of Other World. Draw Gate encounter. (Turn 3) Move back to Arkham. Close/seal gate. (Mind you, circumstances may change how that happens if you're delayed, etc.)
@Grudunza Thanks for the correction there, I must've misread the rules in the book. When I read "Gives the Investigator the chance to roll to seal the gate on the next Arkham Encounters phase", I took that to mean the next turn after they exit, for some reason (probably because of all the talk of "As long as they don't leave the location", since there are cards that kick you out of places), missing the fact you get one right after exitting
@TheLostPagong You would have to either evade or fight that monster during the Movement Phase of the next turn. Mandy's ability specifically states that it applies for a "skill check", which checking for a Blessing is not.
Im pretty sure this game will cost me a lot of money. As seen in your vid, too many things. Are those tokens or whatever you called them are included in the package or they can be sold seperately?
@rhayvie17 Everything you see in the video (except for the business card holders where the cards are stacked) is included in the base game box. And you can get AH for as low as $40 online, which is really low these days for a board game, considering all that you get in the box. What will cost you a lot of money is if you start buying the several expansions, and the minis, and the special dice, and the who knows what else will come out... Yup, THAT is what gets expensive. :o)
@evolutionn92 I would say absolutely yes, but only if you like playing games solo. AH is a really great solo game, you just have to control 3-4 characters yourself (or less or more, but that seems to be the ideal number).
If 1 player goes into a gate and then the next movement another one goes in the same gate. What happens when the 1st player that went in the gate closes it? Is the other player lost in time?. I think i just answered myself and feel too lazy to go and read the manual. Sorry!!!
@CRAZY6256 The second player is Lost in Time and Space, but not until they move out of the gate. Sometimes you might get lucky and another gate for that world will open in the meantime.
If I come back from other worlds can I close gate right away or I need to wait till next turn? I don't understand about movements with gates and other worlds. For example if I end turn on the gate I'm automatically should stand on the other world or I need to wait till next turn? Could you please explain how meny turns do I need to do from ending movement on the gate and closing it. And by the way I have watch all your videos they are really helpful, thank you very much! :-)
@TheProfas A) You enter a gate during Movement. B) During Arkham Encounters you move your piece to the corresponding Other World. C) During Other World Encounters you have an encounter. D) Next turn, for Movement, you move to the second half of the Other World. E) During Other World Encounters you have an encounter. F) Next turn, during Movement, you move back to Arkham. G) During Arkham Encounters, you attempt to close the gate. If you fail, you can stay there and try again next turn.
@TheProfas Yes, indeed. Assuming you have 5 Clue tokens to spend. You always "close" the gate in that situation... whether you seal it as well depends on whether you have the Clues to do so (or an Elder Sign) or whether you want to do so.
@Grudunza actually i thot the lighting was good. was just puerly academic curios P.s. just a note, the comment box benith the video wasnt visible at time 4 sum reason. when i view. likely a technical problem my end. but still great video. tho... ill recommend to anyone i know whod be intrested.
THANK you so much for your Arkham Horror tutorial. I found it so incredibly useful, as a newbie learning the game (or to brush uo on when I haven`t played for a while) that I have committed the whole thing to disc so I can play in on my DVD player.
I wish you had more of these FFG tutorials for AH expansions for other games; they`re the best out there. Interesting, informative, and you don`t nerd about... excellent stuff. I`m really grateful.
A great tip, if you go to walmart in the fishing section.. theres a ton of really cheap clear plastic tackle boxes. These are PERFECT for holding every single token.
I've been trying to find info on the dimensions of the gameboard, just to see if everything'd fit my kitchen-table. Could somebody provide them? Haven't found them anywhere! :)
@PeteyCarcass I'm not sure the dimensions of the board... I'll try to remember to measure it next time I have it out. But you can also use a custom half-sized board (search for it at Boardgamegeek). I had that printed out on at Staples and attached it to a cheap thrift store game board with spray adhesive. Works great!
Hi there, first of all I want to thank you for giving us (beginners) the step-by-step procedure into playing this awesome but difficult game. Even if its a bit long at least you've shown us the basics of the game and the cards by which some of them are so hard to figure out. Once again thanks.
@givethem22 That describes a special effect that applies to certain monsters (e.g. Cultists have their toughness increased by 2), and applies throughout the game.
Just wanted to thank you for the whole (1-9) tutorial. I just picked up the game and watching these a few times made the game much MUCH easier to play the first time.
I've been waiting for someone to do a video like this for some time. I've already caught a couple of things I've been doing wrong. Thanks for doing them!

Thanks again for the tutorial. I have a question, it's probably in one of the tutorials, but I probably missed it.
If a monster moves to your location via Mythos. When do you fight it? Do you fight / dodge it during movement phase?
And also, can you use Mandy's reroll ability for Blessing Check? (this was an issue in our group)

Board game companies should always include a video (tutorial + gameplay) just like you did.

Ps the lighting and video quality was just fine.
