A documentary about the normal people playing would be mundane and uninteresting. The film is interesting because it celebrates the rarely seen and unusual players of the game. That's why people want to see it.
I dont get the big deal...its not like it was made for DnD players to look bad. Infact it came off that as long as people were happy with what they did then why should you care.
Not sure why every D&D player feels the need to defend the game to the point they can't enjoy a film that celebrates the weirder side of things... even if a lot of that effect is due to editing. ^_^ Relax... enjoy the movie... if you're "cooler" than these people, that's fine. If you're just as weird that's even better. Screw normalcy. Will be checking this out for sure.
Just once, I'd love to see a documentary about something like this, except with normal people being interviewed too. This just reinforces the stereotype that the only people who play games like DnD are people who are socially inept and awkward.
@GregariousBlueMitten I didn't say sex was bad, it can be a profound experience. But in the end it's still just sex. Roleplaying is a pastime that challenges your intelligence and imagination and, unlike sex, that's a rare thing these days. I can see that you don't understand how that can be stimulating and I am truly sorry for that but insulting me or this amazing game only makes you look childish. Ad hominem attacks are for simple people who can't make a compelling argument.
I really liked this film. It is not really about role playing, but about the lives of 3 pretty regular people. Yes, they are weird, kind of freaks. But that is actually quite normal. The average person is not an average person, if you know what I mean. If you want a film about role playing you'll be disappointed. If you want a film about "interesting" people, you'll love it.
This was a good documentary I thought. It was less about DM's and D&D than it was a simple character drama about people I would never usually care enough to hear their story. Each was a loser of one type or another. They were different enough from "typical" trash to be interesting. But none were self aware enough to rise above it. At one point a couple of grown men playing dress up like fantastic movie heroes had a real life jealous fit over a woman who looked like McDonald's Grimace.
I'm a DM and player, I don't dress up and LARP or anything like that. I have different sets of dice for different occasions, and all my dice are parts of matching sets. These guys are playing old school ADND, not the moderen 3.5 or 4.0, although we all know 4.0 sucks. But seriously, I live a normal life. Just once a week, I go into my friends basement and we battle our dwarves and elves against gnolls and bugbears.
These may be hardcore geeks but playing D&D with a good dungeon master is more fun than watching any movie, more fun than playing any sport, more fun than any computer game ever made (RPG or otherwise), there's even something to be said on whether or not it's more fun than sex. I feel sorry for the people who never experience the joy of good roleplaying just because they think it's too geeky and pathetic. You might call these guys losers, but they're having more fun than you'll ever know.
@Hanatash sorry dude, I've been DMing for over a dozen years, and that makes for over half of the time I've spent on earth, and I can assure you that all of my players and I agree unanimously that sex is way better than even the most epic of epic D&D games. D&D is cool, but not orgasmic. Get out of your house.
@Matthisyahu sex is overrated, you must not get much of it if you value it this highly. You might not orgasm all over the playtable from a good RP session (hopefully) but that hardly makes it any less fun, there were in fact a few times (albeit not many) when I turned down a date on a friday night because we had a session planned. But you're young, priorities change over the years, you'll see as you grow older.
@Hanatash You are lame and pathetic. Turning down a REAL date, with a REAL person, to play a stupid, fake, fantasy game? If your priorities have changed in that direction with age, I truly and honestly pity you along with those girls whom you've turned down over the years.
Also, sex is overrated? If you think that, you must not be very good at it :)
@Trund27 Why would you respond to a comment that is possibly over a year old? Besides I'm pretty sure if your wasting your time playing this stupid game in a costume your not. A. Not exploring the Universe. B. Not studying Wildlife. C. Finding cures for diseases. D. Or what ever the fuck 'Wage peace' means. Thank you and good night.
Anyone who wants to know the real person behind the elf costume and not the out of context bleh thats represented here. Go to (games info depot) --> click blog at the top --> scroll down to interviews. I'd post a link, but you tube doesn't allow such things.
they took the same story plot of a group of ppl playing a game then have the real world mess it all up and that my friends is "the guild" right there only less intresting
My brother and my friends all played D&D avidly. I'm a lawyer, my bro is a patent atty. with a PhD in biochemistry, my friends are: an eye surgeon, an officer in the Army, a physics teacher and a computer programmer. I hazard to guess that those of us who played RPG's turned out out to be more successful than the guys on the varsity football team.
@LawyerScumGhost I'm not tryin to burst your bubble, nor am I trying to defend the "varsity football team", but success is in the eyes of the beholder. Your idea of success is different from theirs and vise versa. Having a high status, high paying career such as a physician, doesn't mean shit if you're not happy. Just my $0.02, sorry for the ear beating.
I could just as easily say people on varsity football became major-league and make more money in a year to play a mindless sport than you ever would working your ass off. lol
@GillesGerais I happen to know one of the DMs featured in this film. The director put a horrible spin on things and edited conversations so as to make them look "hopeless". They are not that weird in real life.
@GillesGerais but if they showed just regular, normal people the film wouldn't be as interesting. I'd rather watch the weirdos for entertainment value. They're great.
@GillesGerais You don't get it. If people want to see normal people playing D&D, they'd go to the store and get D&D themselves. This film is about showing the people HARDCORE into D&D, because that's what the people wanna see, that's what I wanna see, and that's also what you want to see. Come on, it's not like you should be ashamed about it, in this age where videogames outsell movies.
@GillesGerais I'm sorry, but if you are willing to put down these people as "DnD nerds" you better be ready to regard yourself in just as negative a light when the average person calls you a "DnD nerd" just because you DM. People are all different. No life style is better than another. Get over yourself.
It drives me fucking crazy when nerds talk down at each other.
@GillesGerais That's pretty harsh. Who are you to criticize how they like to play, they aren't hurting anybody. What makes them freaks that they are different, I think that makes you a freak for being 'normal'
@lovelylorna Agreed... My game group is made up of professional artists, writers, musicians, photographers, etc. We're a well-balanced group of 25+ year old gamers (I'm 40, btw) and we have a fantastic time together. BTW, we're playing 4E and about half our group had never gamed before we started this campaign (though I've been playing RPGs since '78 or so). Miracles do happen!!!
Check out Dead Gentlemen's The Gamers, or better yet, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. The characters are a little closer to what I feel the average D&D player experiences.
