Goldust was always so underrated. Hell of a wrestler and very entertaining outside the ring as well. It's too bad he was never given a serious chance because he really did deserve to be at the top and win the WWE Championship even if it was for one night. At the age of 42 it's a given he'll just go back to helping the younger talent which of course is fine.

@sTyLnK I don't personally think he was underrated, maybe by fans but not by his achievements. He is a multi time Intercontinental Champion and is still an active part of the wwe today despite the fact he has been in the two most popular promotions for over two decades.

I would say he is a great Intercontinental champion but is only considered a world title contender because of the lack of experience winning the title in recent years. Personally I think as Goldust he could have never been WC.

Obviously when it comes to the WWE it's all about marketing so that's why guys like Cena continue to win. I think the credibility of the IC title needs to come back, some of the best wrestlers in the world such as Piper never won the WC but will always be more respected and remembered than so many that have done.

Proof positive that in pro wrestling the tried and true works. Here is Val Venis who the WWF had pushed as a semi-babyface for a year and Goldust (Dustin) was being made out to be the heel. Yet, the fans saw that Val took Dustin's wife and sympathized with him. Thus the reaction he gets as Goldust (obviously back to beat the Hell out of Val for what he'd done) was 100% pure good vs evil kind of stuff (the same stuff that Vince swore was outdated in 1998.)

@Spimon Yeah, up until this moment Val Venis had been pushed as a babyface while Dustin was given a religious gimmick designed to poke fun at televangelists (I think) and he was getting booed as a party pooper. That's actually what started their feud. As Dustin objected to Val's lifestyle and began to interfere in his matches. So that led up to all this. It was a REALLY weird chain of events.

@CombatSportFan Vince McMahon always goes to extremes. Why can't he find a middle ground for everything? If it's not PG, then it's gotta be close to Rated R and vice versa. Good vs. Evil will never be outdated. Fans will always cheer for the good guy or the underdog at least. Stone Cold became popular because fans were tired of babyfaces pandering to the crowd for cheap pops. In the end, Austin was good and McMahon was evil. Fans just wanted an edgier hero to cheer for.

You can start guys off as anti-heroes and have them edgy, but eventually they have to become full fledged babyfaces or the fans will tire of them. He pointed out the Rock's act as a smart ass jock in 1999 would only carry him so far before the fans would start turning on him since he was coming across as more of a bully. Then he admitted Foley was his friend and the Rock came full circle.

@CombatSportFan True, I noticed how every cocky heel makes that slow transition into a foul-mouthed anti-hero and then tones it down after a while and starts to acknowledge the fans. The Rock and Stone Cold are pretty humble in their promos now but they still retain that asshole in them. I think for an edgy face to work, the heel has to step up his game be a bigger jackass like Vince McMahon was to Austin.

Since the Attitude era it seems like every wrestler is afraid to be booed so they do the catch phrases, and the high spots, and all of that stuff that draws pops from the crowd. A heel should never do anything that the fans can get behind or chant along with. No high spots that will make them pop. And they should cheat like mad. Guys just don't do that now.

@CombatSportFan I think it is in today's PG era where wrestlers fear the boos coz in the Attitude Era and during the early years of Brand Extension, heels would use disgusting tactics to get heat. Sometimes they would go unecessarily far like the whole Katie Vick debacle. These days, I think the whole heel definition has been corrupted. Everyone has the wrong idea thinking that a heel is a cool character that talks lotsa smack. The entire concept has been lost among today's performers.

Even if the crowd popped when they came out and started off giving them a babyface reaction, but the end of the match they'd be ready to murder them because they knew how to cheat and heel it up that effectively. Heck, guys need to watch tons of stuff from that era to remember how to do lots of things in wrestling effectively.
