I love the satanism hidingand mixed with holy into the Metropolis. The best movie ever made, Lang was the first using amazing camera angles, he broke the rules, and that's why he is an immortal genious.
@rakrois I'm not trying to insult Metropolis, but there were others before who were innovative with the camera. Notably, The Last Laugh from 1924 and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920. The Last Laugh also broke the rule of title cards in a silent film. That's right, it's all told through the visuals.
@IlersichProductions, only Metropolis survived lonhg enough in cinema history to be remember. Sadly most of the great films of that period were lost or destroyed. The other films you mentioned were amazing too in their own way, but we only have now copies or bad original material, the main reason why it is so hard to reonstruct or rereleased so many of the early great movies of the history of cinema.
Of course this was considered erotic in the 1920's. That woman doesn't have a top on and that skirt leaves only little to imagination... And with all that weird shaking she really shows her legs, now doesn't she? Though our generation of people is used to half-naked women in the media, I could imagine this was almost considered pornographic back then.
@isolovemybeau unfortunatley most people overlook stuff like that. To most fans she was dressed weird and did a dance. Unless you know about metropolis, most fail to see the connection, but history repeats itself and old movies, books, ect make their way into pop culture periodically.
No this was not risque dancing in the 1910's and 20's. Back then girls were dancing naked on tabletops, making out with each other, and etc at parties and such. Oh, they were absolutely WILD back then. More wild than we dare to be now but somehow with 1000x times more class :(. They had respect for what it meant to be a woman back then even if they were "wild" women. Girls today are simply disgusting. So few could pull off a Josephine Baker or Mae West today.
@abbracci A little thing called perspective helps. 1920s had a lot of wild times, probably wilder than we're used to. Androgyny was in and women were being "scandalous" in comparison to what was normal just ten years before. She's showing off her body, her body is almost nude, and that is titillating to the men she is bewitching. try learning a bit of history and get a little perspective.
Well it was pretty hardcore for back then, as far as I know - and she is pretty hot...strangely enough, as long as I've been on the internet and after all I've saw, I found it mildly arousing as well.
I also believe there may be some similar clips of Alla Nazimova that survived as well.
