I just couldn't stop listening, although I've heard the piece played hundreds of times.
I'm sure von Sauer had the magical performance of Liszt himself in mind when he recorded it.

Interestingly, co-Liszt-pupil, Friedheim plays the dotted-rhythm melody idea with almost exactly the same rhythmic hesitation before the downbeat as Sauer does. I have posted his performance here too.
