  • There is no better jazz pianist than Art Tatum. What creativity! To hear him play is a lesson in listening. Rhythmically, harmonically and technically brilliant.

  • yeah he's aiight

  • The one person who disliked this.. wait there are none! amazing song.

  • One of the wonders of the world. And that's not just the music world

  • To Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, I'm am proud to know that you two exceptionally Talented Black Men showcased your talent and inspired so many of us, such as myself to get back into playing the piano. It is truly inspiring to know that as Black People, we created such beautiful music. From your Son of Kush

  • Holy sweet potatoes!

  • Awesome! TY eccentricxxx for posting

  • A staggering gift to move and entertain! Great depth of soul and grace!

Thank you for posting and to paulostroff99 for sharing this gem!

  • I wish I was born in the 30's in NYC... I'd be on 52nd street stalking Mr. Tatum every night :)

  • I THINK HIS HARMONY IS AS GREAT AS HIS SPEED A HEAD OF HIS TIME. HIM AND OSCAR AND STEVE RICHKO....... COULD STOP TIME

  • soooo good, great sound quality too!

  • Art Tatum is one of the main reasons Jazz music will be remembered as America's greatest contribution to world culture. His playing was and is emotional, breathtaking and beautiful...

  • This was my Mom and Dads' favorite love song!! My Dad was a pianist and when he wasn't playing he was listening to his Hi-Fidelity recordings and Art was a great favorite in our home. Brings back lovely memories!!!!!

  • 2:57 Ohhhh!!!! Just perfect!!!

  • My God!

  • Speachless when listening those fast fingers playing....

  • He was actually the fater of bebop, most consider parker monk and bud powell, however his harmonic experiments and innovations were ahead of time.In many history jazz books he is considered the father of modernists in jazz piano. And i agree with this. These 2 cd sets recorded on the home of a friend of his was one of the cd sets i have been listening for years. It's the perfect marriage of jazz piano and classical too.We love Art Tatum.Thank you for this post!

  • Most of the piano players today is almost one handed . Before the cats was real two handed piano players ,but this cat is four handed. Bird use to wash dishes in a club where Art Tatum was playing, so he can listen to him every night.

  • Would some of you wonderful people be so kind as to recommend some jazz pianists to me? I really like solo more than with a band if that helps!

  • @MetaTheorist Oscar Peterson, Mccoy Tyner, Bil Evans, Avishai Cohen (one of my favorites, but more often plays with a band), Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarret, but there are so many, you'll have to discover the rest by yourself :)

  • @MetaTheorist MrRemiCorimer made some wonderful suggestions. You might also try Erroll Garner, buddy.

  • @TheGoldDragon79 -And Errol Garner's album concert by the sea. Awesome by any standard.

  • It's wonderful how Jazz allows the genius in the performer to ooozze out of his fingers....very few forms of music compel the artist to express himself or herself so beautifully; change keys, tempos styles etc. I hope we never loose this most important form of expression, or we'll all be stuck rehashing just another shredding guitar solo in a redundant 4/4 on a three chord riff.

  • thank you

  • The density of his musical structure is a miracle to me. Even the most performant classical pianist couldn't render that today, for sure!

  • Man, Tatum takes you on a ride. Buckle up!

  • F*ck me... What can you say?

Thank God there was recording equipment.

  • flawless and impeccable!!

  • Listening to him & Oscar shows how bad my playng stinks (on dry ice)!

  • wonderful.

  • I think Tatum is a universe more sophisticated both musically and technically than Petersen, or just about anyone else, regardless of instrument. Petersen, the most musically technical modern jazz piano player, is a universe more sophisticated than just about any other jazz pianist. Both are brilliant, but Tatum is almost impossible to even compare anyone to. The same cannot be said as easily about Petersen.

  • @MarquisEstelle the only person icould compare but still is in second place isNHOP and if you can believe this he plays the upright bass. so thts it , 1 and 2 and everyboby else is a distant third.

  • whee haw! choice! churrrr! thiaaanks! i just love him hard!

  • So amazing... not of this world... Heaven in a lucky place!

  • Every modern pianist today learned from Art Tatum the concept of using rhythm, melody and harmony, the three basic components of jazz music. We will never see the likes of him again. Oscar Petersen got it right when he said that, Bud Powell was influenced greatly by the Tatum style in all his improvations.

  • Wow, I can't even think when I hear this stuff. All I feel is joy.

  • Oscar Petersons version sounds better

  • @860125mwj your crazy

  • Esta cancion me trae tantos recuerdos de mi infancia, y tocada por el grande Art Tatum es genial!

Thanks sooo much for posting this!

  • When you listen to this piece, it's very easy to see where the late, great, Oscar Peterson got his inspiration from. O.P. claims that he's "never imitated Art Tatum" but, mmmmmm.........I'm not so sure! What I am sure of, is the absolutely brilliant ability of both players. However, in my humble opinion, O.P. was the better of the two. Most of the time, Art Tatum played faster than you could listen and, to me, that's like sitting down to a fine meal in a top restaurant and golloping it down!

  • @Akinon33

    it´s not imitating.

imitating is what marian petrescu does (hes a beast)

what oscar did is playing the way he likes, and its normal that it sounds like tatum, when you listen to tatum

  • @Andreeeiiii

I disagree with you and, following your logic, it can also be assumed that the playing of Marian Petrescu is 'normal' and just happens (by coincidence) to sound similar to that of O.P.

No, I stand by my origional comment and add that I enjoy listening to all these wonderfully talented, musical giants.

  • @Akinon33 the best way to settle the question would be to ask OP. he has said no way, art was is and always wil be the best untill some one takes out. and everybody will obviously know when that happens, always ask the great players who is the best

  • I love Art Tatum. I got goosebumps within the first ten seconds of his playing. Sheer Genius!

  • Nothing but ear candy !

  • hm...you may resist at first but soon you can be 'pushed' in the roller coaster of notes he plays and be in for a ride=)

  • I just get lost in the sound of Tatum...

  • Stevie Wonder go home!!

  • 2 different musician

and what has blindness to do, when you compare musicians?

  • I'm just saying that he suck compared to this guy...

  • yes, but the fact is, that stevie makes good music!

not on an high level like jazz maybe, but good music!

  • wow...

    great version

    LOVE THIS!

    thanks!

  • nunca lo habia escuchado,,suena re bien, que como se disfruta esta musica!!!voy a difundirlo, nunca està de mas.

  • Bwoy!! a so it go. Somthing wrong wid dis bredda yah man. Him juss wicked.

  • It looks like someone needs a dictionary.

  • I am Jamaican. Therefore, i was praising him in my dialect, almost all Jamaican pianists love Art's music. He's the greatest!!!!!

  • He's the greatest!

  • wonderful,geniusly,awesome,virtuosity....

  • @remijazz

dude, you can't just make up words.

  • Art Tatum is one of the greatest pianist ever. Listen to how he just switches from style to different style and how it all just flows together, it sounds as if it's more than one person playing, but it's just him!

  • and he was blind. that changes things. a lot.

  • Eargasim!!!!WOW!!!LOL YOU RIGHT

  • remember folks this music is coming straight from this guys head no prepaired notes written down, this is his head plugged into a keyboard via his fingers

  • Actually. These are solos. Not improvised solos. They are actual arrangements that differed each time played, never eally the same but the chord changes and runs were usually the same.

  • This is only bearable because I know it is impossible!

  • This incredible pianist is beyond belief... pure "Eargasims" Wonderful contribution thanks.
