I'm a female with a buzzcut and my opportunities are very limited due to my unusual hair length. I doubt that the company that interviewed you would have hired me either. I could say that's sexist but I can also see why they do it. Employers know that 95% of customers wont care about tattoos or unusual hair but the reality is that another 5% will because they're dips. After a decade of being almost bald, I'm growing my hair long because I know that being a adult means compromise and change.
It's absolutely disgraceful that men are discriminated against like this. I know so many guys who've had to cut their hair to improve their chances of getting work, regardless of their skill sets or capabilities as an individual. What difference does it make? Hypothetically this isn't allowed in the UK, but it still happens.
If the company's non-discrimination policy covers gender expression, which would protect this. Also, there is no federal law protecting LGBT people from job discrimination in the private sector.
good for you man. I wont shave my beard for a job! If I was an arab and my beliefs said i had to have a beard they could hire me bur since I am not they wont. It is total bs.
For those saying this isn't the same as being discriminating against for color or sexual orientation...actually, yes it is. It really REALLY is. Those that are saying that seem to not be looking at the big picture. The fact is, women can grow their hair out with no problems, men can't. The situation in the case is the length of the hair, however, the main fact is that, if men were to switch their gender while growing their hair, it would no longer be a problem. We did not CHOOSE to be male.

@EdgarBoffin I would think that someone would call letting them have hair long as reducing masculinity. But I dont think its about being turned less "manly". Im not for this "manly" shit anyways.
I would have hired you! Yes you could have put it in a bun and a hat over it. I can not believe of hair. Wow! I hope you did cut your long hair. This is ridiculious. I like your long hair :)
@musikaxtrema That makes me wonder about the reason. My theory is one of the "looks" or images guys with long hair are associated with .. botched the explanation earlier calling it metal ... too specific... but idk how likely it is that im right cos idk what the job even is. Silly rule though. They'd get more business. Look at him.
Thank you! I feel the exact same way. If a woman is required to have her hair pulled back in a professional way, then why can't a man do the same? There's no reason why a guy shouldn't be allowed to have his hair long.

If a job didn't let women have short hair or be bald they would be mad. And the policy would have to be changed. But for some reason it's okay to said that men can't have long hair. Stupid!
O my fucking god duude! Your my idol!!! I had the same fucking problem with gay ass fred myer they told me if I cut my hair I could have the job! But yet they hire ppl with guaged ears and tattoos all over their body and pericings on their face and you cant have long hair!!! What the fuck this world is soo retarded!!! I cut my hair 3 years ago cuz ppl told me I would get a job did I no So I grew it back I say fuck what ppl say!!!
I hear you man. If an employer tells me that I cannot get hired unless I cut my hair, which is 2 inches below my shoulders, I will refuse him without hesitation. I will not loose my dignity by cutting my hair. Hair is a NATURAL part of human growth. NO ONE has the right to take that away. Just because a man has long hair, does not mean that he is not capable of having a good work ethic.
@HolyVegeta exactly man! Mines to my shoulders also and If you pull it back it's no different then having no hair I dont expect to wear it down I wouldnt wear it down if I got a job any where I would pull it back its just bull how they judge you by your hair! They dont even give you a chance to show them your a hard ass worker like you said Im glad theres alot of ppl out there like me!
i have long hair almost to my waist, and that keeps me from some jobs, i wanna kick people who wont hire cause of long hair, its stupid, most guys with long hair are more friendly that short haired pricks who try to look real nice
I am glad that you refused to cut your hair. You don't deserve to degrade yourself and remove a part of your NATURAL appearance just for the sake of getting hired. I tried to apply as a fireman for the city. I do a lot of leg strength exercises, since you need a lot of leg strength to be a fireman. I meet all of the physical qualifications of being a fireman. Yet, the Fire Chief rejected me because my hair was a 'bad representation' for the city. He did gave me a choice to cut it, but I refused.
If someone were to get a room at one of their hotels that had long, and were a man, they wouldn't turn them away because they are getting money!!! They shouldn't hire women with short hair cause they look like a man! How insane is this world to be bent over hair? I love men with long hair and I was told that deep down I must want to be with a woman! How INSANE !!!
I was hired over the phone , but they told me to come in person to sign some stuff first. Told me the same thing as you , and added the remark that I should go work at a record store.
Aw, I'm sorry you had to put up with their bullshit. My husband has been growing his hair out and it is now shoulder length. In a few years it will be long like yours! :)
It's natural for all people to have long hair. Female or male. The hair on our heads was made to grow. Your case isn't unusual and it really makes me angry. We are in the 21. century, we're supposed to have freedom, right? I totally hear you on this one.
digging this video i have been turned down as well cause of my long hair to i once waited for 6 hours at a a vons market to get interviewed and the first thing the lady said when i sat down was i cant hire u unless u cut your hair :( 6 hours!!!!!! hair is natrual. If men werent meant to have long hair and only women would then it wouldnt grown on men at all
Damn feel sorry for you. I'm in the process of growing my hair out and I'm lovin it :) 1.5 years since I started and 3 unfortunate haircuts which kept me in the akward phase before I learnt my lesson. Now my hair is past the akward stage and almost shoulder lenght U have amazing hair so keep it
these behaviors show how 'back ' we are even if we think we are progressive ,many things have changed regarding stereotypes rapidly the last 60 years but there are more that need to be changed!!!!!!!!
yes true!!!!! suddently these are the stereotypes ,"serious " men are supposed to have short hair ,this is very annoying and gets me angry or else they don't hire you... in school ,even in college long hair is not accepted in men... i remember they banned me from class many times when i was going to school for that ,it's a personal right i believe to have the appearance you want to have .....
Dude, I woulda looked that bastard in the eyes, and told him the same thing I tell anyone who I donèt like, but cant do a whole lot about : Fuck you..
I hear ya bro. I've been looking for a job for a little over 2 years now because me and my mom are broke. (I'm 16)
I had a job at a Tim Hortons but quit, this was when I started growing my hair out. Now its to my shoulders. And in the Fall I had an interview at a McDonalds. I was excited to think I would have had a job, but they told me that I had to cut my hair to work there. And they call it the "Picture Perfect Policy" I'm insulted even to this day. It's a hard life. - Love the hair!
That's silly ... because it isn't the interviewer's fault and they aren't going to risk their job to hire him anyways. I'd be extremely annoyed/angered to be shot as the messenger ... so dont act like the interviewer is the one passing out this stupid rule. You don't tell the INTERVIEWER that you tell whoever is actually responsible for it.
Fellas don't do it..there is no logical reason to not hire you based on hair length. Fight it tooth and nail until this screwed up country gets with the program
Well, what are you trying to prove? People don't want to hire you. let alone look at you if you have what most people consider BAD GROOMING! Go ahead, be a loser. Some other guy got that position instead. In the end he was more qualified than you are because he did not have the handicap of a bad attitude.
Yeah, I know how you feel. I was very upset when I had to cut my long hair. I had a ponytail. It was awesome! Please, keep your hair the way it is your hair is awesome! I'm growing mine back again because it's already past my shoulders now!
@IssmeSouSou He'll have to wait until either a trader Joes opens up near him of if there already is one then he'll have to wait until someone there leaves. What a fool. What kind of a person narrows their options? It is only hair. Complaining and bitching wont change societies esthetic. When long hair was "in", it STILL was only a fringe thing. One didn't get good jobs even THEN with this kind of long hair. DIe hippie die.
@Indygoguy whats your problem? you clearly don't even know what sexism, discrimination and racism are. because if you did, then you wouldn't be spreading your hate to the world. unintelligent zombies like you make the world a terrible place.
You're so right. You said it very well. This country is very fucked up. It's like, you can be your honest self and fucking die, or you can be a liar and work. I so long for the day individuality is respected and upheld.
real anarchists don't go to job interviews. real anarchists don't make video's or care about "corporate policies." real anarchists don't volunteer to, "wear their hair back, in a tight pony tail, under a hat, a baseball cap, a beanie, a pill box hat, whatever they prefer." lol you know what that sounds like to me? someone a little to anxious to become enslaved by some awesome rules and regulations! VERY anarchist like!!!
@JackwornHatter I don't think you're an ass just for being hopeful. I'm not giving up hope, for that matter. I just hoped you had some useful information.
@Lifecomesfromwithin well i sadly can not help, though i wish i could. i love my long hair and i think that it should not hender anyone from anything. i wish you much luck in you quest to find equal rites in this world of dicrimanation. (I know i spelled that rong... fuck it.)
@Indygoguy Wow, I guess there's A LOT of girls out there who are bad groomers huh? Get the fuck off. That's all I have to say. Doesn't matter how you look at it, it IS discrimination against men. Women can have long hair, men can't. The only difference is our body parts. I repeat, discrimination. Think before you comment.
@xanos4225: If that EVER comes up that's exactly what I plan to do. I'm an Asatruar and there is historical precedent for long hair being part of our religion and culture. I'm native European so it would be the exact same thing as discriminating against a Native American.
I'm having to deal with this sexist bullshit right now at work myself. I work at a hotel, nights. I've been working for 3 years and only recently has my job been threatened over the length of my hair. It's shorter than several of the girls who work here but that doesn't matter to my boss who's an angry old codger with a stick up his butt. I've filed a human rights complaint but as I've heard it's somehow not discrimination to discriminate against male hair I don't expect a positive outcome.
My school has suspended me because of my long hair. I'm in the UK and really need to find some hard evidence that it's against the law to do this. I don't know if you would know of any, but if you do, that would be great. So far i have found some court cases that file it under sexual discrimination, but none of them say if the case was won or not. Also, cutting my hair is completely out of the option... I love my hair D:
i agree with every point he made. i had long hair and my step dad told me to cut it or i need to pack my things and go live with my dad. that pretty F!#$ed up
I agree with this guy. I would much rather stick to my principles and keep my hair than sell out and get it cut just to get some job. BUT, it also makes me wonder, if these companies are sexist in this way, in what other ways are they being sexist, and am talking about being sexist not just towards guys, but the ladies too?
coming from a guy, i thing ud look nice with short hair if it makes you feel better, i have long hair and was told to cut it, i was surprised because i had it in a ponytail
Completely ridiculous. This is sexism. As another commenter said, jesus had long hair, I mean come on! You even offered to wear it back, under a hat or whatever they wanted! But nooo! You just have to cut it. BS! This is such discrimination. Never staying at one of those places. Completely ridiculous.
Ok i was with you until you said its a choice if you want to be black. No its not. we don't choose to be born black or white, female or male. it says what race we are when we are born just like what color our eyes are. Skin is the largest organ on our body. We can't changes our organs if they are healthy just to get a job -.- changeable things are hair, weight, face and boobs. people can't choose what race we want to be.
Im not disagreeing with you that that is morally wrong. However, you always talk about being able to do what you want and how the government shouldn’t regulate your actions. So if that’s the way you feel then don’t you think that that company should be able to make rules as they please and hire who they want?
It is in our nature for the hair to grow longer. Some people want to cut them shorter and some don't. That's fine, but hair grow long both on women AND men. It's totally natural. Therefore if someone wants to follow this discrimination very deep, all argumentation is behalf of men with long hair.
These societies are still under the medieval influence. I wouldn't believe in my ears when you said that after your research it comes out that it is legal for companies to discriminate in such way! O.o
I'm a veterinary medicine student, and I've never been asked to cut my hair. In fact, the only person who dared to tell me to cut my hair was fired afterwards.
I always wear my hair in a low bun, and dress very conservatively.
The situation you described IS a blatant case of discrimination, pure and simple. The only problem is that the law refuses to classify it as such. In Canada, the law only protects men from sexual discrimination on the basis of long hair if they have long hair for 'religious reasons.' (AS IF religion itself isn't a matter of choice!)
wow thanks for posting this i agree with you 100 percent. My bf has faced some discrimination in the workplace as well. You have gorgeous hair, dont cut it for anybody!
CRAZY PEOPLE! WHY CAN´T YOU HAVE LONG HAIR? IF WE CAN HAVE SHORT HAIR, YOU CAN HAVE LONG HAIR OF COURSE...WHAT´S UP WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE¡? NEVER CUT IT! YOU LOOK AWESOME LIKE THAT AND I´M SURE THAT IT´S NOT JUST A "LOOK" THING...I´M SURE IT´S A WHOLE PHILOSOPHY AND PERSONALITY BEHIND THAT...hey, how long it took u to have your hair that long once you decided to let it grow? dis u use something to make it grow faster? CONGRATULATIONS FOR THAT MIND OF YOURS!GREETINGS FROM MEXICO! :D
I have long hair, and was hired via 3 phone interviews and among many applicants to work at Fairmont Hotels, Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta Canada in the 90's. All expenses paid, 3 days prior to my flight, I was advised all men had to have hair shorter than shoulder length. I respectfully declined the opportunity to work there.
Another company that refused to hire me based on my hair was UPS, their temp agency told me straight out, "You can't work at UPS with long hair".
yeahh its fuckin gayyy maaan! im joining the army soon and i have to cut my shoulder length hair for a buzz cut! fuckin gay! funny enough a girl i knew had shoulder length hair and she got to keep her hair when she joined the army! what a load of bullshit! fuck sexism!
IT'S CRAZY you should dress-up as a woman in the interview and den wen the interview is done be like oh im actually a man and rip off ur dress to reveal a suit
Thank you,You should sue,its descriminating against your beliefs, and yet they have the guts to persuade you to change your lifestyle,Thats....Prettyserious dude,Go file a sue
not only this is sexism. if you cut your hair, it's also self mutilation. I am feeling you, bro. my name is also Daniel :D
I'm letting my hair grow and it kinda changed my view of the world. I started to notice all the bullshit I've been receiving from people. discrimination, people being clever with their snide comments and stuff... people are stupid... :'(
I'm usually not into guys with long hair? But you're cute with it. And yes, it IS obnoxious how long hair is like, associated with taboo behavior or something like drugs, so only people with republican-short hair can get jobs. Stereotypical much. My Dad had only shoulder-length hair but he had to cut it to get promoted. Blllaahhh...
Tyour hair is so beautiful that it's worthy to do all efforts to keep it long! No problem! Capitalism, Indistrial Revolution, Fase concepts mixed to Christian codes and the new slaveness, aren't stronger than a man's beauty with longhair! It depends on our ability to face with cleverness everything!
Its just like at some schools you can't die your hair unnatural colours ( green, purple, blue something like that ). Its like, why? Hair shouldn't stop you from getting a job, its just damn stupid to say. You should have been given the job.
What kind of job would I be able to get with near waist length hair? Im not talking about minimum wage jobs, im talking about actual careers. Im worried about this. My hair grows very slowly and if I cut it, I would have to wait another 6 years to grow it back to what it was. If any other guy out there has long hair and a career type job, please tell me what it is. Yes its my decision to have long hair, but it is part of me and would hurt too much to cut it, plus I think I look better.
I have a degree in Biochemistry and my career currently is working as a biologist. I grew my hair out long while working at my current job and received 0 comments from my boss or upper management regarding my hair. I did not attempt to make it look "presentable", just let it go wild. In fact some have told me that they like it! And this is in a small town midwestern US area.
I hope this gives you hope. There are other employees where I work which got hired in with their hair long, and now they are supervisors or managers.
Other long hair friendly careers include: music, art, culinary arts, academia, engineering, any science-related career, and many more. These careers value people who are unique and who provide new ways of thinking and therefore do not force you to become a "clone".
Wow, im surprised. This defenatly gives me hope. I expect the more "artsy" careers to be more tolerant, but I didnt expect science careers to be. Thanks for the reply! I guess it ultimately depends on the employer, but certain careers naturally be more tolerant. I remember watching this show on Discovery and a guy that was in one segment had dreadlocks past his waist. I think he was a scientist or car designer, im not sure. I wish I could find a video of it on here.
I came back from work today and me and my boss had a realy serius talk about my hair and its not even shoulder lenght and he told me I should go to a barber or I can no longer work there... but hair is more then just hair, hair is a symbol for me my hair says fuck society ... and most importand It feels like im betraying myself if I would cut if off
its a realy hard desicioin for me because I realy like working there...

It's natural for all people to have long hair. Female or male. The hair on our heads was made to grow. Your case isn't unusual and it really makes me angry. We are in the 21. century, we're supposed to have freedom, right? I totally hear you on this one.

MrPinkOfCalgary 1 year ago
My school has suspended me because of my long hair. I'm in the UK and really need to find some hard evidence that it's against the law to do this. I don't know if you would know of any, but if you do, that would be great. So far i have found some court cases that file it under sexual discrimination, but none of them say if the case was won or not. Also, cutting my hair is completely out of the option... I love my hair D:

jollybaby18 1 year ago
Ok i was with you until you said its a choice if you want to be black. No its not. we don't choose to be born black or white, female or male. it says what race we are when we are born just like what color our eyes are. Skin is the largest organ on our body. We can't changes our organs if they are healthy just to get a job -.- changeable things are hair, weight, face and boobs. people can't choose what race we want to be.
jollybaby18 1 year ago
Im not disagreeing with you that that is morally wrong. However, you always talk about being able to do what you want and how the government shouldn’t regulate your actions. So if that’s the way you feel then don’t you think that that company should be able to make rules as they please and hire who they want?

long haired men are so rare that when I meet one I'm in heaven. I guess it's my kink haha and yes, I'm a girl :]
DarrenJones 1 year ago
It is in our nature for the hair to grow longer. Some people want to cut them shorter and some don't. That's fine, but hair grow long both on women AND men. It's totally natural. Therefore if someone wants to follow this discrimination very deep, all argumentation is behalf of men with long hair.
These societies are still under the medieval influence. I wouldn't believe in my ears when you said that after your research it comes out that it is legal for companies to discriminate in such way! O.o

I love my hair now, and will never cut it.

Wow, im surprised. This defenatly gives me hope. I expect the more "artsy" careers to be more tolerant, but I didnt expect science careers to be. Thanks for the reply! I wish I could find a video of it on here.
