Glad to see that young kids are exposed to GOOD rock and roll, and not the stuff that talks about bitches hoes and killing all of em. Guys talking about lost love without having to talk about violence is real....
Why are people calling them underrated? Were you guys around in the 80's and 90's? They were very popular on radio and MTV played them all the time. Great band I saw them at the Ritz in Detroit way back then......great show too!
@pretzel127 yeah i dont know why nirvana and the grunge movement killed these guys? i woulda thought their music would have held up better than stuff like Poison or GNR compared to grunge. i think kurt cobain said the smithereens were one of his favorite bands or something
Sometimes great talent falls why the wayside as the Smithereens say themselves ''only a memory now that we are history''. While we get the that the great joy of endless rubbish like Nirvana and U2
So Great to see somany of you who appreciate these guys. I love thier music, and the fact that were never "Glam Pretty boys" They are sincere as musicians, and they are sincere as people. Music from the heart and gut indeed. These boys are the real deal
i think it's good good thing that young people get a good tast of what real music is like . stuff from the heart and gut. not remixed and copied. bits of junk. this stuff you play and feel. yeah,
i used to go to bed at night listening to this band on a continual loop. This song is like a lullaby. y have not heard it for 10 years and i have forgoyn mhat i have missed
I also got to see them many years before in Winston Salem N.C. at a Club called "Ziggy's" which sadly is no longer but if You get the chance GO SEE THE SMITHEREENS!!!
Great band ! Great song ! Great longevity ! They were a really important source of inspiration for many nineties's bands. For example : Nirvana. Listen '' Blood and Roses '' and you have '' About a girl ''... etc. Thanks.
lotta heart and soul in this music i always said they shoulda went alot further bu t i think in the time they came out they were a little ahead of the genre they were in and metal and diso were big then unfortunately for the disco part lol
disco we are talking the mid eighties right? i dont remember much disco in the eighties. there are alot of influencial bands that didnt get the recognition they deserved since the only outlet for bands like this was either college radio or if you got lucky 120minutes, remember when mtv played music?
yea i remember the smithereens on mtv i have a good memmory for stuff like that,.....they did a fantastic show in bayonne nj too bad bayonne botched up recording them for thier community channel people here do not know how to have a good time lol

VERY interesting that you would make The Beach Boys Smithereens comparison, Shawnster. The Beach Boys and The Smithereens just happen to be my favorite two bands of all-time. They're neck and neck with each other in my book.
Bad to the bone.

I'm ashamed to say I only just discovered this band. Very 'heartland' rock-sounding..can definately hear how it influenced 'Nevermind'.

Love the Smithereens. their 2 Beatles tributes and their new The Who tribute are masterpieces.
They saved our local country fair one year when Smashmouth didn't show and they took a bus cross the state to fill in with only a half day notice.
shmoug 2 years ago
@shmoug Smithereens or Smashmouth...yeah, your fair got the better of that deal, even if the 20somethings might not have recognized the name.

Heck, I'm a metalhead and listen to punk and hardcore, and even "I" like the Smithereens!
"Only A Memory" won me over when I heard it on the radio about 20 years ago and I have loved the Smithereens ever since! Seriously!
Pat's honesty and heartflet dedication to his music can be felt by just about anyone if they sit back and listen.
The last of a dying breed w\o a doubt. Honest to goodness heroes to the last chord.
