isn't the issue really whether Northern Ireland is part of the UK or not? If it has been English in some sense since the seventeenth century, with Irish Catholics who came there for the jobs in the factories, why not let those few counties stay English? It is hard to see how Ireland would be better off incorporating a few troubled provinces. The Northern Ireland Protestants have the same right to be defiant as Catholics. Just let everyone be.

I think Mr. Willis' point is fair, that Britain conducted, relatively speaking, a very gentle war of counterinsurgency. NI is the most heavily policed and known persronnel area in the world. isn't the issue really whether Northern Ireland is part of the UK or not? If it has been English in some sense since the seventeenth century, with Irish Catholics who came there for the jobs in the factories, why not let those few counties stay English? It is hard to see how Ireland would be better off incorporating a few troubled provinces. The Northern Ireland Protestants have the same right to be defiant as Catholics. Just let everyone be.

At the moment a proposition to leave the union would be defeated. But in 50 years time, presuming Ireland isn't too saddled with banking debt, there's every chance that a large enough majority will want to leave the Union

@mwillis1000 they do not kill innocent people. if there is a risk that innocent people may be kille, they will usually send a warning to evacuate, such was the case in a london tube train bombing, the purpose was not to kill anyone. when people are killed, it is usually people involved with the uvf or the military. any civillian casualties are usually crossfire or performed by splinter groups. the ira will often punish anyone who kills a civillian without a good motive.

I think Mr. Willis' point is fair, that Britain conducted, relatively speaking, a very gentle war of counterinsurgency. NI is the most heavily policed and known persronnel area in the world. If they had wanted to, they could have liquidated the IRA cadre at any time. Instead, troops had restrictive rules of engagement. I also wonder if Ireland would be any different at all if those six counties belonged the the Republic. Protestants are people too, and like Israelis they just want an enclave.

Third, the Queens visit is due to the better Irish-Anglo relations, and she paid respect to those who died in the Irish war of independence so more British are warming up to a unified Ireland. Britian imported food from its starving colonies like India and Ireland because the British considered the colonist less important then themselves. Britain has destroyed many aspects of other culutres. So Britain did attempt to destroy other people. @mwillis1000 The IRA did not target civilians. But if you want to believe that because it helps you get to sleep that's fine. The IRA only targeted legitimate targets i.e. military targets and financial targets, this being British Troops who were illegally occupying six counties of Ireland, their other targets were banks, trains, airports and so on to financially cripple the British Government of which they did succeed in. Unlike the Brits the IRA didn't target civilians deliberately.
