  • Who is this guitarist?

  • @gtrkstkon521478 Eric Gale- first call session guy, on lots of stuff you've heard, but didn't know who it was.

  • @gtrkstkon521478 The late great Eric Gale, of the band Stuff ...

  • grover washington ,the father of smooth jazz imho! RIP bro'

  • Eric gale was brilliant! If you want to hear his stuff shine, take listen to his rythm work on "Storm King", by Bob Jmaes!

That choppy but smooth overlay, is bad as he.. well you get my drift!

  • @free2bpoppie Yeah, that CTI/Kudu group of artists...yeah.

  • Grover Washignton jr., founder of the best music in the world colonies.

    :)

  • I actually found my way here looking for the version done in 1999 by Little Bitchard and A.A.C. Varjo. It's a house song, and while I like them a lot, it's always great to hear the original.

  • Grover Washington jr is the King.

  • I remember meeting this man at a place by the beach called the Strand. I was rude to him at first because I was really angry at my then boyfriend. He brushed it off and bought m table drinks and paid for our dinner. it was my birthday..After his set he came and sat with us and we had a wonderful time.. He told me any man that for got my birthday didn't deserve me. we agreed.. I dumped dude as a gift to myself.. RIP Grover love u.

  • THAT WAS A NICE STORY

  • I'm not a big alto fan, HOWEVER, Grover plays it so smoothly that I can't get enough,.,,,

  • Semplicemente incantevole!!

  • I can remember over the years many people having negative things to say about Grover's music- but one thing about it, his was outstanding then and it is great now, without a doubt. My wife and I have enjoyed seeing Grover and the Fellas a many a time, but one the most treasured was at Villa Montalvo with some great friends-four couples drove up from Los Angeles to enjoy a jazz filled weekend.

Long live the music of Grover Washington and the Fellas.

  • superb

  • One of my favourite instrumental tracks ever. Grover Washington Jnr ......what a talent he was.

  • i NAMED MY SAXOPHONE AFTER HIM!!

  • if u aint got it already get his "Live at the Bijou" album

its just the best thing youll ever hear in your life.

  • anthony jackson makin it happen @7:30

  • I've accidentally heard some kenny g crap on the radio. Came back to GW for an ear cleansing. As usual, I might say.

  • @Pitumisio Kenny G isn't crap, though he's no Grover Washington.

  • @Pitumisio I say kenny who? kenny what? who or what he is, he is not a sax but a crap man- Grover knew how to please the soul THANK YOU MR. MAGIC! I truly miss you! I will continue to cleanse my ear with your soulful sounds.

  • ERIC'S VIBRATO AND TONE, OH MY!

  • its mind-blowing, eric gale, you are amazing

  • yeah eric gales guitar is so wow

  • There is not gato vs. Grover...too far apart...both are great!!

  • Don't know how they could have played much better

than that!!! Just had a conversation the other day about Grover

at the Indy jazz fest to see Marcus Miller. Marcus

had some stories in the past about Grover, and playing

on "Just the two of Us"... ~D~

  • blessing to you

  • Great samba track. It looked like E Murphy shaking that tambourine! Everybody playing has got awesome rhythm.

  • Philadelphia's own Grover Washington Jr.

    May he rest in peace!!!!!!

  • MY two favorite sax players; Grover Washington Jr. and John Klemmer. Sad Samba, Let it Flow, Mr. Magic, and Klemmer's "Touch have got to be the best of the best.

  • Gatto Barbieri is another ace...do check him out if you haven't already.....cheers

  • I like Gatto's later stuff better than his earlier..but it still is great. Don't forget Ronnie Laws

  • hoo~~~!!!

  • I only heard Grover Washingtons music about a year ago by accident. I put on the wrong head phones and was ment to listen to something else. I sat there and listened to the whole album. I have never heard music like this before and it was exactily what my ears have been craving to hear. Every note with every instrument runs right through my whole body its amazing what great music can do for the mind body and soul. i now have every album released. Ahhhhhhhh Grover Washington Absolute Genious.....

  • mrbrancat:

My first experience with Mr. Washington's music ws so infectious, that I begged my father to get me a sax. He did, and I learned how to play it.

I never thought that I would get to his level, but to be able to play anywhere in the vicinity, has been a gift that I never hope that I lose.

He was a genius, and more of his and like-style music should be made available!

Check out his Paradise album, if you don't already have it.

  • Here in England in the 80s I fell in love with another man. I played this track endlessly, which makes it a bitter-sweet reminder now. Ultimately we got together and then I lost him to young-onset Alzheimer's. Music has such power. When I play this we're still around.

  • I'm in a school jazz combo and we play this piece, and I never knew how soulful this song really was, I dont think anyone is able to play alto like Mr. Grover Washington. so cool~ ^^

  • Cool.

  • 6:20 Nice Solo!

  • Grover was blessed with that fantastic gift playin´ his sax so soulfully like no other player I know.

But of course, also a fantastic band !!!

    May U B with GOD now !!!!

  • I wish he was stll alive, butt I gest we all are just passing through'' no one lives 4 ever, and by knowing that all we can do is live, and enjoy life as we know it. So let us rejoice in the graet Grover Washinton jazz music. In that way he lives on in our hearts.

  • smoother than cake icing....

I remember my uncle wearing this album out when i was little.. The main reason why i still bump Grover Washington to this day.. especially his vinyl album mister magic..

    RIP my friend

  • my man...when i was small i always thought it was cool he was painted with a hoodie on on the album cover and could stil make this music...dk I was little thanks and RIP Mr. Washington

  • Who is the guitar player on that video?

  • Eric Gale, enjoy! See also Stuff's Stuff and affiliated videos, or the DVD and CD "Stuff Live at Montreux 1976".

  • i used to wear this album out. brings back memories.

  • These posts are great. I love(d) Grover's music and his presence. He appeared to be such a 'gentleman'. The personal photos of him with his wife and children is just the perfect touch. He'll be missed, but forever listened to. Thanks again for this...

  • Grover makes that Sax talk to us. He is the MASTER at smooth, cool, soulful JAZZ!!!!!

  • Grover Washington Jr is the reason I fell in LOVE with the sax and JAZZ I remeber long vacation rides with my family as a youngster listening to Grover and various other jazz greats thanks DAD for loving and listening to jazz

  • I love sax, I still don't know why only gw can make a sax sound like he does. no one else can get that mind orgasmic sound out, kinda the way eric gales guitar is so distinctive.

  • this mans horn and his guitarist Eric Gales.. o man this got me into the world of instrumental music..and "jazz" I even bought a fender rhodes piano to play along with those great lp's

  • You know i really love grover washington jr ! his music is the sound of love & emotion in every way. The title of this song is perfect cus as i sit here and listen to it i think about the memory i made for myself, its of the day i first saw & meet the first & only love of my life, she's my world & everythang in it. I dont know what i would without her. I LOVE YOU VICKY ! always & forever, forever & always, untill the end of time.

  • wow my eyesight is going. Obviously that is Stevie Gadd

  • Nothing but the heavies here. Sweet@Low.I remember. We miss you GW.

  • Heard this in Bangkok, 1981 from The Quite Storm FM. My early exposure to jazz and samba. Too naive..still brings back those memories.

  • shits good!

  • This piece, to me, is absolute beauty in its purest form..

R.I.P. Grover Washington Jr, you shall forever live on in our hearts.

  • Is that Steve Gadd on drums in the background? God, this group is fantastic.

With all of the great jazz musician that have passed away over the years, Heaven must have the hippest jazz big band ever heard. JUst imagine, Stan Getz, Grover Washington, and Charlie Parker. Heavenly!!!!

  • uh Stevie Gadd is a white guy. My guess would be Steve Jordan.

  • those are some gnarly guitar faces

  • lol

  • he is and always will be my idol even over charlie parker

  • Unlike cheapos like kenny g, Grover gave smooth jazz a good name. I think about this when I hear people anxiously naming Charlie and Miles when in the middle of cultured conversations, if just to appear cool. Eric Gale's progression after 3:29, closely followed by Tony and Steve, is an all-time work of art; can't get enough of it.

  • There is noboby like Grover....the best phrasing and tone. He has been a great inspiration for me and I'm sure many others.

  • agreed.

  • "Make me a Memory" Grover your music will truly never be forgotten by your fans...You will always be remembered...Your music will live on. To me you was the best sax player ever, your music spoke to me...Your message was universal because it spoke many languages...your music rejuvenates the spirit and wakes up the soul and brings inner peace. Play on Grover "We will always remember you." "Long Live the King of Sax." May you rest in peace.

  • Oh Eric Gale....That performance sent a shiver down my spine.

    Barry

  • I just realized Eric Gale died in 1994. It is odd to hear about someone this skilled passed away without any notice...

  • I have most of Grover's albums and have seen him twice in concert. Both times, I saw him I experienced unforgettable and supreme joy. He gives 110% to his fans. When it comes to tender, light, emotion-filled expression he is second to none. There might be a couple others Jazz giants who are more technically superior, but he's number ONE in touching the listener by bringing to life the beauty we know in our minds but so seldom hear or feel.

  • He was the best sax player for me, and his best lp is "paradise", one of the most unknown... Sorry for my bad english, I write from spain...

No crees?

  • RIP

  • The greatest Sax Player ever. Yes even better than Kenny G.

    RIP Grover Washington Jr.

  • Please reserve the capitals to name real artists. Grover surely deserves it but not that other cheap sax player.

  • Grover is an inspiration, best tone ever

  • willirey9, I pray you go to heaven, just so you can be the one to clean his mouthpiece before and after he plays for Jesus...where is to love man? Leave your hate outside yourself and you'll see it will disappear as soon as a good breeze blows by...

  • EXCELLANT TUNE marks6338

  • mama mia mama mia best evolution music in the world by gipsygiony

  • I hunted high and low to get the GWJ Live at The Bijou album, it has got to be my favorite live Jazz Funk album of all time.

  • Ms Texas: YES....this song was the background music for General Hospital on the episode where Luke proposed to Laura, the night before the Art Auction. I think that was May 1981. It's hard to find now, because it's not bundled with the usual Grover compilations. But I think the short version is on the 'Winelight' album.

  • it is on winelight 6min32sec superb.

  • Eric Gale's guitar solo was so awesome. The best part of the song. I loved it.

  • Although I was literally raised up on 70s jazz...Grover was the one that made me a jazz ADDICT...just listen to this? and THIS particular song from this particular lp was SOOO popular *as was the whole lp* that it made it to the soap operas..>General Hospital to be exact....if played on daytime tv...it was a hit!

  • vancouver has a lot of memories because of this song

thank you grover washington jr. and whoever POSted this video

  • I love Richard Tee playing the Fender Rhodes piano.

Very sweet voicing and sound. Anyone who know what effect he is using on the Rhodes? Sounds like a small stone phazer.

  • That is precisely what it is. The Elecro-Harmonix small stone phase shifter. Richard Tee used THAT specific effect pedal for his Rhodes. Just as it (not the MXR phase 90) was used on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are". For Rhodes piano.

  • Sorry for the typo, I meant to spell "Electro".

  • Thank you!

  • hit it right on I love rhodes..

  • smoother than cake icing...... he was so tight..

  • Ralph MacDONALD you are"The Man" on percussions,Whew! Brother U kickass"!!Nuff Said"

  • I got interested in Jazz, listening to a boot leg copy of this video nearly 20 years ago. 20 years later it still sounds as good. What band. Sad that a few of them are no more.

  • This is on dvd my friend...check amazon...it might be on there or ebay...

Yes, it was YEARS ago when I first saw it too...addicted to his live performances....My mom saw him EVERY year here in Cleveland at the Front Row and then downtown.

  • His Winelight album is the perfect pop/jazz crossover album. I've listened to it thousands of times and I never get tired of it.

  • You MUSt start at least with Mister Magic and listen to all of his lps in succession...they REALLY do blend one right into the other...TRY IT.

  • Hie,

Sorry if my english is bad (I live in France).

    It's so groovy my friend.

Sorry, I,only, have some vinyls ; at their beginning with Bob James. I like them all.

    Thx

  • Well now! This is brilliant. It's that classsic sound, that he pioneered--the very definition of smooth jazz, before there even was a smooth jazz. I actually like this version better than the standard (Winelight) LP one.

  • Washington,Gadd,Gale what a treat to hear. Paradise for the soul and ears.

  • what brand of alto does grover play in this video?

  • H. Couf Saxophones

  • This video is a treat. What an ARTIST! This melody hooked into me as soon as I heard it about 5 years ago. Thanks for posting.

  • just thank you ...

I ve the jis the best of 73-85.

The one with candles and flowers

I fall in love every time I listen to it with a guy ...

    This album enbodies love.

  • I Like this Song

  • The greatest one here is Richard Tee!!! Pitty he hasn't got a solo, but he accompanies everyone so beautifully!!!

  • I,m agree with you. He is the king of fender rhodes piano with the very beautiful sweet sound and nice chords/rythm. He died pretty young.

  • NO MORE WORDS! Just listen and enjoy

    Thanks

  • Amen.

  • I mean really...what ELSE can be said about Grover? Hope he knows just how much we wuz diggin' on his music.

  • DAMN

Merci

  • Standing ovation for an outro that's really OUT OF THIS WORLD. PERIOD. Respect for Gadd, Gale, Jackson; all the glory for the late GW.

  • DELÍCIA...... Just like heaven

  • fantastic!

  • I remember this song from PBS, between Seseme Street and Electric Company.....wish I was a kid again!!!1

  • YES!!! PBS was INFAMOUS for playing what we now call smooth jazz between their shows...

Here in Cleveland it was this order though...Sesame Street ...then Mr. Rogers...then Electric Company...and can't forget 321 Contact!

  • I play and love this song

  • eric plays melodies. very very nice,he makes the guitar sings

  • marks6338..sir, you are a genius! Where did you get these clips from? Absolutely unbelievable. Eric Gale is my hero. What a lineup on here. Some of the greatest session musicians backing the wonderful Grover.(R.I.P.)

  • As smooth as smooth can be, yes sir!
