Hey GunnyRules, post a video of your dad Ed Gunny's winning still ring routine in the 1966 NCAA championships. His straight arm pull to an iron cross from a hanging position to open his routine was epic. At the time Modern Gymnast magazine called it the mythical iron butterfly. Your dad was also great on the horizontal bar.
@wayout3 No kidding -- I saw the film shortly after the Nationals. GunnyRules put me in touch with his Dad who was a hero and sometime mentor of mine, since I used to workout at El Camino College, and he said he would post it -- it really should be up there. NOBODY is using that mount anymore that I know of. He also had a high bar dismount -- a 1 1/2 off the backside -- he said the first time he used it in a meet one of the judges came out of his chair to try and save him! LMAO
@corvettecam97 There's no way this was 2009. You can tell by the video quality that it's from the '70s, plus that's when they had these flying rings on that beach, They don't do flying rings anymore.
This was not the first quad ever done, but it is being done by Dennis Sherman who did the 1st quad on July 20th 1969 at about 2:00PM PST 20 min after the 1st moon landing. Greg Friel did the 2nd quad one week later, Mark Davis was the 3rd , and Val Dero was the 4th.
@DWSQuadman Right -- at least somebody remembers the details. Mark Davis was an incredible high bar man, too -- and he may have been the first to compete a triple off the High Bar.
I believe the guy who did that quad back then was Mark Davis and he was a good friend of mine when I was on the Southern Illinois gymnastics team. Richard Hawthorne
I also believe he got some great coverage in the Modern Gymnast magazine also as the first to ever throw the quad. I wonder what happened to him. I heard he was in the circus for a while, but that was just rumor.
im sure if we had swings like that on the play ground we could all do that...sure there would be a broken bone here and there but you know when we were 5 we would still do it...i know i would have lol kids are crazy
even better guys my father ed gunny has alot of these old videos from his younger years I am sure now he will post his vids to show this generation what tough really was!!
your dad eh? i just binged this fellow and the first 3 sponsored results were about erectile dysfunction (and eeverything else had nothing to do with acrobatics) so unless he was the first one to discover it too, he isn't as famous as he should be :P
Yes it's true. I was there -- at muscle beach in Santa Monica. There was a "triple flyaway club" -- about eight guys who threw triples off the flying rings. One of the most awesome of these guys was Louie West, shown here doing the first quad -- it was around 1968. The club included some NCAA champions like Ed Gunny and Dan (peaceful warrior) Millman. This film really takes me back.
@Jesusdragon737 the first "crash pads," now known as 8 inchers, weren't around until the early seventies. In the 60's the best we had was 3" horsehair (!!) with a panel mat on top. We used to do floor on the basketball court!
@missmouse35 There were two events in the olden days -- Still Rings and Flying Rings -- They did away with the flying ring event because it was considered too dangerous.
The Quad is at 50 seconds! This is footage from the old Santa Monica Gymfests from the late 60's? Early 70's for sure. Mark Davis was, I believe, the first to throw a quad on flying (swinging) rings. The sand was piled up for a soft landing, but I would imagine still possibly treacherous.
I have seen this video many, many, times before, and this is not the first quad ever TRIED, but it is the first landed. There were other attempts, that didn't work out so well that were filmed, but it is too close to the people and hardly visable.
