  • in 94 she was diagnosed with colon cancer, and at her last bday she danced her last dance saying she is happy with her life and what god gave her. she then went to organize her coffin and funeral. her last wish was to see fareed in heaven.

thats her life in short, you can return to my first post in the previous page to read the whole posts from the beginning

  • in 85 then realized her money is getting lesser and lesser, so she left her famous apartment in cairo to use the rent money and lived with her sons in her old sister apartment and used the money to let them complete their studying. at that time economic changes were huge in egypt, and all prices became higher. so in 86 she returned to dancing when she was 62, tourists came to see her, but then after months she left dancing when her older son/nephew found a job

  • roshdy a very famous actor and a kind man from a famous family in egypt, but was alcoholic and a womanizer, that was the reason for problems between them, but since they loved each other, they were able to be married for 20 years, in 78 he was drinking all the time and they were finally divorced for the third and last time. he died in 1980 due to drinking problems

at that time she adopted her nephews and gave them money to complete their school and university studies, they were 5 sons of sister

  • she then decided to return to egypt, she couldn't take any money with her back.

she started again working in many successful egyptian movies and her salary became the biggest between stars.

in 58 while acting the movie the second man she met her second husband roshdy abaza, a famous actor, they married for nearly 20 years, they had 3 divorces but once divorced they were soon remarried. roshdy had a girl from a previous marriage that samia adopted, and she stopped acting and dancing in 62

  • she then decided to end her relation with fareed and married an american man to get out of the country and the press.

she married a wealthy man who became a muslim to marry her, his mother didn't approve that and didn't give him the family money. samia worked in many clubs in us and was successful but her husband who became her manager took her money, and when she asked to take the money he refused. at the same time the 52 revolution erupted in egypt and the king went to italy

  • one journalist made a comment that samia can't marry fareed nor farouk cause they are both royal and she is only a country girl who became a belly dancer, he meant farid not farouk cause it was impossible for the king to marry her any way, he was just making fun. when she knew she cried for days and taheya asked farid to marry her but he couldn't for the reason i told you before. when samia finally confronted him he had nothing to say so he told her she's king lover and the all country knows

  • in 49 king farouk made her the national dancer, ending formally the era of taheya but she and taheya remained friends till the end, samia danced in many national occasions, the press made stories about an affair between her and the king, but nothing is proved, she always denied having an affair with him

in 51 she went to paris and danced to king farouk in his vacation and his friends , the press in egypt covered the story in a way that angered farid

  • at her bday, he gave the present, the contract of the movie, she nearly fainted. the movie shown in 47 is one of the most successful movies in egyptian cinema history. they starred in 6 movies together from 47 to 51

troubles began between them when she asked him to marry her, but he couldn't marry her or any one else and remained unmarried till the end of his life cause he was a druz prince and could only marry a druz woman

another problem appeared when king farouk appeared

  • in 46 fareed was bankrupted and the owner of the club refused to up his salary, he decided to leave the club so samia decided to leave the club with him too, she went to work with a huge salary in a club near suez canal.

fareed who is a great singer and composer decided to make a huge movie and asked many businessmen to support him, so samia decided to support the movie without his knowledge, she didn't know he was going to ask her to star the movie with him

  • one director decided to give her a chance and she acted in a movie, but political unrest forced the director to cut many scenes from the movie that it had no meaning, at first day audience tried to beat the director and actors, samia returned again to being extra in movies

at the same time she and fareed was having a great romance

in 44 she acted in a movie and succeeded, then in 46 she was the star of a very successful movie although she didn't dance in it

  • so she went there to congratulate him, farid told the director that she is a crazy teen dancer that is obsessed with him, when the director saw her he decided she has a good face and asked her appear in a scene, she was scared but when he told her she is going to be near farid she approved, she was 16 and appeared only for few minutes.

in 42 she was 18 and was so famous as a dancer but she wanted to appear in movies, she appeared as extra in few movies.

  • she then wanted to prove to the owner she is completely different dancer now but didn't have a badla to dance solo, taheya gave her a badla , the owner was convinced of her abilities so he allowed her to dance solo and in no time she became so famous of her new style when she was only 15

at that time, she was so attracted to an older singer at the same club who is fareed el atrash, she used to sneak in to listen to him singing, she knew he was going to act in a movie

  • when she went there taheya was so famous and the queen of belly dancing, she had a stage fright at her first solo day and everyone was shouting we want taheya, the owner decided to make her dance in groups since she is still young and not mature. she decided to take dance lessons cause she believed belly dancing is not just a local dance, she took lessons from mr izaac dikson and ballet lessons from a russian teacher. she also decided to play sports to make her body flexible.

  • thats samia real life, her mother died when she was 6, she lived a hard life with her step mother who didn't allow her to go to school to clean the house and beat her, then her father died when she was 8, she ran to her older sister but her husband made her work in a factory, she used to listen to neighbors radio and danced to the music, she went to cinema with a neighbor and was blown away and decided to work in show business, she then left the house to work in badea tiatro

  • this is the whole movie watch?v=DOah8EEqufI

  • thank you cinemormex, i will try that

  • what is the name of this beautiful music she is dancing to?

  • @gypsijewel that's eyptian melody from the 40's and 50's try to search for 'farid al atrache' to know more

  • Comment removed

  • Does anybody know what song this is?

  • @Cranberries87 it is from the movie ما تقولش لحد or "dont tell anyone" in english, the music is compsed by farid el atrash. you can download all movies from the internet but in arabic, she acted and danced in nearly 50 egyptian movies. many movies are in youtube too. just search in arabic. the movies are famous and shown in arabic channels too

in that scene, she is in paris in a trip leaving her lover in cairo, the old man in the middle of the scene is jealous from her lover

  • Everyone talks about her and other Egyptian dancers being graceful.... I dont find her graceful at all. Her movements are often jerky.

  • @lisalrocks Millions will disagree with you!!!!!!

  • @lisalrocks @helios180746 i bet! this was a jaw dropping comment for me!! i guess it's because they r from a totally different culture and background even the music its important for u to be fimiliar with it so you can enjoy the movements and know their beauty! well like it or not this is real bellydancing and whatever imitaition of it in western programs is just trash really!! it even disgusts me seeing our art being performed in certain way by others

  • Secret of magic success in belly dance is simple. You must dance for your own pleasure, for your happyness. Like Samia dances. Only subject to this condition you can become real belly dancer

  • @Damajanti2007

SO TRUE, really loved what u said

  • so natural dance.

  • Samia my favorite vintage belly dancer!

  • She is the Egyptian Marilyn Monroe and she is a great dancer!

i gave up on nowdays bellydancers.. seriously.. leave bellydancing for those black and white stars.. no1 can top them..eveR

  • @lilMissF0F0 I agree In this day and age it seams anythig any music if they wiggle passes for belly dancing or so they think!

  • samia and tahiya karyouka and naima akif are the best dancers ever

  • She dont dance as well as nowadays ladies..

  • @Zee1553 Are you serious? I think she has about 100 times more grace, class, and charisma than most nowadays ladies, not to mention subtle control of her body movements. I keep trying to watch modern belly dancers and often I am just struck by how slutty they look.

  • @hempenasphalt I can see that her dances is not grace. Well she too was trying to look slutty Because slutty dance is the perfect dance ever. But she cant make it. I see that she is not good in dancing?

  • @hempenasphalt Well, bellydancers are slutty dancers. But she tried to look slutty but invail. I think she dont dance really well.

  • @Zee1553 I think she dance pretty good. She looks playful and cute. That is my opinion.

  • @hempenasphalt Sure pal. Its all up to you. No offends.

  • @Zee1553 none taken. you know what they say, de gustibus non est disputandum.

  • @hempenasphalt Yeah

  • @Zee1553 If you think bellydancers are slutty, why watch bellydance videos? Don't be a dick. Appreciate it as an art form or don't comment at all.

  • @Sacred90Lotus I like to watch slutty belly dance you jerk. You dont have the right to tell me what to do. Unless she is your mother.

  • @Zee1553 belly dance is slutty dance right? Thats what i think. Because when they dance belly dance, they have to wear sexy clothes and show their stomach. Thats why if i see they dont dance well means they dont dance slutty enough.

  • @Zee1553 bellydance is not 'slutty'. it's a dance of joy and sometimes sensuality. the stomach is bare to highlight isolations and show movement. If you like bellydance, don't insult people by calling them sluts. And if you knew anything about the skill involved in bellydance moves, you wouldn't call Samia Gamal a bad dancer. She's not my mother, but if you're going to spread hate and insult people, I have the right to tell you that's not ok. Just be nice to people. It's not hard.

  • @Sacred90Lotus Well i didnt start to say the word 'slut' first. Its hempenasphalt who said that first. Adn he said mordern belly dancers look slutty. So he too insult them right? its not really my fault. I just made a comment abt Samia Gamel only.

  • @Zee1553 bellydancers are slutty dancers? clearly you know NOTHING about bellydance.

  • bella y glam i love her

  • she is so beautiful

  • Was she dancing in the 40's? I think Ali Baba was from then.

    She danced in that film.

  • Pure, so eloquent and natural!!!! beautiful samia gamal, RIP

  • Wonderful oriental belly dance,

Oriental belly dance is pure art, very graceful, powerful communication between rhythms and dance,

    Wonderful Samia Gamal,

I am sure that there are young oriental dancers that look up to legends such as Samia Gamal, and other classic Egyptian dancers,

    Yalla Raqs!

    Yalla Masry!

    I love Egypt!

  • @jespana10

You bet! I for one, certainly do. As do many, many other dancers in the world. Samia is very dear to me!

  • That is good to hear.

I wish all oriental dancers success in developing another golden age of oriental dance throughout the world.

  • Omg you have no idea, i love her so much. I didnt knew it was possible to love someone you never meet. She is a role model. Her smile makes me so happy, and how she moves her hand. She is pure, and she is beautiful. She put all her feelings in bellydance. Her bellydance is so beautiful a blind man can see her and a deaf man can hear her dance.

  • I am sure that individuals who appreciate her dance will continue that legacy.

It is important to let everyone know that belly dance is pure, beautiful, art.

As long as there are teachers and students, the memory of her dance and her moves can be taught from generation to generation.

Continue the legacy of Samia Gamal.

  • @jespana10

I would do anything to learn her beautiful movements, but i learned bellydancer bymyself so im gonna do this time too. Even if its gonna get hard. Itsn ot about just her movemnets you have to feeeeeel her.

    She is best!

  • MonaTheBellydancer,

I support you and all the belly dancers that respect and honor the legacy of Samia Gamal, and all those that honor and respect the dance as pure art, healthy, beauty, and grace.

  • sadie is nothing compareing to samia

  • Always a pleasure to watch, she may not have the technique of some modern dancers but the modern dancers lack her grace and soul in the dance.

  • She's known in Egypt for bringing classic moves to belly dancing making it seem more graceful. I luv her along w Tahia Carioca

  • She is perfect!

  • Why they put another music, this is not the music of the film

  • Do you know what is the original music of the film?

  • This song named Raks el gezlan?

  • el est trop bonne

  • The contemporary belly dancing might appeal to many of you but that doesn't mean it holds the true essence of belly dancing. The real belly dancer is the one who sets her self free when she dances and enjoys every moment of her dance until you no longer know whether she is dancing to the music or the music is playing to her movements. It is all about grace, grace and grace. Once the belly dancer consciously thinks about any technique, it's no longer the belly dancing in its truest form.

  • Look at Samia Gamal's eyes, smile and her hands. Every single part of her body is unconsciously following the wave created in her belly. It might appear insignificant to you but the whole body is moving gracefully around the centre (i.e. the belly).

When English people translated the word "raqs sharqi" into bellydancing, they just killed the essence of our oriental dance.

Back to the clip, thanks for sharing another great dance vid from the eternal Samia Gamal.

  • If that is your definition of belly dance, then I guess everyone who moves gracefully, even though they have not been trained in belly dance, can dance to some music and set themselves free in a flurry of movements and that can be called belly dance.

As the commenter said below, belly dance has branched and evolved. You can't say that contemporary belly dance styles are not belly dance the same way you can't say that human beings are not human beings because we are not Homo erectus anymore.

  • However, I do agree with you that Samia is very graceful and has facial expressions that go beautifully with her dance. She is radiant and pleasant to watch as she dances. I also find her very pretty. She is a good dancer, that we can't dispute. I just can't imagine that many consider Samia the best belly dancer by virtue of her being one of the originals. Original deserves credit and praise, but original does not necessarily mean the best.

  • My definition of oriental dance (what westerners call it bellydancing) is that every part of the body is dancing gracefully around the belly without forcing it or making it look too technical.

The contemporary bellydancing i see in sadie's clips gives me an impression she's working out her abs in rhythm.

Bellydancing has evolved throughout the years. Watch out for Suhair Zaky and Nawga Fouad whose styles were different from those of Samia Gamal and Taheya Carioca yet all exude the grace.

  • Anyone can move their bodies in rhythm but not anyone can do it in fluid-like manner. It requires a real talent and dedicated training to achieve that. The same goes for ballet and other forms of dancing.

I don't believe in the game of the best because everyone of us has a different perception of what the best is. Also, each of the original and contemporary bellydancers has her own space. Me liking Samia Gamal doesn't mean she is the only one out there.

  • In general, i think the old-style belly-dancers use more footwork, wich is consider the most difficult part of belly-dance. And consider they dance on heels!!!! They also keep to the rythm very well.

Well, wether you prefer this style or the newer style, it's for sure i've never seen a woman with such a waist, haha!

  • You are right, and I also would add, that nowadays there is almost NO education in rhythms or music interpretation anymore, which is the essence of the oriental dance = translation of the music with your body. This is a cultural loss and with that, a loss of the foundation of oriental dance.

  • True, there would have been no Sadie or Rachel Brice without dancers like Samia Gamal. We have to give them credit for that. But I say Rachel Brice and Sadie have improved on belly dance much. The belly dance that they give us now have more complicated moves and take a greater level of skill to perform than the one on this video.

  • You are judging bellydance as though it's just about movement, taking it completely out of the cultural context. Many people will argue the Tribal Fusion is not even bellydance.

The fact of the matter is that neither Sadie nor Rachel, lovely as what they do might be, truly reflect the cultural essence that makes this dance what it is.

Wearing bedleh and being able to isolate and move well does not make bellydance.

In this respect Samia Gamal will always be superior to these ladies.

  • Well, as long as a dance is kept alive it will go on evolving. Dances never remain stagnant as long as there are people dancing and teaching them. As you have noticed, most dances that are "faithful" to their cultural contexts are considered boring and unappealing alongside their derivations. The derivations are there because they are, in more ways than one, improvements of the dance.

  • If you use that argument to say that all the other styles of belly dance are not really belly dance, that same logic can be used to prove that the English language we have now is not really English as it has deviated hugely from Old English, the "original" or "real" English, because the Old English is a Germanic tongue while the English we have now has borrowed a lot of words from French. We have American English, British English, Australian English, etc. And they are all English, aren't they?

  • As someone with a language background, i would be the first to say that English is the Tribal Fusion of languages =)

It's a lot of stuff from alot of different roots, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as we acknowledge it for being that.

Similarly i would acknowledge Tribal Fusion, ATS and even AmCab as being not original bellydance but fusions - BEAUTIFUL fusions, but still fusions, just as modern English is beautiful, but not original english.

  • With that in mind, I don't think anyone can simply say that other belly dance styles are not belly dance.

There are a lot of people who love Samia because she has paved the way for other belly dancers. For that she deserves the credit. But we can clearly see that when we talk about skills, Samia loses the top spot to many other contemporary belly dancers.

  • I don't believe anyone is busy claiming Aussie English is better than American English though - because it is recognised that they are DIFFERENT for cultural & historical reasons and therefore have different characteristics.

  • To follow up from your and my posts above - Samia & Sadie can't be compared as one being better than the other because their styles have different characteristics. One might talk about which style you prefer. Saying that sadie is BETTER for doing something that Samia doesn't is as absurd as saying that Brit English is better tha American because it spells colour with a u.

The skill set for Western Bellydance is DIFFERENT from the skill set for Egyptian, so i don't clearly see your point at all.

  • @halfpintmya thats the best way to respond. in addition we should consider at the same time that without samia, tahia, and all the other egyptian jems of that time there would be no Sadie, Jilina or ANY western dancers for that matter. Those women were true visionaries, rebels, and innovators taking a folkloric dance customarily performed in front of family and friends and making it a hypnotizing and glamorous performance art.

  • @halfpintmya Well said!

  • @halfpintmya Che is the most and wonderfull Bellydancer of the World Luc Clymans

  • i have always loved her, so much better than that Sadie girl.......plz don't compare

  • Boring as hell! Is that bellydance at all? That just looks like interpretative dance. And you dare say she's better than Sadie? LOL!

  • You're cross comparing styles even which doesn't make any sense, you can't compare AmCab with Egyptian and measure them by the same scale - the two have very different characteristics and it is unfair to both to compare them in this way.

Your response just makes you appear to be quite ignorant.

  • It does not take an expert to see moves that appear to be more technically difficult, but it DOES take someone knowledgable of the dance to recognise that it is about FAR more than technical proficiency.

I've said it before & i'll say it again, wearing bedleh & doing superb isolations does not a bellydancer make.

Sadie is lovely at what she does - AmCab, but she can't compare to what Samia is to Egyptian style purely because she's missing the cultural essence & it shows.

  • Dance isn't about executing movements, it's about GRACE and personality. Some people can execute 1000 movements but still is something missing in their performance...

  • One shouldn't compare any artist with another, but this to understand might take about 30 to 40 years of life and experience in dance. So, young bellydancers, believe us older ones, because we know it better.

  • Are you sure that you wanted to address your message exactly to me? Sorry, I don't see any relations between your message and mine.

  • it was meant to be for

    iuyaneli.

  • @GalinaMora Well said. If you can't FEEL the music, what is the point of dancing to it?

  • If you want to know what the real art of belly dancing is,search Sadie BellyDance at youtub

  • Sadie is not the best in bellydance at all, and "real bellydance" can be considered a lot of styles and techniques. There is not a "real bellydance" or a "best bellydancer", there are only too many styles and a lot of excellent bellydancers. You need to open your mind and see more than Sadie.

  • I, too, love Sadie, but she would be nothing without people like Samia breaking ground before her. I'm sure Sadie herself would agree - she's just the modern face of bellydance.

  • I agree with the others who replied to this comment. There would be no Sadie, Rachel Brice, or Jillina if it weren't for the legendary dancers who came before them. I agree that one needs to open the mind and see more than Sadie-sure, she is great at pop and lock, but Samia has a classic LADYLIKE presence, unlike some of the things Sadie and her partner Kaya have performed.

  • gorgeous!!!

  • name/performer of the song please.

  • I wonder, if you can compare Suheir Zaki with this dancer from Afghanistan.

    watch?v=ywGoVb9Vdho

USSR & Americans devastated Afghanistan for their strategic reasons, Russia needed access to hot waters & coalition need gas pipeline through Afghanistan.

Afghan & its culture was devastated well before Taleban came in.

Twooooo bad,one failed 2nd is good to go home :)

  • anybody know wich are the name of this song??'

  • she is the only one who knoews how to do it

  • She is the most beautiful dancer I have seen and I have seen so many of them. She is gorgeous woman and a gorgeous dancer

  • i love samia gamal she was always fun and beautiful and just lovely

  • This is what I call beauty and grace. Gorgous samia

  • One of the true greats.

    What a pleasure to watch.

  • Samia Jamal is my favourite dancer

  • I love samia gamal she's so unique

  • she's the best

  • thats wat i call dancing

so professional that the music plays with her body

    i adore her

  • Escelente video

  • LOL yasin is always funny as hell

  • dont hate on her, shes a beautiful belly dancer

  • of course she is not perfect, but her arms and upper body carriage are the most beautiful things in her. If she had them any "higher" she'd have that stiff ballet posture, which is problem with most dancers who were trianed in ballet and began oriental dancing as adults. Samia started both when she was a little girl and she has the perfect balance: the grace of a ballerina and fluidity of an oriental dancer!

  • She has a very beautiful fluid style :-) but I do have to say that I think her arms could be more graceful and her upper body carriage a little "higher" (if that makes sense) But of course no is perfect and this was danced during a different era of bellydance.

  • why do people send messages like these? Are you getting something for it? jeeze!

  • Beautiful and Classic. She is one of the original queens of Raqs Sharki!

  • wonderful i love her and love fareed

thanks for posting you have great taste for art

  • Oh my god, that costume wants me!

  • This is a real dancer, how graceful

  • really beautifull samia gamal was a really great dancer. some one know where can i download this movie ?

  • shes the best

  • Sorayada if u want to know why she's so great, u shud stand infront of a mirror and try copying her. Only then will u understand why everyone thinks she's so great. Her dancing is so unique it cannot be imitated.
