Actually Cherryville is about 230 miles from Wilmington. It's maybe 40 miles west of Charlotte. This particular rail line runs from Forest City, NC all the way to Wilmington, via Charlotte and Monroe.

On 7/13/66 Seaboard Air Line trains #45 & #46 hit headon about a mile east of the station.
J.W.Pait of Hamlet was killed in the cab of GP-9 1927.
Locomotives involved, 1911/1927/1963/1971/1979/4027.
5 GP-9's and an F-3.
Took SAL about three weeks to completely clean up the wreckage.

There's a framed copy of the newspaper article about the wreck hanging on the wall of the Cherryville Railroad Museum (former SAL depot).
