  • coming out in the late eighties was a scary time thank u jimmy for givin a voice to the feelings i had inside which i knew nothing about .u gave me hope in the darkest times of my life . xxx

  • amazing song, amazing perfomance.... utterly stunning

  • Gay Or Straight,Heartache Feels The Same

  • For my dear friend Eddie Williams II: May 1960 to November 2007. Your long struggle is over may you rest in peace. You still live in my heart.

  • why is it nearly every song by jimmy u get peopl say im not gay but i love the song WTF has it got to do with the song if the singer is gay, lesbian, trans, bi,or straight it shouldnt matter what they are just enjoy the music they make

  • This is a truly heartbreaking song. It brings back so many memories ...

  • Beautiful.

  • A TRUE FRIEND IS SO HARD TO FINED, BUT THIS SONG TELLS THE STORY VERY WELL ABOUT HOW YOU WOULD FEEL, ABOUT THE LOSS OF A TRUE FRIEND .

MY FATHER TOLD ME ONE TIME, IF YOU CANT LAY ON YOUR DEATH BED AT THE END OF YOUR LIFE AND TRULY SAY, I HAD A FRIEND , THEN YOU WILL BE A LUCKY MAN !

  • 12 people never watched the sun go down.

  • hey great song i am not gay but wee jimmy can belt oot the tunes and they are all good too

  • To me this is a song that can be sung for anyone anywhere.Lovely lyrics.

  • This song always gives me goosebumps n makes me cry, even before I understood its true underlying story, the raw emotion and grief expressed are jusyt so powerfull

  • Jimmy was so brave he was out gay frion the start! At a time when the media was very homophobic!

  • good old cottaging. They were great days back then.

  • brilliant!

  • For my good friend,John(Janice)Bailey,1992,R.I.P. Never forget you, pal, love you always!

Jimmy has done as much,if not more, for the fight against AIDS/HIV & discrimination, bigotry & hate than many of today's so-called celebrities who only jumped on this particular band-wagon coz it raised their profile.I was diagnosed in '92 & I will always be grateful to Jimmy for his tireless works in this area! You're a diamond geezer,Jimmy,& you ROCK!

  • I admire everything you stand for but your voice says it all! Please come back to us mere mortals!

    !

  • @rachelkkk100 the voice is all, the voice and the emotion, what it stands for is everything, the love, the pain, the memories.

  • timelesss, ageless, many years since I heard this and still blows my mind, I love you Jimmy your voice is in a league of it's own, never mind the strength of the context x Rachel.

  • that bridge is spot on,makes me well up

  • Not interested in all the gay stuff /child like comments (I've nothing against gays, times have moved on and each to there own I guess.) but just digging the soprano sax in the sound! Well chilled. :-)

  • @cobboldblue ,Well, that's your choice, but remember,it IS a gay anthem, and always will be.No-one gave a shit in the early days of AIDS/HIV coz it was only 'queers' who were dying,so it didn't matter to the public and governments around the world.Oh,but then, shock, horror, hetties also started dying.THEN the world sat up & took notice! So I'm glad you've got 'nothing against gays',how very tolerant of you!

  • @popazz1 Your post is fascinating. There is so much emotion in it that its almost tangible. Thankyou

  • @kevphillips02 ,

Yeah, thanks for that.Sometimes I do tend to rant but what the f*ck,if I can't express myself without the muppets having a pop at me then what would life be all about, lol.Appreciate your kind words, fella!

  • @popazz1 It must have been horrendous knowingyour friends were dropping like flys. I was always terrified of catchng the virus . The song means a lot to me because i identify with the sentiment and the raw emotion expresed in it. It also reminds me of the lonliness i felt in my youth being bisexual and having to be so secretive. I knew the lyrics applyed to me but only i knew that. Alienated , alone and always a deep sense of sadness for the real person deep within. I now own the my true self.

  • @kevphillips02 ,

The sad fact is not a whole lot has really changed in terms of attitudes towards the infection rates.Yeah, admittedly thoseof us who are infected are receiving much better treatment than was available 30 years ago & we're living longer. But to a large degree it's still seen as a 'gay disease' & therefore not worthy of much interest. But hey,I don't wanna come across as a 'moaning minnie',lol!

  • @popazz1 you're not a moaning minnie! You're brave!! xxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • @ShillakerJoy ,

Well bless you for that, matey. But believe me,there's plenty who WOULD call me a moaning minnie, lol! And they certainly would NOT call me brave, hahaha! I just get on with it,like millions of others have to! Thanks for your kind words though! :- )

  • I lost my friend and soul mate in 1986 we were 14yo, I remember this song back then it helps to release and remember covered over painful emotions, it summed up with perfection my feelings then and now for him and those more recent lost loved ones. Thankyou Jimmy Sommerville for putting into words what I find so hard to say.

  • This song was specifically written for Jimmy's very close friend Mark Ashton who died of AIDS on the 11th Feb 1987. Mark Ashton's death at the age of 26 was a very sad loss to many but it did lead to the creation of the Mark Ashton Trust by Jimmy & friends. In death his name raised much needed funds for people living with HIV/AIDS. Why would a God punish Mark Ashton with AIDS so young and yet allow a paedophile priest to live to old age. There is no God.

  • what a fantastic singer

anybody know what hes doing nnow?

  • @iwontshareyouify Jimmy still does music. He has just this month, Jan 2011 released new tracks. See the web for Jimmy Somerville – Bright Thing Remixes.

  • @mufc99ok

if you hate gays so much why listen to their music? if man is made in gods image then gays are honouring him because they are making love to him

buddhism is the only decent religion as it cannot be twisted and misinterpreted as is the case with christianity you sick moron

  • @iwontshareyouify i dont hate gays , what the fuck are talking about honouring god by sodomy oh my god what stupid statement you clown ,read my last statement again where did aids come from its a punishment from god adam and eve not adam and steve , buddism what a load of bullshit did you here about the buddist monk that died and went to hell god allowed him to come back he said it was beyond words it was that bad hes now a catholic priest what does that say you clown

  • @mufc99ok If Aids is God's punishment for gays how do you explain that lesbians are the lowest risk group for contracting the disease? He fucked up there didn't he?

  • @mufc99ok

your mother sucks cocks for 50p a throw

if im a clown, what does that make a cunt like you who believes there is an old man with a beard sitting on a cloud who created us in 7days 5thousand years ago

  • @Whamesl0l well, thank u 14 year old boy for explaining me but it´s a fact that this singer is gay.

  • @mamfilord thanks for pointing that out, we know hes homosexual, but its not really relevant, the music is what counts

  • @mamfilord IGNORANCE...You are the reason this country is soooo behind..

  • Always loved this song....least i got the chance to meet you jimmy, hope you are well. love jx

  • THIS SONG SPECIALLY RE MINDS ME OF THE OLD DAYS , THE FORGOTTEN LOVE N THE MISSING FEELINGS

  • THIS SONG SPECIALLY REMINDS ME OF THE OLD DAYS , THE FORGOTTEN LOVE N THE MISSING FEELINGS

  • This song brings back memories of a friend of mine.

  • This song has so many memories for me.

  • This song has massive relevance to all the people who were dropping like flys 20 years back from the AIDS virus.

I guess it is relevant to anyones sense of loss and grief .

Anger, denial , bargaining , sadness and a wish to retrieve what was .

Life is one big grieving process from which we hopefully learn greater depths of love and acceptance. Whatever the loss there will be grief.

This song was not given the recognition at deserved as Dublinkiterunner has prviously commented.

  • great track, underated & never got recognition it deserves

  • I am so sorry about your loss...Hugs.

  • Thank you sweetie! :-)

  • super

  • Jeden z najlepszycz utworow Jimmego. Dla mnie najlepsza grupa po dzis dzien. Warto zyc dla takiej muzy.

  • How can a song this good only make no.28 when some shitty drivel that Cheryl Cole spews out makes no.1?

  • Rips my heart out everytime i hear it..pure genius.xxx

  • C'est fou, cette chanson nous offre un véritable, et rare moment de grace, et de nostalgie.

    MERVEILLEUX !

  • Délicieux,

    Quelle voix et quelle maitrise,

    Quel remarquable talent,

    Adorable, et Beau Jimmy !

  • This amazing song ALWAYS makes me cry.

  • This song contains all the emotions in true grief. Loss, sadness, pain, anger and rage for being the one left behind! And a philosphical yearning for some answers to it all. I've lost more relatives, friends and loved ones than I care to remember and this song still makes me cry.

  • Been down this road myself at a very young age and have sympathy for anyone else who has and gone down this long road.

    Respect

  • Perfectly put...

  • @TheCressyboy I could not have put these words better myself, your words are touching and i have travelled down the same road myself many, many times and it does not get any easier.

    My respect to you.

  • @TheCressyboy Absolutely so many lost people to HIV and AIDS which I believe this song is about!

  • thank you for posting this x

  • I'm not gay, but I have always loved the Communards' incredible music. Listening to it now, it sounds just as comfortable as it did when I bought the album in 1987. I don't really hear most of the lyrics, just the music and two or three of the big lines, but that's true with a lot of music for me.

  • Thank you for posting this song.

5 years ago almost to the day since I lost my Mum to cancer, and 8 since I lost my nephew to still-birth.

Time goes by, but the pain carries on..

If you can't listen to this track and cry for someone you have lost, you ain't human.

Life goes on, we all know that, but losing someone bloody hurts, it makes no difference how and why they left you.

Rest in peace, Mum and Daniel - I will love you forever.

  • couldn't agree more. Amen.

  • I really really dislike the vocals in this but this song contains a real message and story.

Sorry to all those who have lost a friend. I have lost one to a car accident and another to suicide and, quite frankly, it shouldn't be something that we have to go through but unfortunately that is the way the world works.

Anyone who has lost a loved one or a friend (same thing really?), keep thinking of the good times and perhaps we will get to see them again someday.

  • very beautiful song!!!

  • So true when we lose friends or family we can never hold them or kiss them again. Dedicated to those who have gone before. Till we meet again xxxx

  • Just come from a friends house.worked with him for over twenty years in the fire service. He has bowel cancer.I wanted to hug him and never let him go .Never leave it too late to tell someone you love them .Straight guys can love other Guys also.

  • Well said. I to lost my best mate last October, he also had bowel cancer. I really hope your mate gets better, i really do. Keep your chin up. Graham

  • Well said and not a truer word spoken. I am sorry to hear about your friend and the pain you are feeling. I have been down this road many times and know exactly how you are feeling. Never be to proud or feel uncomfortable to give someone that hug.

My respects and regards to you and your friend and hope that everything will turn out OK

  • I totally agree...same story here...met him in the late 90`s in Cologne...

  • Fortunate is the word! Tonight I'm thinking of all my friends, dead so young . . . Sometimes, it's so cold!

  • It makes me dream. When i want to feel good, i hear it and everything is ok.

  • I must comment that this is the first time I have heard this song and it is brilliant.

  • I heard this song for thousand times, so in touch, really really my all time favourite!! I LOVE IT.

  • This tune is very heavenly! God bless Jimmy. God bless us all who have lost dear ones! God bless the haters in this world.

  • so sad, gives me chills!! makes u appreciate ur friends a lot more!! and tell them u love them! ♥

  • What a brillaint voice and a great artist.

  • Deeply moving and beautiful song, sang by a unique and remarkable artist. :'-(

Not many songs put tears in my eyes like this one.

  • Brings goose bumps to me every time I hear it. Then tears..exactly what a great song should do. Amazing song!!!!!!!!

  • This beautiful song reminds me every time of Douggie, Sparky, David, Neil, John, Chris, Chris, Glen and all the others lost but never forgotten.

  • Quel talent ce délicieux petit renard roux aux petits yeux coquins : à croquer !

  • I miss my best friend as much today as i did then.............." i never cried....... no but i never cried as much either. Sarah i miss you

  • A masterpiece which owes as much to Richard Coles magnificent panio arangement . Saw Richard - now Rev. Richard - on Newsnight Review last week. This is in the same league as the Beach Boys 'God Only Knows' and Marvin Gaye's ' I Heard it Through the Grapevie' .

  • haha

  • Yes, a masterpiece! And a beautiful evidence of love and friendship.

  • for me it is one of the best songs, ever had written.

Some of my friends died and Jimmy remembers me

to them anytime, I listen to this song

    Thank you so much Jimmy

  • the 80s where bad for music? hasn't any 1 turned on the radio recently?

  • gay or straight who gives a sh** beautiful song

  • What a God Given voice after what happened to him as a youngster, and a Small Town Boy @ that!

  • Oh...this song makes me cry...beautiful...

  • this song reaches out to anyone who has sufferd loss brilliant

  • meravigliosa

  • A great piece of music, especially the piano at 2:22.

  • The Communards waren mit das Beste was die sonst eher dürftigen Achtziger musikalisch hervorgebracht haben. "For a Friend" ist phantastisch schön!

  • I disagree that the eighties was a bad decade for music But I do agree that it is a beautiful song.

  • ...one of the best songs ever written, hard to listen to without crying! I always asked myself how he could perform it without crying.......it is amazing!!

  • perfect comment!!

    g8 tune!

    brings memories from the 80's

  • But, JS once did cry when singing it. I read that on a page of JS Fan Club.

  • Great song great singer, gay.... could not care less!

  • tHIS SONG IS AMAZING AND IT IS A SHAME THAT SOME PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO DISRESPECT OTHER PEOPLE'S SEXUALITY.

I BLAME JERRY SPRINGER FOR THE NEED FOR PEOPLE TO INSULT OTHER PEOPLE'S SEXUALITY.

I AM NOT GAY, BUT WOULD NEVER DREAM OF INSULTING SOMEONE WHO IS. ( JUST FOR YOU IGNORANT SELFISH PEOPLE OUT THERE !! IF YOU CAN CALL THEM PEOPLE ) YOU CAN BE INFECTED WITH AIDS WITHOUT BEING GAY.

  • Cheers,

I just thought that for someone so vociferous about what we should be standing up for that Michael Stipe dodged the question for so long ,basically until he'd achieved what he wanted and more.

Jimmy Somerville in my view must have made it easier in certain ways for gay people, at that time.

If only by breaching the subject.

In my opinion a person has no obligation to even discuss their sexual orientation and I hate the'outing' principal.

I just think support could have been given.

  • Its a beautiful song. The content...of course, aids..im gay, but..it holds a place in my heart. Loss. thats enough really.
