@birdyman03 Yeah, I watched the vid as a recommendation from a friend, having not seen any of it before (I couldnt beleive McShane had been cast in this, after just knowing him as Lovejoy). When i saw the first episode, i though 'Fuck, someone on Youtube is gunna pull me up about that'. Ha.
From what I heard, Deadwood was canceled because the actors were asking for a substantially larger paycheck. They just couldn't pay the actors what they wanted.
They should have tried raising money through fans to pay the actors to finish. It's such a shame that a series this great was shutdown so abruptly. I think they could have done more to keep it alive.
I think Al Swearengen is a closet homosexual. He's had to be brutal and vicious to compensate and mask his homosexuality. He sees a kindred spirit in Mr Wu as someone who is an outsider and thought of as less than human. I think he sympathizes with him because he cannot hide his ethnicity as well as Swearengen can his sexuality and yet Wu struggles against a society that would belittle him for his difference. I also think Al is secretly in love with Bullock and wants to ride his cock
Al was "from" Oskaloosa, Iowa. He died a broken and broke man in Denver, Colorado. I was born in Oskaloosa,Iowa, and grew-up in Denver. I love this version of Al. Deadwood (the series) best show ever made, with the exception of Justified.
All those carpets Al has had to change..must have cost him a fortune. You'd think he would have atleast put a pan under his throat to catch all that bleed-out. Now Jewel's gonna spend a month scrubbin' it.
God, I miss this series. There was talk for two years they had written 6 to 8 hours of material to finish the story with another short season. But the idiot producers thought the "John from Cincinnati" crap was better to go with - yeah right, cancelled after one season.
Get everyone back and finish the last season...the ratings were there!
Also, I thought it a great scene when Al euthenized, not murdered, the preacher. It showed it could care about another's suffering.
@sinskater123454 No, make no mistake about it...Al is a murderous and evil villain - but probably the greatest villain of all time because of what you basically point out - the fact that as evil as he is, there is still something about him you like or can even love. THAT is the key to a great villain - pure evil, but nearly likeable...maybe because we all see something of ourselves in him.
Is it just me, or does Deadwood's dialogue seem like a hellishly excellent blend of Shakespeare, John Ford, and Yoda, with a bit of George Carlin and Richard Pryor thrown in for good measure?
"We show united in the prelude when he's making his entrance and the fucking like. When it comes to viewing the body, I stand for virtue alone. The deception failing, I'll make a pass at him with my blade. In the aftermath, play the lie as mine, knowing I speak of you in heaven."
The first quote in this clip, "What a type you must consort with, that you not fear beating for such an insult". Knowing the circumstances and the characters, that quote is hilarious. I love it. I love Deadwood.
Funny part was the end of this scene when Johnny Burns and Dan are carrying out the Pinkerton, Johnny says "this is the longest a carpets' lasted in here"
such a shame that this show was never taken further, Ian McShane alone would have been worth watching. HBO have produced some great stuff and no insult to The Wire or the Sopranos (both of them awesome) but I think this was the better show.
@Pyrrhic24 I honestly couldn't pick a favorite between the three. You can't even choose a favorite really if you appreciate them all. They're all masterpieces.
You know, at first i hated this guy a lot.Really did.But as the episodes progressed until the final ones the series make you have a second thought and notice that deep down there is some good in him.Kudos to this wonderful TV show and that magnificent actor,Ian McShane
If I might be permitted to indulge myself and, unworthy as I am, deign to affect a reasonable verimisiltude style of writing as is set out before all-comers in the show; and also illuminate an arresting prescript on the comings and goings of one messer McShane which likely to surprise a British bastard would cause a fuge of disbelief in our American cousin - can it be credited that this force of nature, this rough hewn icon, was in leaner times Lovejoy?
when i started watching the the series on dvd it took awhile to get use to so much cussing but after watching a few dvd's I started to admire his cussing as an art form and no one is his equal
@/JLKnoxville CY WAS COOL THAT GUY WAS COOL I LOVED THE SCENE WHEN A FRIEND OF HIS CAME TO HIS SALOON AND WAS SICK AND WAS LAYING IN THE BED WITH SMALL POX AND CY SAID THIS IS NOT A FUCKIN HOSPITAL AND THEN HAD 1 OF HIS ASSOCIATES DUMP HIM OUT IN THE OPEN TO DIE THAT WAS COOL I WISH I COULD A DONE THAT
the two of them worked for the rival saloons but both were ope fiends and pillaged one of the supply trains to get their stash. Al, Sye, and Wu talked it over and decided that one of the white guys had to go to appease the Chinese (to insure the continuing import of opium), so he chose to murder his own guy as an example instead of giving him to the Chinese to torture or letting Sye have his way. I think Al did the right thing. The other guy gets his later.
he drowned jimmy irons because he killed the chinese opium courier and took his dope and a piece of the dope was going to al for sale and i dont think he whacked out the other guy
I don't recall any other scenes together off hand... I interpreted that scene as Al being the ONLY person that could possibly scare the shit out of Jane. Al was Al and Jane seemed to be pissing herself.
@andeaver1937 Yeah, after the Sophia incident, Jane stayed clear of that "cocksucker." She did go with Bolluck and Utter to get bullocks guns and badge back, but that's not one on one. Neither care about eachother and business does not cross paths between them
Calamity Jane was at one time a whore at Fort Laramie Three-Mile Hog Ranch. Milch has a penchant for exploring the dependent/co-dependent relationship, and here, though it is an early scene in the series, it is true to a vision of a woman terrified of returning to that former life, and all the ghosts that haunt therein.
Swearengen has to be one of my favorite villians. (I love a good villan more than a hero.) He is one of the most evil "cocksuckers" out there but he has a code of honor and despite his best efforts to hide it he does have a heart. Ian McShane plays the best villians. One thing that always surprises me is how gentle his real voice is. If I just heard his voice when he is out of character I wouldn't know who he was. Even when he plays good guys his voice is much more powerful.
FEAR NOT Fans of Deadwood, as a young filmmaker, I will do everything in my power to complete Deadwood. I am 17 now but I promise that when I gain international acclaim, producing a Deadwood movie to finish the series is at the top of my to do list :)
Its a shame this show was cancelled after 3 seasons. Ian McShane's character Al Swearengen is probably one of the best villians I have seen anywhere. It was good to see a western that accurately detailed how Deadwood really was.
Wasn't a villain? Choking and physically abusing women, murdering customers/miners. I would think that would classify him as a villain. His character certainly made the show though. The real Al Swearengen was married 3 times and all of his wives claimed they were physically abused repeatedly (along with the many prostitutes he abused also).
I didn't say he was a nice guy. But overall his character had integrity and basically worked towards the general interest of the population at large. Cy tolliver was a villain, and obviously mr. hearst, never mind his geologist. those types of characters fascinate me as they represent more of a real life gray area than the 'superhero' that's often portrayed. One reason why i like "the shield" so much, it illuminates how good+bad can exist in one personality.
You would not want to be staring like that, at me.

He was a very interesting and layered character with great depth. But certainly, he was a villain, on the whole.

Someone needs to make a music video of nothing but scenes of Swearengen with the song "Bad Mutha"
"Look at me. Know what cha see? Ya see a bad mutha"

Al was the best. He could be so cruel yet so funny at times.

Kind of reminds me of the character Powers Booth played in Tombstone. Just a bit more on the bad side.
