WAS THIS THE TORNADO THAT TWO BROTHERS FILMED SEPARATELY ONE IN SADORUS OR IVESDALE AND OTHER IN EITHER SIDNEY OR PHILO? ALSO, THE TWO BROTHERS LATER WAS ON WCIA TELLING THEIR STORY AND WAS SEEN ACROSS WHOLE USA TOO ON CBS???
I was working at Monicals in Tolono that afternoon. The new backroom was just up, no door yet. Wind and debris blew through the back room clear into the dining room. We were in the hallway by the bathrooms praying! Thankfully no-one was hurt.
I remember this well. I was 9yrs old. I was with my Dad at the site of Countryside United Methodist Church between Sidney and Philo. We were on the roof of the parsonage next to church putting roofing shingles. My Dad looked to the southwest towards Philo and you could see the funnel cloud off in the distance. Everyone scattered home. The tornado hit right at the Philo "Y" and ended up hitting the Butzows Quarterhorse Farm north of Sidney. This Tornado turned into Twins just north of Sidney.
I was going to school at Sadorus when this tornado hit but luckily it happened on the weekend.. I remember looking out the window of our house in Tolono and it looked like that tornado was coming right down the railroad tracks behind our house but when it got to Tolono it lifted and went over without any damage but I remember finding pictures in our yard that I beleive blew here from Sadorus.
this storm was significant in that it held a wind speed record for some time, back when the technology was not as amazing as it is today. There were several noteworthy tornadoes in the 70's that were not associated with the Super Outbreak of 1974. This was one that was particularly noteworthy at the time, and even yet today.
if anyone has pictures of the farm on the southwest side of Sadorus after this tornado hit pls let me know. People don't believe the damage that it did there. I watched it rip the barns apart.
did you live on that farm? I was in the basement home on the south-west side of town, along with 5 others, when it hit. I'd like to discover the location where the video was shot. PLEASE HELP, ANYONE!!
This video was shot near the Champaign-Piatt county line about 4 miles southwest of Sadorus, or about 15 miles southwest of Champaign. The tornado is right on top of Sadorus at about 0:45 in the video. The person who lived on the farm was Dale Wilson, who was also a WCIA-TV news photographer.
About 45 minutes later, this same tornado struck my hometown of Westville, Illinois, blowing the roof off of Judith Giacoma Elementary School in Westville.
On this day, I was in a truck at the intersection of University and Lincoln...(Urabana, I think) There were tornadoes all over that day. I watched one in my truck mirror trying to touch down near Philo Road. The Champaign and Urbana Police did a great job that day getting the warning out. That was one crazy day. Thanks for posting..
I live in Urbana in Champaign County. My dad remembers this well. The southeast side of Urbana was taken out in '96 and most of the town of Ogden. Did this tornado hit Ogden? Also...for standards around here, that is a big tornado!
hey' I live in western champaign! no, this was in '76, not '96. my uncle who lives in urbana was outside at night when he heard a loud roar, like nothing he ever heard before. then the sirens blared. scary!
I lived in Champaign county for 7 1/2 years of my life. I didn't know this tornado existed. I wasn't alive in the '70's, but i shudder to think what might have happened to my hometown-to-be, Champaign (the city) if it had been hit.
it was an F4 and the strongest ever to hit the Champaign area. from the NWS:
3/20/1976: This violent tornado originally touched down near Decatur, and traveled 63 miles across Piatt, Champaign and Vermilion Counties to near Danville. It entered Champaign County just south of Ivesdale, and went through Sadorus, Tolono and Ogden. If you go to Central IL on the NWS site, it will be on climatology of CI/ECI tornados. Ogden would be hit by an F3 20 year&a month after this and be destroyed again.
no, this is really the sadorus twister. just about 15 miles away the state basketball tourney was taking place at the assembly hall at the university of illinois in champaign. about 15,000 people were there and needless to say officials were hugely thankful this storm passed just to the south.
My dad was telling me about this one. People don't believe me when i tell them that tornadoes DO OCCUR in Champaign County. In Champaign/Urbana, people almost always ignore the warnings. I don't want to know what will happen when we have a very large tornado like this go through town. gives me the creeps....
Ogden IL has been torn up TWICE by tornados..I remember...some time back in the 70's...there was a complete house..( the park Rangers ) ripped from it's foundation and dropped into Homer Lake...there was still furniture left behind in the basement. Also..about a mile before you get to the lake..the tornado had snapped an 80' tall oak tree in half and then stuck it upside down in the middle of a field. I had that picture for years but can't find it. It was an amazing show of natures power.
The video clip actually tells quite alot of details about this tornado's strength, not only from the amount of debris being hauled in, but the dust trails that you see at the base of the tornado on it's East side, gives a good indication of how much inflow the tornado had, and it looks to be quite alot, and of course stong tornadoes have a good inflow :)
Yet another gem from you AC and yet another top rating :), thank you for uploading this :) Willie

My grandmother still has the newspaper clipping of this tornado. Someone else got it on video and another took about twenty pictures of it.
