Never understood why Sleepy isn't more commercially known. He's an astonishing performer who appeals to rockabilly fans as much as country ones. And he's kept company with the best. Just not had as much success.
I first heard this song about 1965 sung by a 'bar singer' in Butte County, California. He had a line that went ... "I'm a Long Tall Texan ... I ride a big Jackass ... I'm a Long Tall Texan ... I ride a big Jackass ... People look at me and say ... Is that your ass?"
...great clip..thnx.. for all those who think Sleepy La Beef is a not known singer/artist...i tell u that i live in Greece, and i know him and his music for many years now (since the 80's)... as most of the people who listen to Rockabilly music down here... he is not my favorite, but i have huge respect for the guy... thanks, and keep up all the great work!!!
Hey, this guy was just at my yard sale. No kidding. He lives in NW Arkansas. He opened for Elvis before the Ed Sullivan days. He is still going strong. He is a cool guy with tons of history and knowledge about American roots music. A great guy to talk with.
you guys actually know who this person is?!! i never heard of him, i thought it was a joke! oh stop throwing beer bottles at me, i'm here aren't i?!! i'm just sayin' i never heard of him, but that coulda been 'cause i lived in a cave all my life. i know who dwite yokum and buck owens are. they walked the streets of bakersfield..
@m1kewithaone I saw him at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz back in 2000 and would have never heard of him if I hadn't read about him in a book. he's been around for decades. he even autographed an LP for me
@Behutet93 cool, i bet that was fun! hey i have a question, i was in santa cruz a long time ago, and went to the amusement park they have on the beach there, and when i saw the movie, the lost boys, i always thought it looks like that place there in santa cruz. do you know anything about that??
This was a performance on UK television in 1987, when Hank Wangford hosted a country music series. Hank & his band toured the UK during this period with Sleepy.
I saw Sleepy playing in a bar in East Moline, Ill. 1967 when I was 21. I was shocked when I found out a few years ago that he was still playing. He was born in 1935 - same year as Elvis - and is still performing. He sells his CDs on his website, He has some great tunes. Thanks for posting this video.
Where's the BEEF???? That was our cry when The Labeef would play at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River in the summer. What a great way to spend a warm evening: dancing around with other Sleepy fans!! But what I want to know is what has happened to our big bad man??
@calionstallion sleepy la beef?? who the hell is this!? i never heard of him. i'm going to ask my sister, she's from texas. you ever heard of pampa tx? well, ok, and i never heard of sleepy la beef! but i'm laughing...
I have become a Sleepy LaBeef fan with this rendition of Long Tall Texan. He has performed the consummate version of this song. The accompaniment of Hank Wangford and the Hankerchiefs with Bobby Valentino are as good as it gets. I cant stop playing this song, its that good.
great singer. he does a song. when the lord made me he made a simple man not much money not much land. . can any one help here. whats the name of this song.. thanks
The song you search is Blackland Farmer, originaly recorded by Frankie Miller. You can also listen Poppin'Johnny and Family réunion by Frankie Miller and many others are great too.
I saw him shortly after this playing at The Sir George Robey with the Wangford band (without Hank and Cissy). It was hilarious - they really didn't know what was coming next. The encore was about ten songs in five minutes.

I'm embarrased to say I had never heard of Sleepy until I stumbled across this video. Best version ever of a classic song!

I love how Hank and the other guy are watching Sleepy toward the end of the song for the finish. They look like the are in awe of him.

I believe that with this production number........the "IS THAT YOUR EXC.." +should be sung,, by the back-up n not the lead singer
I'll do my best to sent a video to you about this....LONG TALL TEXAN Mr Labeef I believe would enjoy, doing his lines, with a happier tune.
