I've been to 2 LODD (line of duty death) funerals for fellow firefighters, T.O. Fulce and Phillip Townsend, here in Denison, TX. Yesterday, the Dallas Police Dept buried an officer killed doing his job. People just watching it on the news can only imagine the loss. It is tough. God bless the family of this fireman, and his co-workers. May they have the strength to honor him and keep on working.

i never said paid firefighters have it easier than volunteer. i have many friends on both sides of the service and have plenty of respect for all of them. my point was that as a paid firefighter your husband generally knows when he will be away from home. yes they miss holidays but they have a work schedule and know ahead of time when they are working. i don't know what you mean when you say "we get paid to sit at home" becaue i like most vollys don't get paid at all.

Last easter I ran a call where a vehicle overturned and killed a Grandma and 2 grandkids that were driving home to surprise their mothers, later than evening we ran a call for a "subject slouched over in a chair, unresponsive", when we got their it was a Full Code, 3 hours later we left the hospital for a 2 vehicle MVA(which was now at 11:45 P.M. advising "occupants Ejected". One of them was a Trauma Code, the other DOA.

I had a few close calls that could have ended my life, but, by God's grace I survived.

I was told that the service would 'get in your blood'. Almost 20 years after being out, I still feel adrenaline when I hear a siren. The deptartment I was with is now paid and my nephew works there.
