@HariVIyer those are strips of string/paper/ or whatever to see the aerodynamics of the rider. the wind will pick up the "strings" and whichever way they blow is the travel of the air around the rider.
@Lemonro1 are those the wheels that are like a solid disc? may be because Kona is really windy and it would be hard to control the bike. Just a guess.
Great data collection session. Thanks for sharing. BTW bike is a Speed Concept Series. It does not have the integrated seat tube case, but it is probably a prototype of the 9.9. I am betting they where out on the lava fields to collect data and map CFD data from the rider so the bike was stripped down to the essentials.
@ridings18 Speed Concept Series 9.9 or a prototype striped down to collect Computational Fluid Dynamic data from streak lines at laminar, transitional and turbulent flow on the rider.
@mtbxcfreak just little tassels of light fabric, basically what they do is show how his air flow is on certain areas of his body..if they are very straight and still then it means he has very good air flow there (aerodynamically) and if they are twirling around and erratic then he isnt getting the best air flow there...
@pimpy200 if u wanna be fast, get a TT bike, if u want to be comfortable and be able to ride with groups of friends and what not, get a road bike, they are way more maneuvarable. but the TT bike's where its at
TT bikes are fast and beautiful and awesome, but they are NOT comfortable for longer rides, and SUCK for climbing. Time trial bikes are like interceptor fighter planes - made for fast speed in a straight line.
I have a few suggestions ... get a triathlon geometry bike, but with relaxed angles ... somewhere between a pure road bike with a seat angle of about 74 degrees and a pure triathlon bike with an angle of around 80. I suggest you go for 78 degrees or so.
if i had to guess i would day 27+ because of the excessive bike swing that comes with extremely high speeds on a tt bike. i've noticed for me that when in the aerobars, at around 27+ i start to swing around and get a little unstable so im guessing thats around the say as lance.
can someone say why alot of timetriallers now how the areobars up ..is it just the time of year being early season..takes less out of the body and less energy spent if your resting more if up higher than having bars straight horizontal or lower. maybe its just that it being early season. would be good to know.
your right about his position not changing much here.but in general I think alot of top testers are changing back to the up right position. it went through a period of flat and minus flat now up.Lance tends not to change his.I wish i had his lung power tho..look at the size of his rig cage..its unreal.
Yeah, he's definitely a gifted athlete physiologically. I read somewhere that his leg bones+femur developed in a way that enhances his power delivery to the pedals. It shows you that no matter how much we train, genetics can still play a big role.
to the person that said he is going 29-30mph..errmm that is totally wrong..sorry fella but this vid shows him to be going at least 35-40..id say 35-36 hovering.,Look at the background.I know what riding 30 is like in time trials and this is way lot faster than that.Looks like a crosswind too.. amazing stuff.
@deus555 that's an interesting observation, but it is typical for a time-trial position. Also, his weight would not fully be pressing on the saddle under that kind of load. Of course the odd pot hole or bump in the road would not feel so good on the nads. It's all subjective but even then, so much endorphins and pain from the legs you may not even notice that..
he may have a little residual pudge from the off season (we all do!), but yeah, by the time the classics and france come around, he'll be good old lance!!!
That's not a gut. LOL He has on a cooling vest that he is testing out. TeamRadioShack posted some videos previously about temperature testing and how the vest can keep his core temperature cooler, etc. I think the vest kinda bunches up right there around his waist when he is leaning over. =) That's my opinion anyway.
@Drosophilamelanogas from the looks of it, and depending on headwind and all, in that position, he's probably hitting 29-30 mph. pros will normally hover around 30 mph on a time trial bike.
aha! you see! a few people said the first TRS bike was kinda ugly but I stood by my word that other paint schemes will come out and yes this one is very good looking.

@mewoyou the strings are placed on the body to test for airflow to make them as aerodynamic as possible. Just like they do in a wind tunnel.
chrisbear08 1 year ago
are those strings for decorations, or are they recording or measuring something?
mewoyou 1 year ago
Why is he riding such sucky wheels? They aren't even deep rimmed.
nightowl8936 1 year ago
@nightowl8936
He's ridding to find out the most aerodynamic position (that's why the strings are added). He's not trying to go fast as to used deep profile wheels.
