When I first heard about walmart employees working off the clock, not having healthcare etc last few years, I felt sorry for them, but not now. If things are THAT bad there-get a Union! What do they have to lose?

Her name was Carla right? I loved her comments about Sam Walton rolling over in his grave about what his namesake company has become. She gave a great speech. All I have to say to you all is Welcome to Corporate America. If not Wal-Mart it would be another large corporation that everyone would target. Other places sell junk that's made in China, they just charge you more for it.

Exactly, chino. Wal-Mart is just the worst example because it's 1.6 million workers in this country but it's all the same deal these days out there. Sell the country, its people and our future down the river, all for an extra buck at the end of the year.

But in this case, Costco is a good alternative. They pay their workers 18.00/hr and their CEO makes 300K a year, plus stock but COstco is good. They cover 85+ percent of their people with health ins. and have an auto-enroll company matched 401K plan.

Costco is a great alternative to Wal-Mart and they have far superior food to Wal-Mart's stuff. And this begs the question: if Costco can do it then why can't Wal-Mart?

Are you saying that you support or condone Wal-Mart, an immmensely profitable company, ripping off the taxpayer by forcing their associates' children on to the public dole?

The always low prices should include the charge to the taxpayer of Wal-Mart business practices. Medicaid, WIC, Section 8 and the rest, we pay for those always low prices.

According to the Wal-Mart movie the managers hand out the sign-up sheets in the damn stores. Get a grip.

Besides, Costco doesn't do this.

They cover upwards of 80% of their employees with health care, the average wage at Costoc is 18.00/hr and they pay their CEO $300,000/yr (plus stock) and they even started to automatically enroll their employees in a company matched 401K program in 2006. Participation in the pension program went from the teens to the mid-80's in a year. They do this at a cost.

If Costco can do all of this and still turn a profit then why can't Wal-Mart?

Wal Mart may be bad to their workers, but those who work full time at Wal Mart dont have to work there. And if that was the best job they could get, how would they be better off if Wal Mart were not around? Wal Marts part time wages are as good as any pizza place or grocery store would pay a part time employee. They provide cheap prices, so what is the problem?

thats quite true. They pay better than any small establishment. People are paid what theyre work is worth. If they dont want to work there, they are always free to leave

Why not..Good question, but likely because Unions demand fair treatment of their people instead of expliotation while US Big Business Hates that with a passion. Most companies will fold up the sandbox & go home with all the toys if that dirty word 'Union' is wispered. Wal Mart Canada is listed as one of the best companies in terms of employment. i guess we have better labour laws here to protect our workers. you should look into Ontario's Employment Standard Act - you may learn something.
