Great video, this is very weel done..I wanted to start exercising last year..and the only way I could do that, was by starting to do that, the moment that I tought about it..I just kept future me out of the picture ..and it worked :P
im looking up techniques to stop procrastinating when i got papers due in 9 hours. i found this very nice youtube clip... the presentation is nice... think i might replay it a couple of times... im staring at this comment for 5 minutes. oh look at the side clips.. theres another vid about procrastination.. im going to check that out next
The way things should be accorcding to someone else...just get lost with this crap!
The reason why people put things off is THEY DONT WANT TO DO THEM.
Perfectly natural and perfectly resonable, next we will call this an 'Affliction' and start sending school kids to a shrink to hand out the pills and s**tbrain advice. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Its more division, those who do as they are told promptly are 'good' and you get the picture!
From the book: //The Misconception: You can predict how well you would perform in any situation. The Truth: You are generally pretty bad at estimating your competence and the difficulty of complex tasks.// This book was fantastic!
Whenever I start to procrastinate, I don't. Every fiber of my being wants me to stop what I'm doing and do something pointless, but I force myself to do these things. I have to change the oil in my car? I'll do that now, I'll play Minecraft later. Need to do laundry? I'll do that now. I'll watch videos on youtube later. I want to learn how to play this song on guitar, I'll do that now, I'll play Call of Duty if I have the time. I try to procrastinate procrastinating, most of the time, it works.
@StraightEdgeHippie so try to procastinate, procastinating, interesting but what about the part where your body does what it WANTS instead of what it NEEDS that is hard for me like right now I need to finish an essay, but instead I watch a video on how to stop procastinating......but i'll try that
Just bought it, i look forward to reading, although i kind of feel i am being influenced into buying this, it really makes you question the motives of the author. Is he genuinely being sincere, or this this some elaborate plot to sell copies?
@LaughingVegetables LOl, I thought the same thing, wtf, I search procrastination and in the sidebar there's this unrelated video just to distract you but you know you'll click it because the curiosity is too strong and you can't resist it XD
How about instead of forcing myself to do things which I don't want to do and will make me unhappy, I do what I want to do and what I feel like doing... wouldn't that be best for my soul?
if you want to outsmart ?future you?, then "now you" has to make "future you" retarded. So start taking as many drugs as possible and kill all the brain cells you can.
This isn't all that accurate. People procrastinate for different reasons. For example, some perfectionists tend to procrastinate due to anxiety. Paralyzed and feeling unable to start from the fear of not being able to do whatever perfectly. Procrastination can be a way of self-handicapping - a way to protect one's self-esteem when the person doesn't live up to his/her own expectations. They can use the excuse: "Well I would've done better if it wasn't for procrastination."
Oh, I thought the trick to beat procrastination was to NOT think, "just do it", and then, with all the "obstacles" out of the way, procrastinate to the max!
This is sooo surreal; I browsed through this today at Barnes and Nobles today, read this very passage. The passage on the normalcy bias blew my mind, good read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested.
@moonsmilelucide The technique for the type of illustration in the video is called Kinetic Typography, I don't know the best programs to use to create your own though but if you do some research into Kinetic Typography you'll find your answers and some tutorials as well.
So the most amusing paradox of all of this is that I need to buy the book in order to figure out how to change how I think, but chances are I'm going to procrastinate reading the book, hence not changing the way I think and therefore getting nowhere at all.
Here's what this all seems to say to me: Can I trust future me to make the right decision?
Right now, I want to get some homework done. A five-minute break sounds fair. But will five-minutes-later me be willing to get back to work? Does it matter, if I choose not to trust him now?
Despite the fact that I'm technically procrastinating now from a paper, I realize that this might be more important because it will allow me to fight procrastination later.
I think I get it... so I should remind myself that in the future I'm really going to be wishing I had studied for that test instead of going to that club?
@ryandrums1001 Almost, you should think about the future you while in the club and how that will negatively impact your life because you will fail the test and think about that possibility. Which will allow you to make the positive choice of studying for the test in the present.
@bibimcmacky - Yeah, I am not sure I could read a book from someone who can't pronounce such an easy word ;-). He seems to pronounce other words fine. Definitely wouldn't listen to an audiobook version of this. Besides, I understand this book doesn't really explain how to fix your procrastination.
@YouAreNotSoSmart : sounded perfectly natural to me.... which I would RATHER listen to than some carefully crafted "neutral" speech that shifts the priority from the message to pleasing people that are missing the message anyway...
@YouAreNotSoSmart I'm from the south and that is not how want is said, at least in Oklahoma, Arkansas or Texas...it sounds like a movie version of someone from Alabama.
@bibimcmacky Yeah, I had to go back to 1:39 over and over again b/c I couldn't concentrate on the meaning of the video... only how he pronounced "want"...
@franklinjexsul I agree. The average person is not going to comprehend this. The way the author pieces his words together while trying to explain a concept is slightly disjointed and transitions poorly between thoughts. I won't be buying this book.
You can not coin the putting off of modern worries and superficial, transparent tasks as sheer childish negligence. Human motive is driven partly by purpose, one will only suffer if one can attach meaning to it, excluding the typical unjustified slave morality. Procrastination is often due to a lack of purpose to ones task. Novelty and pleasure, more importantly the primal ones at crucial.
When you make plans, you're usually Dr Spock. The only problem is when it's now and go to do the plan, you're Homer Simpson. Will this book help me battle my inner Homer Simpson? ohhmmm beer.
