  • show us the hardware! Are you controlling an actual complete master system? What are you using for an interface? How does it work?

  • 1:52

Also, that is called Pulse Square Wave mode.It increases the pulse width of the square wave.

  • 0:29 Pure proof why SMS is superior in sound (than NES)

  • How can I get a midi device from you? I'm desperate for SEGA sounds!

  • You forgot the best sound of all to come from that chip,

    where was the white noise?

  • @Adam060756 Oh hey.

I don't think that was a unique thing to the SN76489. The NES's sound chip could do the same thing, but with triangle wave as bass, making it way fatter than the SN76489.

  • @dissident93 The SN76489's white noise was soley used for the SEGA Master System's percussion drive, it wasn't like on Genesis/Mega Drive where the noise channel only made a hi-hat sound to accompany the DAC samples, the kick/snare and cymbals all had to come from the 4th PSG channel for Master System games and it's heard on just about every Master System game ever made. The only time the white noise sound wasn't heard was when the sawtooth wave was heard (since it shares that same 4th channel).

  • @Adam060756 Wasn't all the white noise in sawtooth waveform anyhoo? And yea, the NES was the same way, all percussion coming from the white noise channel.

  • @dissident93 I think the white noise tone generator and sawtooth wave are two totally different sounds made up of different statistics. The 4th channel seems to work as a sampler aswell which is why I think on Mega Drive it disables another channel whenever the hi-hat sound is heard, cause it's not noise. If you find out more about it then let me know I could be wrong but thats what I think.

In this video, we hear everything the PSG-SN76489 has to offer (except it's primary percussion noise).

  • @Adam060756 Well, all a waveform is, is the psychical characteristic of the sound itself. I THINK, that the white noise was in sawtooth form. And it doesn't disable another channel, it plays with white noise. You're thinking of the samples the YM2612 could play back, as they disabled channel six.

  • @dissident93 Im talking about PSG not FM. PSG-SN76489 sawtooth wave cannot be heard with PSG-SN76489 white noise, one must be absent for the other to be heard because they both share the same sound channel.

Remember Lemmings on SEGA Master System by Matt Furniss? You only ever hear the snare in between the sawtooth wave bass.

Also when the SN76489 plays back the hi-hat cymbal sound to accompany the DAC samples it disables another whole PSG channel which is why there is only 3 on Genesis.

  • @Adam060756 Yea, that's what I meant.

    And I see.

  • 0:22 sounds like "you lose" music

  • This chip is also known as the TMS9919 which is found in TI99/4 it's first application.

Clones such as the NCR 7496 where used in Tandy 1000s.

  • jajjaja that is the sound from a long time ago, my childhood

  • Is the ringmod a built in function the chip has? I know you can do that with the AY sound chips using harware volume envelopes, but i didnt think the SN76489 had anything like that.

  • @CoolDudeClem @CoolDudeClem Probably implemented using writes to the volume registers. The vibrato will be updates to the frequency registers.

  • great application for this system to make music.... 5/5

  • Actually, the YM2413 was part of the Sega Master System, not Mega Drive. The MD / GEN had a YM2612 + SN76489, giving it 10 channels of music :)

  • Love that bass @ the end, super fat... run that through some analog filters & Oh my...

  • Hahaha! It's funny, before I knew what a synthesizer was, i always assumed electronic music was made with videogame systems. Haha! it's like it's come full circle in a way. I loved Fantasy Zone II, Space Harrier, and Zillion when i was a child. That music will always be my friend. I'm excited for this.

  • Yeah - Fantasy Zone has a great soundtrack!

  • Cool

    Same midi as mine :)

    but mine is a 49

  • when will the midi cart be available?!

cmon man! your killing me here! :D

  • -]. damn, I wouldn't know how to do any of these .[-
