She IS head of state. She has to appoint the PM. Until sep 2011 it was her right to dissolve the parliament at any time and she can still veto a bill. No bill becomes law without royal assent. The Queen does usually never use her power, but it's still vested in the crown.
For a rare occasion of refusal see "Military Action Against Iraq (Parliamentary Approval) Bill" of '99. It sought to transfer the power to authorise military strikes against Iraq from the monarch to Parliament.
And merry old england is very good in avoiding european regulations. They are not part of the euro zone and fortunately not responsible for the desasters of said euro.
@solidysnake1 It goes back to the late 17th and 18th centuries where it was the fashion to wear such wigs. It remained a part of the judicial system as a tradition.
@solidysnake1 They're traditional and go back a long way. It is still true that judges and barristers in court in England have to wear horsehair wigs (though not that full-bottomed kind). I'm English and did my share of jury service in 2000. It was a hot summer and the judge gave permission for "wigs off" to stop all the lawyers getting too sweaty.
Wayn3h - The house of lords limit s the power of the house of commons, otherwise if a party had a huge majority they could literally do anything they wanted with little consideration of the consequences. The House of lords helps balance things out, all major democracies have a second chamber including USA, Canada, Australia etc.
The queen runs the army meaning we are protected from a PM ever turning the army against the people. We are a prosperous nation, dont change things for change's sake.
@cheekychappy333 so the monarchy hold the power of military, then how about the parliament, i thought they also hold the military?? or the police only, i see the balance of power, nice
@Thrice13 SILENCE COMMONER, YOU SHALL NOT SPEAK OF YOUR LEADERSHIP THIS WAY. FOR IT IS TREASON. Or er to something of that effect haha. People need to grow up, it sounds like opening night on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. OMG ITS LOARD FAULKNER OMGOFMGomom
looks like another round of scandals involving MP expenses has just begun! woo hoo for politicians on either side of the pond and around the world! Keep scamming your people!
@wayn3h I am by no means a royalist but the Royal Family and those 'poncy ceremonies' generate enormous income for the country. The Royal Family also promote the country abroad. The lesser members should be ditched but the others have an important role. The House of Lords is also of use. It is a balance to the House of Commons and has done good work stopping governments just pushing anything through.
she has to ride past that statue of Cromwell on her way in.
