Anyone, by chance, know the name of the guy standing behind Dee? She turns to look at him :34. He's on many episodes as extra, sometimes has a line or two but not credit, as far as I know.
I know one the sister and one of the brothers. Her daughter went to preschool with my son here in Oakland. Her brother Carl is an original member and keyboard player for Tony Toni Tone.
I used to looooooove the Givens Kids and in my neigborhood in Vallejo, we would act like we were them and sing "Bubblin' Brown Sugar". I can tell they were professionally trained with their vocals and choreography.
I remember when this aired not 20 years ago, more like 32 years ago. AND I REMEMBER it and have joked about it with my brother over the years. But the 8 year old me remembered the words wrong.... "Bubble Up Brown Sugar... a satisfying Harlem treat". ROFL...HAHAHA. I still do the ReRun at weddings!!!!!
I too have waited 20 years to find this! I used to sing this as a kid when I was happy and "wagging" my tail. I can't tell you how incredible this feeling is. Its quite different from what my mind morphed it into after all those years. I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe this will take some people back and have us to remember those were talked about and over came in order for us to have a better life..... Black people are the first to knock each other down and the last to take a stand....
This is awesome that this is on YT. I've been signing this song years since the first and only time I ever saw it, back when the show aired in the '70s. Everytime I use brown sugar, I think of this song and sing it. I just looked it up because I was just baking with it. I've been singing: "Bubbly brown sugar. Mix it with a happy beat. Bubbly brown sugar. Makes you wanna' dance your feet." Haha. It's great to see this again.
No shame in having favorite entertainers. We are all different, but why not just speak your like or dislike and let it go. There would be many more wealthy black entertainers, but they are scared to death that they will not be recieved and because of some former trouble in their lives. Please don't be a stumbling block. I hate rap, but I admire people who use their talent to make a living. Give people, people a thumbs up who wishes to share their talent. Someone will support them.
WOW! There are hard blogs about these kids singing - I guess because they aint singing about bitches better have my money - you idiots cant relate - also the girl singing lead - is a little girl and her look is of a little girl - who song classic jazz tunes - black folks lets open our minds and know that we all dont sang and look like Marry J and Lil Wayne
@Shiftyeyes516 I think some people get on here JUST to talk shit..fuckin lame asses prolly cant sing, dance or nothing only bills they got is a cell phone bill and prolly struggling to pay that! Hiding behind screen names talking down on these kids who I bet done more in that one little episode than these bastards have done in their lives! Better watch the end of "Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back" you ignorant mothafuckas!
Man, I used to hate this. "(a bubalin') Bubblin brown sugar" I was so embarrassed for them. Me and my friend were talking about this a few years ago and she hated it too lol but then we sang it a few times in a row.
I was singing this at work today outta nowhere........and was like it has to be on Youtube.and it was! I love it 1 of my favorite episodes.....tiff1luv
Man I still belong to there fan club. I use to rollerskate to them. They were the next Jackson 5. Dude you forgot a couple more of there songs. My favorite one was the follow up to Bubbling Brown Sugar was (Bubbling Brown Doo Doo) MaMa who took my pigsfeet? and Hamhock Disco. I can't wait to see them at the Fox Theatre in Detroit next month. Number one fan for over thirty years and running.
Givins Kids Live At The Fox Theatre Detroit They sing their greatest hits!!! Bubbling Brown Sugar The Pig Knuckle Shuffle Who took mammas puddin Rubber neckin and jive Who farted in the chilly? Remix Opening for the Givins Kids Biz Markie April 27, 2009
Didn't this song like win a Grammy and the kids who sang it were like the youngest Grammy Winners? I thought I heard that somewhere on a Trivia Game Show. I could be wrong. Loved this show and the singers. I do miss Rerun and Shirley. God Rest their souls. This is all blacks had on TV back then and shows like this, we think of it as bafoonary now, but back then this was all we had. Thank GOD we have come a long way, except for the Tyler Perry Bafoonary Shows with working class Blacks.
No I don't think so, James Brown and Michael Jackson will still be played and still have impact 20-30 years from now.
With that much time James Brown will have endured almost 100 years and Michael will have close 80 what rapper will ever be able to make that claim.
This is not a diss to rap but let's be real, singers endure while rap as cool as it is has a short life span. I can't imagine any rapper being 70 years old rapping BUT look at BB King, Al Green still selling out shows!!!!!
very little about the game. Even to freestyle it takes time and training; I know many of the rappers in the game and they hone their craft by putting in work. (Writing and practicing) Even Jay-Z is not undefeated in freestyle battles no rapper in the world can claim this. They have to develop their skill. The Givens Kids had talent and they used gospel influences in their vocal delivery, today that is missing.
Do you think you will be flowing any of today's rappers 20-30 years from now?
To Nevawrong, You need to get your facts straight. James Brown put rap on the map. No artists you mentioned will ever have that much impact on rap and the roots of the music ever!!! Jay-Z been in the game since the 80's and he paid his dues. I'll admit flows make a difference but it is what the artist can to to influence and become a legend that really makes a difference. You have a right to enjoy what your generation has achieved but to diss singer because they do not rap shows you know
MAYBE in "WRITING RYMES", anybody can do that, but i dont know if youre familia with "FREESTYLING", thats where a rapper says a ryhme right off the top of his head, he has nothin writin down, he just rhymes on the spot about that particular thing or someone thats in front of him. now that shit is hard as hell, and definately not everybody or anybody can do that shit, in my opinion, that shit is just as hard as singing. JAY-Z goes in the studio, & records multiple songs with no paper around, WOOW
LOL, as a kid I used to say "bubba-lay-ma-suga". This was my favorite episode as a kid! I love the rendition they did on the Gong Show later. I wonder what happened to them. (of course I am about the google it)
say, you don't have their Gong Show performance that took place later in this episode? the one with the medley thrown in with the one Givins kid growling.... "He's mean"
Been searching for this episode since it aired back in the 70's. Wow, just as good as I remembered it. That song is still stuck in my head even today! Great find thanks for posting!
thank god RAP MUSIC was invented, or i wouldve been a young black kid growin up doin this shit, i was born in 1971, so i grew up on RUN-DMC, and the WUTANG CLAN, i was lucky. i was a teenager in the 80's, and a young man in his 20's in the 90's, and those 2 decades is what i represent, R.I.P.-- BIGGIE & TUPAC
yeah, i was born in '71, too. but this music was cool for the time that it was done i still dig it today i like rap too but i think the '70s had the best music.parliament, ohio players, chaka khan,EWF,not to take anything away from rap, but cats back then played instruments. admit it,nevawrong the talent level has decreased since rap began(example sampling)!
NAH, you cant compare RAP to any other kind of genre of music, maybe RAP takes no instruments, but the simple HOT beats & the ryhmes put together in those songs is just wonderful music 2 my ears. & maybe the instrument side has decreased in talent, but the way some of these RAPPERS put together there words are PHENOMENAL. ask JAMES BROWN or MICHEAL JACKSON 2 say a RHYME in the style of a NAS, JAY-Z, BIGGIE, CANNIBUS, KRS, KANE, BIG-PUN, & many more, & i garentee you that THEY CANT DO IT.
Having an appreciation for a style doesn't mean that other artist can't do something it may just mean their efforts are more advantageous in another area. Anyone can learn to rap if they practice, not every rapper can sing because it is a skill that requires training in pitch, diction and breath control. Although rapping is more than rhyming with practice all of the aboved mentioned artist could be successful rapping to a fairly significant degree.
You have to be joking, right? Most of hte rhymes they come up with are the cheesiest things ever. Just taking random references that do not flow with the rest ofhte song. Actually not hard at all to do. Unless you are saying that Ryan Stiles and others on Whose Line Is It Anyway are great rappers.
Rhyming haters with Speed Racer does not take talent. ESPECAILLY beforethe crappy movie came out and no one in the genres target audience ever heard of Speed Racer before.
i feel U, but i'm from the old school, when the rap lyrics was more ARTICULATE, CREATIVE, TOUNGE TWISTING, & COMPLEX. from RAKIM, NAS, JAY-Z, BIG DADDY KANE, BIG PUN, AZ, CANIBUS, FREDDY FOX, BIG-L, LORD FINNESS, WUTANG, KRS-1, KOOL G.RAP, TUPAC, & BIGGIE, the way all those rappers put words together are incredible, i shore cant rap like that, & there isnt many people on the planet who can rap like that neither. now todays rappers are GARBAGE, anybody can rap like them, even u also buddy lol
