@Vampzoe The Doctor doesnt have any children. He specifically says that the crib is his from when he was a baby about 30 or so minutes into "A Good Man Goes to War".
@theballsack1492 No its not rivers name because on the confidential they spoke about The timelord writing being a red herring, and that actually the Doctor read The leef and realised she was holding the cot and ifgured it out, cause he's clever... thats from Steven Moffat's mouth..ish

p.s sorry for the 'spam' but there isnt many other ways to get it out there
i dont know if you were paying attention or not but the name on the doctor's cot was Melody Pond. The doctor realized who River Song was after reading it. So what you have is River Song's name in Galifreyan.
You mean the cot the doctor used to sleep in when he was a child? they carved rivers name into it billions of years before she was born by his parents?
@Jokerslove123 how do you know that the doctor didnt carve the name "melody pond" into the cot before he brought it out of the tardis? it would explain why she put his hand on it to show him who she was without blurting it out loud...
@mrMadHatterreviews When amy looked at "the doctor's name" and couldn't read it River told her it wouldn't translate and handed her the prayer leaf because it would. Clearly the Doctor read River's name on the cot.
@theballsack1492 The name on the cot was written in Gallifreyan for which the doctor wouldn't need a translation. He also said in that episode that he spoke every language( including baby) so he would be able to read the prayer leaf even if the Tardis hadn't translated it yet. It was thee prayer leaf.
@theballsack1492 river's name was on the prayer leaf that lorna gave amy. the writing on the side of the cot is probably the doctor's name in gallifreyan
Ok, folks, here's a thought... Bob, notes the character of "∂" from a 1975 Edition of the "The Making of Doctor Who". Well, that's lower case alpha. Gallifreyan history claims there were three initial Timelords who became responsible for the development of Time Travel, Rassilon, Omega and The Other. It's also rumored that The Doctor used to be The Other, and well, if you put "The Other" opposite of Omega, well, you have Alpha. Before it's over with, he will rebuild Gallifrey. Mark my words.
In the 1975 Second Edition of "The Making of Doctor Who", the Doctor's real name is given as "∂³∑x²"...which is probably just a crude translation that's closest to any kind of human-compatible concept.
Okay, that's really gorgeous. I am going to write something that's completely over the edge of the plate: I think all of this is real and happening in a different universe. Maybe not exactly like the show, but in some universe there's definitely a species similar to the Timelords, Daleks or the Silence. Just the thought of this makes me find the show even better, haha
the reason the doctor doesn't use his real name is two-fold:
a matured timelord takes a second name (the doctor, the master, the rani. Romana either did not take one or chooses to use her real name), and he has long wanted to distance himself from gallifrey's stifling politics and policy of having time travel but not using it
For what it's worth, in the audio Dr Who story "Slipback" it was said that the Dr's companion (in that case Peri) couldn't pronounce the Dr's real name; hence the "Doctor" title.
@chewie211171 I never head that but then I don't think I've ever listened to any of the audio books. My understanding is he doesn't use it because it is connected to something in his past that he's running from. Although there have been suggestions in some episodes that somehow he isn't allowed to use it. I don't remember them off hand except they were during Russel T Davies run as excutive producer. Moffatt seems to have abbadoned that line of thought though.
I kinda thought it was actually his sons name part because by the time he wiped out the time lords his son was to old for a cot so he probably had it and two he acted a little more fondly of it than any one would act of there own cot. but of there child's..
@jonathan4178 That is only on the cloth that Lorna Bucket gave to Amy, it was in the language of the Gamma forests which is different to writing on the cot which is Gallifreyan
@OwlCityFan26 There are several types of written Gallifreyan. This one ist called "Circular Gallifreyan". There ist also writing that looks like Greek letters and mathematic symbols.
@OwlCityFan26 Nah it wouldn't. :) Mathematics is the language of God, and Gallifreyan is mathematics of time. The doctor's name spelled out is his every goal, gift, flaw, tangents, beginning, middle, end, all at once. That's not his "name", that's a representation of his identity.
Kind of like how we can write a 20 page essay on how time turns everything to dust, youth grows old, rooms get messy, wages decline, foods rot, and empires crumble. Or we can write:
@OwlCityFan26 Forever is such a meaningless word when one is a Time Lord! Funny, he is a Time Lord and yet he can't change his own past! Does this mean he can't change his future (his future self's past?)
It creates a paradox when a future version of a person comes in contact with their present/past self, and that's for a normal human. it would be 110000000000000 times worse if the Doctor did that.
@Sigillalith Hmmm. You may need to have a little chat with Matt Smith about that one... (yes, I do recognize that this is not the actor's fault and that the incontinuity falls entirely on the writers, but still... it's easier to shame a person if you know their name.)
I just finished watching the entire series up to this point again, and that seems to be the general rule. In the Big Bang 2, both Amy and the Doctor come in contact with future versions of themselves, but the universe was already exploding at ever point in history, so the paradoxes were just lost. (I'm a huge nerd.)
if every aspect of the show was in exact unison all the time, the storylines would mesh together and it wouldn't be a very surprising show. It would become predictable like a sitcom.
@Sigillalith ummmmmm, that wasn't what i said. i was mentioning the fact that the doctor has come in contact with past selves a total of 8 times. 2 times in the three doctors, 4 times in the five doctors, once in the two doctors, and once in big bang. i never mentioned anything about unison. or sitcoms.
*facepalm* you just kinda jumped in. look at the comments I was making earlier. Yes, he does come in contact with his past ans future self, but the general rule is that when that happens it creats a paradox, however, It can't be the smae rule every single time, or else Dr. who would have barely any intersting storylines left, and it would become predictable like a sitcom. If you still don't get what I'm saying, then whatever. it's your own headache.
@TriMageRyan ok i get it, but english is not the only spoken language of earth , humanoids have over 80 languages but i dont think time lords have other languages than gallifreyan (mabey im rong) so i guess you cant say "humanoid language" because only half of us speak english. But if gallifreyan is the only language that time lords speak then you see where im going.
@UltraPatrik indeed time lords only speak gallifreyan as Gallifrey is the name of the planet , meaning that it's the global language for the whole planet , just like if we decided to all speak one language and call it earthyan or somethin'
@UltraPatrik well, to have hundreds of different languages on a single plaet in an intergalactic community would be difficult to handle so it's very likely that the planet just adopted one language, a bit like france. in the past, the different areas had different languages (or so i've heard) but now basically all of them speak french.

Maybe it is something like Oppenheimer referred to: "I have become death, destroyer of worlds."
Davros also states "I will name you" to which he names the Doctor "The Destroyer of Worlds!"
It could be the Doctor has always been running from his name, and what it forebodes.
