what a convincingly young and beautiful turandot this is. her singing from 2.08 to 2.21 is unmatched. perfect top 'C's at maximum volume,and subtle acting too. i saw eva marton as elektra at covent garden in london in about 1995 and it was the best acting i have ever seen, let alone singing. she is a thrilling performer.

At this point in the story, ice princess Turandot has lost the game. She is up against a man who solved all three of her riddles, and by her own word, is bound to marry him. Just the same, she pleads with the Emperor to release her from her vow. He tells her the vow is sacred, and that she must ante up. In pity, Calaf gives her till morning to learn his name. If she

does, she is free.
