This is one of the damnedest things to play that has ever been written. But it is one of those that is worth it when get to the point when you can play it. One of my favorite pieces for piano ever. When I can play this I will have arrived. I will have reached the ultimate point in my piano career.
Your opening repeated notes had me smiling but then it got a little slugish on the chords. If you can play the piece with the same snap as you have on your repeated notes this would be awesome.
Remember!!! technic represents the material side of art as a money represents the material side of life. by all means achieve a fine technic, but do not dream that you will be artistically happy with this alone...technic is a tool to bear in expressing his own spiritual individuality and THIS YOUNG PIANO MAN IS AMAZING!!!
A lot of composers were like that even if they started out as a prodigy on the instrument. They focus more on composing rather than keeping up their skills.
@shroomiedoll Well, when a pianist starts to focus on composing, they can't spend hours and hours practicing. Beethoven couldn't play some of his own works. They just need to know what can be done on the instrument.
It's difficult to beat Pascal Rogé's version. He's a frikkin genius.
But the fact that anybody can play this song baffles me. The ability to do this earns my immediate respect, regardless of how they compare to Pascal Rogé.
@pumpkinheadedmf Rogé's all right, but if you want to beat him, listen to Casadesus, Thibaudet, or even better and fiercer, Samson François. That's about the most powerful, diabolically accurate and splendidly grandiose and yet completely true to Ravel version of the Toccata I've ever heard (and also the two piano concertos).
i agree.. the pianist has clearly worked hard on the general shape of the fast sections, but the slower bits could be a bit more contrasted. this piece id f#ckin hard though so bravo
Yeah. I feel like the beginning was rushed too. I think it sounds much better when the pianist takes a little bit of time with the first two measures.
haha 8 very obvious errors but EXTREMELY good playing. the melody can be heard loud and clear throughout, especially the first few lines where most performers don't have the strength to execute the chords correctly.

i cant imagin what is going through the minds of the players who play this.. like if you mess up during a fast part, how do u come back in?

è un pezzo di estrema difficolta, interpretazione fantastica, quando ho provato a fare le prime battute mi è venuto lo spasma alle dita!

A few technical errors. Seemed like he had trouble keeping the tempo consistent, but it's Ravel. Friggin awesome.

Apparently... Debussy was extremely annoyed with him (probably jealous).

Loved the clarity, but wish the lighter section were just a little more dream-like

8 technical errors-that's REALLLY good for this piece, actually.
And you actually counted them.
Overall, this is a very good performance.
