@AkimboJoe Sorry Joe, but there is such a thing as too many fruit on the tree. As the fruit gets larger and heavier, the limbs can break. It is happening in my apples this year. In the case of apples, if there are too many fruit on the limbs, the trees will not have enough energy to put into forming flower buds for next year.
The will result in biennial bearing. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
Thanks! I would have never thought you could prune so heavily! I was so intimidated to tackle my 20' peach tree! We are in Phoenix, and the tree is loaded with fruit. Most gets eaten by birds because it's too big to cover with nets anymore :( Now I will prune this back when the tree is dormant, and hopefully reign back this beast - lol. Thanks for the info! (PS - can I chop the top off the tree so it isn't so tall?)
I get a lot of mixed information regarding the "right time" to prune peach trees. Old folks are fanatic about winter pruning only, but any books I read recomend early spring or just before the fall of the last leaves. You seem to be somewhere in between! Are you pruning after picking your fruit? Many thanks.
@Teorispa I recommend waiting as long as possible in colder climates (in Michigan April)
If you get a late freeze hopefully something (healthyflower buds) will be left, but if you prune early and you get a freeze, you are in trouble. Check with the Cooperative Extension Service in your area for more specific info.
@GLHeilig I'm outside the US, in Portugal. But I got the idea. We don't usually get hit by freeze, the worse thing I have to worry about is heavy rain. My peach trees are in full bloom and rain is expected by the end of the week. Here's hoping...
Thanks for the video. I have several 10 yr. old trees that needed pruning...badly! Your video gave me the info and confidence to go forth and start this daunting task...
Think I'm going to need a case of the Uncle Willey "fix all" when I get done :o)
Hi. Very instructive video. I have to so something similar to my Pear tree. One question, what is the brand of that tree wound sealer you show spraying on the cuts? Looks handy!
@tabosky Most pruning sealers are basically the same. I prefer the spray on kind because it is faster, but don't apply if it is windy or you will ruin your clothes.
"Too much fruit"? Excuse me? There's no such thing! ;-p

Great Video. My peach trees now are 2 story high. Next year I'll try to fix them.
