I was working in a record and tape store when this album came out. I noticed a sticker on the cover overwrap that quoted Phil Collins' recommendation. Based solely on that I bought what would become one of my top ten favorite albums of all time. Long live The Blue Nile!
Great song, great Voice. I miss Paul and the Blue Nile, what are they doing?..I will Never forget the 1st time I listened by chance to "Tinseltown in The Rain" and me and my friend fell in love with them (some of us also fell in love with each other) , and danced to that song, on a ferry boat taking' us from Napoli to Sardinia all night long...elio
headlights on the parade the parade is alexandra parade which is a famous street in glasgow the band were living in a flat in dennistoun when it was written true story i was living there at the time as well
There will always be 50000 people in every generation who will appreciate the Blue Nile. Never more, never less. Even so, they'll be enriched and carry these songs for life. I really can imagine some dystopian future where some young person will play this and imagine these "golden days of yore" as they lament a love lost. Don't worry kid, you weren't born in the wrong time. There are others like you. (my youtube time capsule for the Blue Nile)
An Afro-american male here to prove that music is the most awesome common denominator . I too, was 'laid to rest' the first time I stumbled upon the"Hats" C-D in 1989 .For years I grew tired of telling others about the Music who had never heard of Blue Nile, now am glad to see (Thanks to YOUTUBE) that there are others that this music shakes up to their very core.
@snikwills no there from glasgow in scotland. they are very obscure but whenver i play there tunes people are always blown away by their music and ask who they are and wonder how they have never heard of them before.
Class is permanent it doesn,t often mean commerical sucess case in point the blue nile what a beautiful voice and a great band, after 24 years i dont think they are going to be corrupted at this stage no chance ive never seen them live but if the come back to ireland by hell or high water im going maybe by water it would be a lot less hassle.
Agree with Chopboy and so many others. Such an underrated band. Hats! and Walk across the rooftops- both incredible albums. I used to go to bed at night listening to this! This mix is slightly different, but good!
An outstanding song from an outstanding band..Lucky enough to have seen them live (twice)..Think that any one of their songs would still do well with some radio airplay ...They just dont get any....Wish i could change that..
I have loved this band since their first album in the 80's but have never seen them live (I live in Australia)....seeing their performances on the Jools Holland show via youTube is a real treat. These are great songs and combined with brilliant arrangements and very distinctive vocals deliver an emotive musical experience that never wanes - after all these years...wow!
Early morning in the uk 7:35 had a late night. Found this as i was thinking about my first love. shame it never worked out but this tune really hits it on the head hey. Still see her when i close my eyes. We can all dream hey !
Thanks blue nile !

I love this song; I can't get enough of it. And yes, his voice is transcendent--it takes you to another place. But this business of Hats being such a great album...not so much. I bought it online after reading reviews like that and was disappointed. I like this song and"Downtown Lights" on it and that's about it.
Ive seen this band twice, had lunch with Paul Buchanon, bought everything they have realesed. my daughter was weened on this music !!! Just the best ever band, that touches your soul. Ever my car number plates read "headlights on the Parade" This album is an all time classic. Hats of to you guys!!
MARK BUCHANAN I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're a true SOUL MAN.
Your voice is timeless, loving, healing... God shines through in it - thank you!!!!! Oh, and of course you're yummy and sexy too but that goes without saying 8))
OMG...(how un-80's like of me)...I agree with all of your thoughts....this album has only wonderful memories attached.....great soulful album. Love every measure of every song!
Ach the good old days in Scotland when we got the Blue Nile, the Cocteaus, Simple Minds, Orange Juice,Paul Haig, Fire Engines and many more, all to our selves!
I am almost evangelical about this band and feel the need to spread the word whenever I meet someone who is a genune music lover...........they're just too fab for words!
Most under rated band of their time - absolute genius & like others have said, every time I hear any of their tracks I'm swept away with a wave of nostalgia & immediately taken back to those heady days. Blue Nile <3
I get choked up just hearing this. Remember how listening to this as a kid set you apart from all the other loud and spotty youth? You felt... deeper, more sophisticated, sadder than anyone else.
Such a great song, they are without doubt the most underatted band ever.Ive loved them for 20 years and most of my friends have never heard of them. And if i play it they just turn up thier noses beacause they have had no publicity and zero airplay.I could rant all night,i really could
Such a wonderfully haunting voice! I remember traveling to Scotland and bringing this back to the US in vinyl, my friends looked at me a little crazy. You either get it or you don't. Great band from Scotland!

well what can i say the music is beautiful buchanans voice is so intense noone in these days can wright tunes like this anymore and even if they did it would be beyond the average beyonce listenning public
I remember interviews with PB when High came out in which he was asked if it was gonna take another 8 years for the next album. And Mr Buchanan replied in a way that said, "Don't silly - 8 years again, we've learnt out lesson."
Just a brilliant album, cant belive it sold so little. But they know they are good and they know thier fan base is genuine. If ever a band had nothing to prove it would be Blue Nile.
Hats is easiy a top 5 album of all time. I don't care if it sold less than 50,000 copies. This blows away almost anything produced in the 20th century.
My fav. album will always be A Walk Across The Rooftops. But Hats brings tears to my eyes. Something that AWATR cannot do. Hats is so rich and full of gorgeous sound that its almost impossible to not get chills when listening to it. In general, if you do not listen to this band, HOP FUCKING TO IT.
Love this song! I pop my little pink "Hats" album in all the time while I'm driving and listen to it. It's addictive. (Not crazy about the video though.)
in difficult times when it can hard especially in these times of recession the one thing that can pull us through is love it wil always survive no matter what adversity we will face.
Listened to this album over and over with my 1st love. The girl is a distant memory now but i still love the album. Its just timeless, a masterpiece. thanks so much for posting
i will never understand why & how this brilliant band, excellent singer & musicians never made it. its heartbreaking. i love them so damn much since i 1st heard tinseltown on radio clyde years & years ago. just cant believe how underrated this band are. id do anything 2 c them live, ifs its the last thing il every do in life will b 2 c these guys live. iv even got my 10yrs son in2 them, he loves them.x
I think they 'made it'.... I would never want them to really 'make it'... some of the best bands get destroyed that way... Trust me, they have a huge fanbase... just the subtle sort..
Chikito, well said! The Blue Nile are a precious gem to be kept with care. Such beautiful songs and so much emotion in Paul's voice. Greetings from a long-time Spanish fan in Madrid
Paul is a regular customer in the pizza/coffee shop I work in,he gave me 2 ticks to his opening night in Glasgow and I took Heather as our 2nd date, that night i think we both fell in love :)
If you want to be thrilled by the voice of the mature Paul Buchanan check out the vid of Garden of Love by Aqualung- he sings the second half of the song and his voice is even more chilling and wise now that he is older!
27 years on from the first time I ever heard them play in Glasgow, no band has ever written about the emotion of man better in song than these 3 guys called the Blue Nile. Utterly superb to say the least.
i believe it's referencing the impending cylon threat from deep space (as per the news stories on recent discoveries that the "battlestar" series was not entirely fiction....man the UN and NASA screwed us on announcing this so late). Obvious references to robotic beings who mean us harm in this video....although the nods to Marilyn Monroe/Joe Dimaggio don't totally add up. Yet they're there as well. Prophetic stuff from a super band, however.
The Blue Nile have always moved me in a way that few other bands have ever done...their music always brings so many memories and emotions to mind - afternoons spent drinking in seafront bars...being hopelessly in love ... walking along the street in the pouring rain...watching the english countryside rolling past from the window of a train....thank you for the music!
i totally agree with you...their music takes me right back to good times maybe never to be repeated.people who were so special at that time who i do not see now but will always be a part of me.
I got this cd back in the winter of 1990 and to this day I consider it to be one of my top 5 albums ever made. Every song on "Hats" paints an emotional landscape in your soul.

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Scotland 9 to 11 July but the tickets are all sold out.
Saw Paul Buchanan in 2006 in Glasgow, best concert I've ever been to

We caught the show last night (July 10th) and it was just the most wonderful place to be.
Paul Buchanan's voice was made for melancholic songs. And what a band!
Didn't think much of the support though - fairly ordinary. Hope you enjoy the gig :)

Really enjoyed it and well worth the wait. From an Midnight Train, Easter Parade and Family Life where truely haunting
Glad you enjoyed concert see you at the next one

There are tickets available for the show in London on 13.07.08. I can't make it myself...but what a band. The best out there.

what exactly is this video about, can anyone explain please
zealously10 3 years ago
i believe it's referencing the impending cylon threat from deep space (as per the news stories on recent discoveries that the "battlestar" series was not entirely fiction....man the UN and NASA screwed us on announcing this so late).

That was lovely, thank you for sharing such thoughts..

i totally agree with you...their music takes me right back to good times maybe never to be repeated.people who were so special at that time who i do not see now but will always be a part of me.

So, so true. I agree with everything you've said. But pl add the Scottish landscape in autumn, when its colours makes you most melancholy.

I got this cd back in the winter of 1990 and to this day I consider it to be one of my top 5 albums ever made. Every song on "Hats" paints an emotional landscape in your soul.
