WOW, these people really are stupid. It is obvious to anyone with half a brain cell that he was being facetious when he said obscure. Hell, I could smell the sarcasm from here. But then again, I suppose my expecting any shred of intelligence from youtubers is almost as sad as these losers are showing themselves to be. I'll never make that misjudgement again.
@aionzeta Actually, you're right. I hadn't thought of that! It's been around since 1963, and Star Wars first came out in.... what, 1977? And then Star Trek was 1966. So Doctor Who does beat them both! There's absolutely NO way that's obscure.
@Draconicqueen He means obscure in the sense that it's a show that has more of a cult following than one that kicks the Nielsen rating's butt. Back in the day, when I'd ask people if they watched Doctor Who, they'd either say "Doctor what?" or laugh at the thought of it. That doesn't mean it wasn't a great show. In fact, that made it even more special. Longevity doesn't negate obscurity. Ask 50 random people today to summarize any Troughton/Pertwee episode and you'll see Auton faces.
wow. I actually laughed. And I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who. From the way he's speaking, I think he knows that it's actually really popular, hence playing off of 'obscure'
It's funny to me how people are overreacting to his comment, which was intended to be sarcastic. If you were familiar with his work, then you'd see that he has a very dry sense of humour. And to the people asking for his death; grow up, it's a TV programme.
Hey, Mr. Wilson (how's THAT for an obscure reference?) Doctor Who, 1963 YOU, 1971. It was here before you, it'll be here after you're a fry cook in a diner in Texas hoping someone recognizes you from that question in the Trivial Pursuit Pointless Edition.
Wow... you guys. He was being sarcastic. Everyone and their dog has heard of Doctor Who. Hence the sarcasm. o_O ...why do I even need to point this out?
What's funny is that it's ok that this video has dislikes...because they're saying they dislike that he's dissing it! And the ones who liked it are saying they liked that the user called the dude out. You know who's obscure? You're obscure Luke Wilson! (at least to me...probably the only one who doesn't know him XD )
Obscure???? I've been a fan since I was 2 years old and I'm 100% American I actually didn't know who Luke Wilson was until I saw this video (Although I think I might have seen him in something, but not sure) In my opinion is way more obscure then Doctor Who LOL.
Well, since Dr Who is probably THE science fiction show there, and is very popular in most other countries as well including the US, i would say "obscure" is a very bad choice of words. Kinda like saying Star Trek is obscure in the USA
@FamilyOfMan1975 I've done a lot of traveling and I've been around long enough myself New York, L.A., And a handful of other big cites, sure A lot of them have heard of the show. Go to middle America, or the outskirts of big towns ad they'll have no idea who you're talking about.
@engrey Sorry to disappoint you but I live in middle America. Plus, I met people from all over when I was in the military and even though I didn't watch the show back then everybody I knew talked about it.
You're right, though. It's all a matter of perspective - who you know, where you live. I don't hate Luke Wilson for dissing the show. I feel sorry for him for showing his ignorance on national television.
@FamilyOfMan1975 I knew/know tons of people who didn't/don't know Doctor Who. I loved the classic series and still do. Still, there were only a handful of people at my school back in the day who watched it enough to have conversations about it. The new show's a totally different bag and has legions of female fans. The old show was loved mostly by proud male dorks. I know. I was one of them! Blakes 7, Veronica Mars, too, are great "obscure" shows meaning they have devoted cult followings!
I don't know if he knows there's a current Doctor Who series. I think it would be totally correct to call classic Doctor Who obscure in America. It's awesome (the classic series), but hardly one that most people would be watching nowadays. Kids today don't like old stuff and think things from 2004 are ancient. The new show's not really obscure, but it's also not one you'd think tons of girls are watching. Big deal if he calls it obscure when comparing it to the biggest golf tournament.
OBSCURE??!???!?????!?????!????!???? WTF LUKE WILSON!! i'm pretty sure every single british child in the last 40 years has watched doctor who at least once...
This Owens brother? Dr Who admittedly would be considered obscure in the US and thats probably the angle he's coming from but then most UK things would be c onsidered obscure in the US so that doesnt mean alot, but its certainly anything but obscure in the UK
Wait a minute. Obscure is good, when Hollywood gets its hands on things, essentially they become non-obscure and souless; like they plan on doing with Akira. That's when they become truly mainstream and that's when I switch off. Now I don't think for a minute that Wilson was trying to say Dr Who is cool, but he is American therefore Dr Who may be obscure over there, I don't know. But what I do know is that over here in the UK, American shows like "Branded" and "Manimal", are obscure.
@Paul07791 Manimal was obscure in America, too. It was only on for 8 episodes, so I'm pretty sure that Doctor Who actually has a larger US audience than that show ever did.
Wasn't an insult at all, but we do know that he has extremely bad taste if he's never properly heard of Doctor Who. And for the record, I can't name a single thing Luke Wilson was in. Seriously, what was the last movie he starred in? I tend to not watch anything with less than a three star rating on Netflix.
I reckon he was trying to be cool by dissing something he clearly had no real clue about, which happens and is quite understandable. But as a fan of the Doctor I can't help asking: Luke who?
Doctor Who has run for over 40 years with a bigger fan base than Star Trek, it has even sold in more countries. Even in Arabia. It is the longest running sci-fi series in history...beat that America! K9 zap the crap out of that actor I have only seen once in some middle age crisis film.
He is so wrong!! I'm from the U.S. And I absolutely LOVE Doctor Who! Has he ever even watched the show?! It's fudging amazing! My favorite doctor is David Tennant. I don't know what's wrong with this..."Luke Wilson". I've never even heard of him before.
obscure? it's been on since, what, the 50s? (i can never remember if it's 50s or 60s...) I love how some people think because they're not into or don't know about something its 'obscure.'
So there is this obscure actor named Luke Wilson. And he's dissing the most dangerous man in time. The Doctor wouldn't care, so why should we? He takes crap all the time.
I'm sorry, Mr. Wilson, but Doctor Who is most definitely NOT and obscure science fiction show! Just take a trip across the pond, or just ask around here...there are Whovians (or Who-fans) all around you...
He looks like a bloated corpse freshly fished from a pond. Luke Wilson is just an average American... completely unaware of worldwide culture. Doctor Who is an abscure show. Football (soccer) is an obscure sport. Darwin's theory is an obscure idea. The greeks had obscure literature. Just kidding... I know the average American is smarter than Luke Wilson.
Like the vid - excellent little clip of this bloke's comment - then you send the daleks in! :)
As insults go, pretty tame. Obscure: not prominent or famous - he's dead wrong there. It's obscure to him because he has little personal awareness of it or connection to it..It's more of a reflection of his ignorance, because, as we know, it has a massive following (and not just in the UK).
Luke Wilson, like most Americans, are clueless as to what the rest of the planet enjoys watching. Anyone who has spent time in Britain knows that D.W. is an institution on par with Star Wars.
He's not dissing it, it IS obscure. It's brilliant, it's one of a kind. I'm not going to boycott Luke Wilson because of this, because I don't think he was trying to be insulting.
im a doctor who fan too n he wasn't dissing doctor who he was just saying wat it is, cos it IS an obscure science fiction show, how is a show about a 907 alien who can change his body whenever hes fataly wounded n flies around in a time machine that looks like a police box not obscure, obscures not a bad thing it just means its different n it is different its fukin amaazing, get over it mate
He was watching the show and knows what the masters are, forgive me if i'm wrong but you don't tend to do that unless you enjoy the show and ergo are a fan of it...as for the obscure comment; he's talking the the audience for the David Letterman show...to the American general public the show is obscure. the pause when he says "Great Britain" is because he's sidetracking from his original story so had to think for a second. I don't even like him yet there was nothing offencive here.
I think Luke Wilson shoul his fan base to The Doctor's. He will find he can count his fans on one hand, but would need every hand in the universe to just begin counting THE GREAT DOCTOR WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't take it personally. The Relaunch event was only on what amounts to, in terms of US viewership, a third tier cable channel, not even available everywhere, so it still hasn't quite pushed through to mass consciousness as more than a sci-fi show with only niche appeal. To capture the demo they need (former "Lost" fans, etc.), I'd really like to see BBC America given reign and money to do more savvy street-level [adult swim] style guerrilla marketing, esp. re: drama and comedy elements.
@thetopsauce It is not the comment of "obscure" that insults the fans, but the way he said it, as if the girl watching Doctor Who and the show itself is unimportant and less interesting than himself watching the Masters. It just makes him sound like a pompous ass-hole. Yes not many people in the US watches Doctor Who, but it is an iconic series in Britain and the longest running Sci-Fi series in the world, it deserves more respect than being called simply "obscure"
It's weird how things change from one country to another. Doctor Who is so popular in Britain (and rightly so) but if you ask the average American (statistically average, I mean) if they've heard of the show they more than likely have no idea what you're talking about.
Probelm is that if anyone went up to Luke Wilson and was like "EXTERMINATE!!!" It would sound super lame and nerdy to anyone not obsessed with Doctor Who. It's like the Doctor Who reference in Sydney White - to anyone BUT a Doctor Who fan, the guy who makes the reference becomes instantly pitiful.
To preface this: I love Doctor Who. It's undoubtably my favorite show of all time. So, please, don't think that I'm hating on the show, but it pretty much is an obscure science fiction show from Great Britain. I mean, how else do you describe something like Doctor Who to a non-viewer?(Besides the most super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot thing to hit TV, but really) I think it's stupid that he kicked someone out to watch his own show, but hating on how he described it doesn't entirely make sense to me.
@BarayasTheSpider I'm not sure how I feel about Luke Wilson in this interview, but I must agree with you in saying that Doctor Who is "the most super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot thing to hit TV." Hahaha, Totally Awesome ;D
@BarayasTheSpider I didn't care him calling it obscure because it is obscure in the US, but I hate the attitude he put on as if a girl wanting to watch Doctor Who is less important than himself watching the Masters, it just makes him sound so arrogant and pompous. So what if DW is obscure, if a girl wants to watch it, why should she have to put up Wilson's judgement and attitude.
@BetaArtemis I don't think that you read my comment. I said I don't see what's wrong with him calling the show that and said "I think it's stupid that he kicked someone out to watch his own show, but hating on how he described it doesn't entirely make sense to me." So please stop misconstruing my words.
Doctor who is the greatest. A show kids and their grandparents can watch together. just because its not american its obscure. better than any of their crap where any thing to do with science fiction has the word 'star' in its title!
Maybe he's jealous because Guiness World Records recognized this "obscure" show as the most successful science fiction show of all time, but won't even consider him for worst B-grade actor in a stupid phone commercial.
Dont even know or care who this guy is, just know that he talks shit n no im not a "die hard dr who fan", i just know a decent, legendary show when i see one. This guy is a non entity , not even worthy of talkin about dr who
lets face it, it's shows like doctor who that prove britain sucks. thats why i never say im brittish, but scottish. luke wilson's right, it is obscure. and boring. and repetitive. but you could add some great music to it and make it way better!
@cheerio1993 Are you kidding me? DW has SO much wonderful music in it! Search for Doctor Who by BBC National Orchestra and be less ignorant ;)
And, being Polish, I can say I'm quite impartial in judging whether Britain sucks, and, if we are to judge by its shows - well, Doctor Who, Monty Python's Flying Circus... I LOVE those things, and I LOVE the britishness in them. That's what makes them unique and fascinating and wonderful.
how on earth can it be obscure? its the longest running show to date, not to mention the huge ass fan base that goes along with it.... i dont america coming up with anything else.....
Oh, yeah! Luke Wilson. Did not know who he was at first, then I realized he is the more obscure of the the two Wilson Brothers, Owen being the better known one.
From the tittle I thought he completely ripped on Dr Who but that wasn't too bad! To be honest, before it kicked off in America Doctor Who was only known in the UK. I'm from Belgium and I'd never heard of it before the new series ... and now I'm addicted lol
...the only reason things are obscure is because people are SPOON FED entertainment and they don't take the time to sort through the trash (I can't remember the name of one Luke Wilson movie off the top of my head) to find the good stuff because their HEADS are shoved neatly into their BOTTOMS!!!!
Excuse me - obscure? It's more widespread now around the world than it ever has been and is made by a crew of people and writers that Luke Wilson would BEG to work with, including the acting talents of those no names Timothy Dalton, Simon Pegg, Alex Kingston, Billie Piper, Catherine Tate...
How is he dissing Doctor Who? Don't get me wrong- I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, but saying it's obscure is TRUE, at least in the United States. I have many friends that barely know what it is at all.
And all this time i liked Luke Wilson..NOBODY DISSES DOCTOR WHO....unless their making fun of 4's scarf being too long or 5's celery ..I Shall Never Forigive him
I'm from the US and have been a fan of Doctor Who since 1984. I'm sorry to disappoint you guys but in most of the country Doctor Who is still unknown to many people. And before the new series started in 2005 it was even MORE obscure. Obscure doesn't mean bad, just unusual or rare (like a good wine), so don't get so worked up. At least it was namechecked on a popular national TV show in the US, which (other than the pirate incident in Chicago back in the 80s) hasn't really happened before.
can't believe this Hollywood B lister disses my favourite Timelord. Maybe he should check this week's telly ratings. I guess, us Brits would rather watch the Doctor than any of Luke's films. So what films has this guy been in? only remember one with his brother Owen. Luke is the obscure one. The Doctor gets more mentions in tv shows:CSI NY, Big Bang Theory in the same breath as Star Trek , another obsure tv show I guess. Luke and Owen were jocks remember. so anything other than sport is obscure
luke? who is that? is he the brother of that twit owen? exterminate? nah to easy, just force him to watch his own work, you could not get any nastier than that, show some one how shit they really are, he wouldn't last a day
@ViciousGuitarist Some of the comments on here are kind of silly. I'm a fan of the show and I was just glad it was mentioned on national TV. Obscure isn't exactly a terrible insult, and the truth is that it is still pretty obscure in the United States. I don't have a problem with that.
luke wilson i did not know who you were till i googled you don't ever diss Doctor who you fucking cock sucking shit eater and your country sucks balls you inport everything you use or you make a shitty remake like you did to our office you cunt
Oh Hell No! diss Doctor Who and there will be troble if i ever see that guy hes in troble!

Doctor Who is an obscure show from Great Britain the same way Lost is an obscure show from the US. COME ON WILSON!
geniusABBY 1 year ago 2
Like the vid - excellent little clip of this bloke's comment - then you send the daleks in! :)
As insults go, pretty tame. Obscure: not prominent or famous - he's dead wrong there. It's obscure to him because he has little personal awareness of it or connection to it..It's more of a reflection of his ignorance, because, as we know, it has a massive following (and not just in the UK).
Dunno who Luke Wilson is, btw.
imaof4 1 year ago
Luke Wilson, like most Americans, are clueless as to what the rest of the planet enjoys watching. Anyone who has spent time in Britain knows that D.W. is an institution on par with Star Wars.
I'm not angry with Luke Wilson...I just pity him.

TheStanthony8 1 year ago
Don't take it personally. The Relaunch event was only on what amounts to, in terms of US viewership, a third tier cable channel, not even available everywhere, so it still hasn't quite pushed through to mass consciousness as more than a sci-fi show with only niche appeal. To capture the demo they need (former "Lost" fans, etc.), I'd really like to see BBC America given reign and money to do more savvy street-level [adult swim] style guerrilla marketing, esp. re: drama and comedy elements.

@violetcloud and furthermore if you say his name you're likely to confuse him with his brother. he shouldn't be calling anything obscure.
violetcloud 1 year ago
I don't really see how he's dissing the show. In the United States it IS obscure.
thetopsauce 1 year ago
@thetopsauce It is not the comment of "obscure" that insults the fans, but the way he said it, as if the girl watching Doctor Who and the show itself is unimportant and less interesting than himself watching the Masters. It just makes him sound like a pompous ass-hole. Yes not many people in the US watches Doctor Who, but it is an iconic series in Britain and the longest running Sci-Fi series in the world, it deserves more respect than being called simply "obscure"
BetaArtemis 1 year ago 2
It's weird how things change from one country to another. Doctor Who is so popular in Britain (and rightly so) but if you ask the average American (statistically average, I mean) if they've heard of the show they more than likely have no idea what you're talking about.

Probelm is that if anyone went up to Luke Wilson and was like "EXTERMINATE!!!" It would sound super lame and nerdy to anyone not obsessed with Doctor Who. It's like the Doctor Who reference in Sydney White - to anyone BUT a Doctor Who fan, the guy who makes the reference becomes instantly pitiful.

*tries to think of anything Luke Wilson has done* ... playing second fiddle to Martin Lawrence in Blue Streak?
... Yeah, that's it. His entire career. A third-rate actor playing second fiddle to a fourth-rate comedian.

BarayasTheSpider 1 year ago
@BarayasTheSpider I'm not sure how I feel about Luke Wilson in this interview, but I must agree with you in saying that Doctor Who is "the most super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot thing to hit TV." Hahaha, Totally Awesome ;D
4dancesinglovelive4 1 year ago
@BarayasTheSpider I didn't care him calling it obscure because it is obscure in the US, but I hate the attitude he put on as if a girl wanting to watch Doctor Who is less important than himself watching the Masters, it just makes him sound so arrogant and pompous. So what if DW is obscure, if a girl wants to watch it, why should she have to put up Wilson's judgement and attitude.
BetaArtemis 1 year ago 4
@BetaArtemis I don't think that you read my comment. I said I don't see what's wrong with him calling the show that and said "I think it's stupid that he kicked someone out to watch his own show, but hating on how he described it doesn't entirely make sense to me." So please stop misconstruing my words.

lets face it, it's shows like doctor who that prove britain sucks. thats why i never say im brittish, but scottish. luke wilson's right, it is obscure. and boring. and repetitive. but you could add some great music to it and make it way better!
cheerio1993 1 year ago
@cheerio1993 Are you kidding me? DW has SO much wonderful music in it! Search for Doctor Who by BBC National Orchestra and be less ignorant ;)
And, being Polish, I can say I'm quite impartial in judging whether Britain sucks, and, if we are to judge by its shows - well, Doctor Who, Monty Python's Flying Circus... I LOVE those things, and I LOVE the britishness in them. That's what makes them unique and fascinating and wonderful.

honeyjv 1 year ago
...the only reason things are obscure is because people are SPOON FED entertainment and they don't take the time to sort through the trash (I can't remember the name of one Luke Wilson movie off the top of my head) to find the good stuff because their HEADS are shoved neatly into their BOTTOMS!!!!
Zorniod 1 year ago
Excuse me - obscure? It's more widespread now around the world than it ever has been and is made by a crew of people and writers that Luke Wilson would BEG to work with, including the acting talents of those no names Timothy Dalton, Simon Pegg, Alex Kingston, Billie Piper, Catherine Tate...

MKTrny 1 year ago
I'm from the US and have been a fan of Doctor Who since 1984. I'm sorry to disappoint you guys but in most of the country Doctor Who is still unknown to many people. And before the new series started in 2005 it was even MORE obscure. Obscure doesn't mean bad, just unusual or rare (like a good wine), so don't get so worked up. At least it was namechecked on a popular national TV show in the US, which (other than the pirate incident in Chicago back in the 80s) hasn't really happened before.
icemachine79 1 year ago
OBSCURE??
what a douche.
marykeith47 1 year ago
Why did he say that? He could have just said she was watching television, instead he had to name drop.
I'd get all worked up except Luke Wilson is too obscure too bother.
limonade09 1 year ago
can't believe this Hollywood B lister disses my favourite Timelord.
