Beautiful song. So many try to read too much into it. It's simply a song of someone longing for the woman he loved who died. Nothing more. A normal good expression of things in life we experience. We've all lost someone close to us.
The Oldies station recently had a "kitsch" hour in which they played corny songs. And they tried to include this. How dare they? This ain't The Night Chicago Died! It's a beautiful, haunting, Native American legend. With a great chorus. Why are people so dumb?!
@peterzang Well, in our current jaded, cynical age, this song seems too poetic, too romantic and tragic. There's little appreciation for the kind of story-telling poetic craftsmanship and multi-layered meanings that went into songwriting in the sixties and seventies.
Don't fault them entirely, they can hardly be expected to appreciate what they've never had the chance to be exposed to, like those of us who grew up with this music.
Finally the best rendition of the original classic song! All the others are recorded too loudly. This one is perfect! Thanks so much! The vidoe is good too. Now on my favs!
Awesome pics and transition from one to another, not to mention panning across them giving them more scope. I would love to learn how to do that, thanks very much.
I've got a black 1970 Mustang I've owned since 1977. I've been asked many times over the years if I'd given it a nickname to which I'd always say "No - it's a horse with no name" alluding to the song by America. So many I've loved have travelled in it with me - some now passed from this life. It's only taken a quarter a century, & as a songwriter the answer was always so close I couldn't see it - but this week I finally decided to name it Wildfire - my ghost horse and I on lifes road...
Man, it's amazing what you remember. I was only a little kid when this song came out but I still remember it. I had no idea who sang the song? I remembered the song title.
In the good days, me and my mom would drive to pick things up. And in the winter, she would play this song in the car. I never understood it until now. My mom was a good mom. My dad would abuse her. And shes now on crack. And shes a completely different person. I am now living with my grandma. I was 7 when that happend. Im 15 now. I will never forget this song. Or the way she used to be. This song is always going to be special to me.

just as there is something for everybody, a poem in each genre of music, there, too, is a genre in generation, so to speak... but how each person marches with time is, of course, that person's own journey.
Makes me think of New Mexico's Taos-Angel Fire- Rio Costillo ski areas--scenery so beautiful and...kind of spooky, like this song . The high desert is unbelievably gorgeous. This song epitomizes it.
This song was my favorite back in 1975. I still love it. It makes me think of my Dad and Brother who both passed away a while ago. They also liked this song. We would drive to work together and it would come on the radio several times to and from work. Good memories and a great song. The piano intro and ending is just magical. The song makes me cry.
I love this song, especially because I know a lady, she suffers from cerebral palsy, and she has many horses, and last winter, on Christmas eve, when there was over a foot of snow, she had to have him put down. This song give me chills, and brings tears to m eyes every time I hear it.
What are ya retarded?? Have you no soul? This song is simply amazing on so many levels. Great job on the video too. There's comfort food and what I like to refer to as "comfort music" and this song is a perfect example of that.

My sister her friend and I use to sing this song word for word, all three in our front porch swing when it rained. We're all grown up now. I long for the innocence of those simple days. Yeah this is the original and the one that I connect with. It makes me think of my sister Glenda whom I lost last Dec. Part of my heart went with her but songs like this help me reconnect with her in some way. Thanks for posting this gem.
This song is my favorite since I am a teenage, this version is full album version, I believe. I love the whole song especially his "hook" W....ild.....F....ire wow ! R.Siirwong / Thailand
Liked this song as a child when it was released in "75, but didn't quite "appreciate" it. Now as an adult, I LOVE it. It's lyrical/melodic/rhythmic MAGIC.. a superb songwriting effort. In the 60's/70's, the country/folk style was part of "big tent" music - REAL popular music - something the music industry killed long ago. Now, country/folk pop will NEVER be mainstream again...Sad...Sometimes it hurts to know you cant' "GO BACK". So many things were WAY better back then.
@tiptoetonight Wow I could'nt agree with you more. Look at John Denver, probably one of popular/folk music's most prolific writers. At the CMA awards the announcer burnt John's winning envelope live on stage. Hows that for big tent mentality. No, the Clear Channel's of this world have made it impossible to go back, and country, though mainstreamed, just aint what it used to be. It's all the same crap, its American Idol with hats!
is okay dude (or dudette, in which case, forgive me), just as there is something for everyone, a genre in each kind of music, there too is a genre in music generation. yes is wordy, just that i personally, simply can't label something i can or can't identify with, as better or worse. what i will try is to listen to feel if there's a connection. so, i think is more about connection, but how each person marches with time is, of course, that's that person's journey.
@tiptoetonight I was nearly 13 in 1975 and listened to this song all the time--my sister is nine years older than me. I didn't appreciate it as much then either...I truly miss these kinds of songs though--you hit the nail on the head! And yes, things at least SEEMED better then.....There's alot of us that miss those times.
@buba666able 'Cause your congressman voted to allow the public airwaves to be owned and operated by a few giant entities who tell dj's what to play, public be damned!
This song is so mystical, mysterious and really touches my soul, I envision myself riding on a horse and escaping to unknown territory in search of love.
This is the version I remember but with an asterisk. The stations would cut off those opening & closing piano codas because...well, take a wild guess. But I don't think they add much; the body of the song stands fine on its own. I do take issue w/ one verse; "Oh they say she died one winter, when there came a killing frost." Now that's cold.
THIS is the version I like best! Thanks so much for uploading this..don't ever take it down please. I'll put it onto my mp3 and when the pain gets too much I'll just crawl into bed and put in through my ear phones. You've no idea how songs like this help me to live with the physical and emotional pain I suffer. It's acts like a soothing elixir of pain relieveing magic. Thanks for helping me tolerate pain. Mike from Canada
@tyme4mike I've been there... the bed, the headsets, the unrelenting pain. I don't pretend to understand why suffering is a part of this life, but when the pain sucks the most, TURN to God, not away, as most of us instinctively do. I like to think God gave us music like this to make the pain more bearable. If it helps to vent, you can message me anytime. I've battled my pain for 20 years.
@tyme4mike Your so pitiful. Physical and emotional pain. I swear this world is so full of people saying "pitiful me, I so bad off". If your that bad off you need to die and free up room for civilization.
@blparker1980 And I swear this world is so full of heartless, unfeeling sacks of shit like yourself. You'd walk by a woman getting beaten and raped or sneer at a child living on the street, because you can't even substantiate your reason for living or being alive. Emotionally devoid scumbags like you need to throw themselves in front of oncoming trains and leave more room for those who desire to make the world a better place because they have something called heart.
Well, I may have been a tad over 8 or 9 when I heard this song for the first time in '75 but who's counting. What I do recall was the permanent crease it put in the hearts and minds of everyone it touched. Destined to be a classic from day one. This song evokes so many wonderful memories during the mid 70's of an age not yet tarnished from the summer of love era. Thank you so much (beautiv) for sharing this wonderful video montage of Wildfife, running through the shadows of yesteryear.
What's not to like??!! This is so beautiful, but I think his music is equal parts folk and country. I am not a country music person but I still love all his recordings. It's a fine line here. Also he has such a great presence on stage. His performances are mesmerizing.
Just saw Murphy sing this song on Legends and Lyrics ~ the series about songwriters on PBS.
Thank you for posting the original version and the effort and time it took to create the slide show.
I was in my early 20's when this LP was released and a hit. I'd set the arm on my record player's turntable to replay this song over and over. I'd sing along and imagine I was the gal in Nebraska riding my pony. A sad but beautiful song of love.
Yet another SUPERB slideshow that coincides with a 70's classic!!! Snow-covered mountains such as these are the reason why I live for both summer and winter!!

So many things were WAY better back then.
tiptoetonight 1 year ago 25

This song is so mystical, mysterious and really touches my soul, I envision myself riding on a horse and escaping to unknown territory in search of love.

A great song, what more can I say
bigbarry999 1 year ago

@tyme4mike This kind of music is relaxing and helps me deal with my pain too. I call it "melancholy music". Melancholy in good way.

@skylerep Thanks for the nice words. He does bless me, but pain sucks regardless. LOLOL

If your that bad off you need to die and free up room for civilization.
blparker1980 1 year ago
