  • Please put more Rosin on your bow. It is scratching to hard on the strings and should not do this. Invest in a good teacher would be wonderful and benefit you from making the common mistakes. I am a beginner too and I just found my self a tteacher. I start my first lesson next Wedsnday. One more thing. Your right arm, think of your bow like you having a women in your arm. Honestly man. Swinging the bow the right way it makes it sound better. You are not getting the perfect pitch!

  • my honest opinion, like others have said is that you find a teacher, atleast for the first level, get the basics right, the bowing, the finger placement, arm motion et cetera , and the move on to self teaching and video lessons. that is what i plan to do. anyway godspeed man, keep playin!!

  • @bearpalomo good effort man. i think you are self taught. i can relate, i taught myself guitar, and i quite decent really, totally off of online vids, lessons and tabs. I've been learning violin for 2 months now, and from what i've seen, violin is much too complicated to be self taught, atleast at the basic level. You've got the bow, no frets, intonation, left hand, right hand positions, very complicated bro.

  • the violin needs to be tuned. lesson one - TUNING

  • try to bow using your elbow. When you play, use your fingertips. not the whole finger. when you do vibrato, you do not shake ur wrist. you're not supposed to move your wrist. instead, you use your arm. good luck and have fun :)

  • Bad bad bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • use a shoulder rest for crying out loud! anyone who plays the violin knows to use one. and your chin should go on the chin rest.

  • when pulling the bow use your wrist. not your whole arm. thats why it sounds so awful. I've been playing since i was 4 and i am 22. And you really need lessons. Cause your not a natural. And do not try and go beyond what you think you can. also, thats a really cheap violin. And vibrato you DO NOT need to be trying right now. You need to do that later when you actually know how to play

  • erm...i really think you should look for a violin teacher....cause you need to learn to use more bow and also your finger placement is not accurate though. I'm afraid you will adopt the wrong habit in playing violin in the future.

  • the deal is, that violin is MADE IN CHINA ! hahahaha

  • Go find a good violin teacher and start from the scratch how to play the violin.Do not make a fool of yourself on the net

  • i want to know sir, what is the best brand of violin??

  • @shutupLau I hear Stradivarius are pretty good

  • Well done. Keep up the good job.

  • great job! now practice that song slow... with full bows making sure every note is right. push and pull the bow across the string, dont just set it. nice not collapsed wrist!! use your wrist as your main pivet point. very good!! :D

  • Intonation(play the correct notes). Put your chin on the CHIN red, not the tailpiece. Make sure not to slur all the notes together. Make sure each note is clear and precise. Watching your bowing, keep it straight, and on your vibrato don't limit your hand, give it more of a rocking motion. A good tip for vibrato is to place scales doing vibrato. For music, get a beginners book and do those exercises in there. :) Hope I helped!

  • well first of all use a longer bow!!!

  • Breathe, relax, enjoy the process, stay loose, stay single for awhile so you can play endlessly and shamelessly into the night and practice everything a thousand times over and over again. Don't give up! As an adult you'll be tempted many times to say "ah, screw it!" because of the pain and frustration you'll experience. Play through that stage to the next level and then to the next. Someday the violin may play you! ASAP, move up to a better bow and instrument as well as good strings. Enjoy!

  • Volatile314 asked me how tuning by eye will help train a person's ears.

My answer is that by making sure that every note you hear is on pitch, your brain will become accustomed to hearing perfect pitch.

You must minimize your exposure to notes that are out of tune in order to prevent your brain from becoming comfortable with notes that are slightly off.

The tuner just gives feedback until you can recognize the difference.

  • Don't tune your violin by trying to match the notes generated by a tuner. As a beginner your ears will have difficulty telling you when you've achieved the exact pitch.

Get a chromatic tuner that clamps to the scroll and picks up vibration directly from the violin. This will allow you to tune the violin even in a noisy room using your eyes instead of your ears.

After you tune the open strings, leave the tuner on as you play to help find the exact finger placement needed for other notes.

  • I recommend to tune the violin first. You are not only learning to play an instrument but training your ear. Also, get a shoulder rest for support which will help to relax both of your hands. Keep practicing!

  • Keep your wrist straight.

  • I would first of all get a shoulder rest, this will help support your instrument and make it a bit more comfortable. Second I would slow the pieces down a bit and work on clarity rather than vibrato. Your wrist is canceling out any movement from your arm and vice-versa. Try arm vibrato first by keeping your wrist firm and allowing your fingers to roll (a shoulder rest will help here too). Instead of arm vibrato you could try wrist vibrato which is pretty much the opposite, good luck n practice

  • you dont want to move your entire arm. you should only be moving your arm between your elbow to your wrist bc you'll find your bow going too close to the bridge or too close to the fingerboard. and as for the way you hold your bow, make your middle finger & ring finger more into a 90 degree angle. other than that, keep practicing. maybe get a tutor? lol, keep it up buddy =)

  • I know this was posted sometime ago, but my reccomendation is that you play all of those songs veryvery slow, to get intonation and pitch, then slowly increase speed, then loosen up your wrist, and arm, and also i would reccomend a shouldar rest, it makes it easier, your doing really well! Keep up the hard work!

  • you are doing well :) keep practicing

  • try not to pull the bow using your entire arm

but pull it using your elbow and that will give you a straight bow if you keep on practicing [look in a mirror]

  • try applying less pressure on the strings and using more bow

  • Do you have a teacher?

  • 3) continue watching Todd Ehles Videos, Im a personal student of his and in my opinion he is one the greatest violinists alive.

4)i suggest aquiring pieces you would like to play no matter what difficulty and starting slowly on them so that you can enjoy playing but at the same time scales and the suzuki books should be practiced heavily, good luck and PROPS for starting at the age you are if you have any questions message

  • 1) take the tip of your pinkie off the top off the bow let the pinkie lay with the top line under your first pinkie knuckle lay on the bow without any weight.2)get a shoulder rest. they are about 7-10 $ for a cheap one, it will take away you having to squeeze the violin to your body and make it easier to vibrate.

  • I suggest laying your jaw on the chin rest, so that it can support your instrument more and prevent shaking while you're doing vibrato. Use more bow, and relax.

  • Apart from those, just remember to keep up the good work and dont get discouraged. Good luck!

  • (3) Practice Practice Practice. Im sure by now your even better, but just rememeber, its more than getting all the notes in order, you have to get them in pefect pitch each time! Practice getting the notes pitch perfect with every try, THEN go for perfection in note order.

    (4) RELAX. You seriously looked like you were gonna break that violin in two. Remember, the violin responds best to fluid motions and full motion. You are in control, you are the master of your instrument

  • Hey man, just wanna say you're pretty guttsey to pick violin a your instrument. Its the most difficult to learn. Ok, the flaws i saw were:

    (1) You need to put your chin in the chin rest! that's what it's there for! You will find you have more support that way, and it free's up your left hand more.

    (2) remember, the bow isnt called the bow for a bowed movement. When you drag the bow across the strings, try to stay perpendicular to the strings, dont pull it back towards yourself, go out......

  • I think the reason why he doesn't have his chin on the chin rest is because he doesn't have a shoulder rest. But yeah i agree.

Get a shoulder rest, is my tip.

  • For example: holding the violin horizontally as much as possible, having some wrist flexibility when using the bow (its too stiff), using the full bow, getting accurate tone, etc. I would also recommend tackling down stuff like vibrato and bow technique later in the learning process. If you need help with basic repertoire and other tips, get in touch! And by the way, KEEP IT UP!

  • OK If I understand properly, youre just learning the violin through the online videos or media? I definitely encourage you to take real lessons in person with a teacher. There are certainly great tips online and some great teachers sharing their knowledge with the world. However, you do need immediate feedback to correct a good number of basics that may become bad habits that you will develop with time (I know it from my own challenges as an adult learner).

  • I have 7 years of experience on violin all I have to say is tune your violin and practice more scales and fingering.

  • Try tuning it, And Check and see if your bow hand right, Push a little harder

  • 5 years violin experience, 3 years viola before that, and I am concertmaster of my orchestra. I would suggest moving your bow arm more, that would make your tone quality skyrocket, and maybe practice some scales, because your first finger notes were a bit flat.

The vibrato at the end looked good, and its good that you are working on it, because its really important.

Its great to see that you have interest in learning to play the best instrument EVER!!

  • Sure he can.

  • for one, yur way too flexed

solve this problem by getting a shoulder rest

two, if you have a mirror (if you dont get one XD), stand in front of it to practice. you should see yur bow sliding in its place. it should move horizontally without a waver. your hand position is good

your main problem is your bow hand and your shoulders. your bow hand is much to tight. your pinkie should just touch the bow because it should be relaxed. your index finger shouldnt hang like that.

  • when holding bow, relax somee by putting sum weight on your elbow

its a relaxed feel, let it your arm kinda hang~

shoulder rest will def help your posture, you want to keep your violin kinda at eye level~ and 180 degrees kinda and a shoulder rest will help you with that

    your bowhold looks nice!

    keep it up!!

hope my tidbit of advice helpss

and lemme know if u need any more tips

    =]

  • once you lern vibrato you can play it on every notes, but deff get a shoulder rest kunn is the best, you wont be sorry if you get one, it is really worth it

  • ive been plaing the violin for 5 years, and im my schools concert master, i can give you some advice, first of, you should really have a shoulder rest, it something that will help your violin be more sturdy and easier to hold, also your bowing had, your picking should be curved not flat as should all your fingers be curved. also play more with your wrist rather than your entire arm, and i agree that you need to practice your vibrato, try it in 3rd positon with your 3rd finger, its much easier

  • When adding vibrato, dont over do it. try to imagine a singer singing with all vibrato on each notes, it will sound like a goat... not pleasant right? we put vibrato to either extend or sustain the notes and to somehow add emphasis on that note. not all notes are required to have vibrato

  • I would suggest you make use of more bow, longer bow stroke, try use the middle part of the bow to make less scratchy sound. By the way, where's the vibrato?

  • I thought that's what I was doing when I'm shaking my wrist... the end part? no?

  • Hi Bear, nice job, your vibrato is kinda stiff(2:20 to end), try to experiment and discover how to make your violin sing, it will sing. For now, it sounds like this with vibrato. Ek ek ek ek with those scratchy sound stiff vibrato. you know what i mean? try compare yourself and check the kids on how they do it. thanks

  • hey honey A little more practice is all it takes USE more of yor bow and dont have wrist disease push that wrist back dont be afraid to play out! =[

  • the deal is, that violin is MADE IN CHINA ! hahahaha

  • your out of tune a lot

    >:]

  • i think you should use much much more of your bow. i my class, a lot of students had problems with that. if you work on that, i'm sure you will sound wonderful. Good luck! =)

  • That commentary is by somebody pretending to be snigull. It´s not by me(The actual Snigull). I think it´s by my brother.

  • It's ok.just a little more practice i think

  • Very ambitious! As a fellow learner, I'd suggest the following: slow each section down and practice it till it drives you bonkers before speeding up - should get you precision. Work on keeping your bow straight, try not to hold it to the strings so hard - enjoy letting it flow. Good luck and keep posting!

  • I started off learning violin exclusively through watching videos posted by ProfessorV and other musicians such as BenChanViolin. I believe the most important lesson I learned from them was to find a teacher. A teacher can provide you with focus and experience and feedback that videos simply cannot, regardless of how informative they are. Videos are, however, a wonderful resource you can use to help reinforce what your teacher is showing you.

  • It' a 4/4, full size.. they don't come any bigger.... do they?

  • dude..that violin is way to small for u. but great playing! just be sure to move ur wrist and lower arm instead of ur upper arm
