There is a substantial history of violence associated with Christianity, as well as Islam. However, interpreting 1500-2000 year old passages literally is absurd. There have been drastic changes in culture, politics, science, and every other aspect of human society.

If you read Deuteronomy 20 through a particular lens you might perceive it to rationalize (or even encourage) genocide and rape. Of course Christian scholars would (correctly) cite relevant historical context. The same is true of any ancient work. There are radicals on both sides that fail to do this.
