In the book it explains things further but to make a long story short; the 4 people were called to Dumbledore's office and put under an enchantment that made them unconscious but let them breath safely underwater. Then they were taken to the lake. That's why they were asleep the entire time underwater.

Sides, Harry got tons of help from Hermione (who is, in fact, a girl) and Fleur proved she could hold her own in later books. It said in the book that the creators of the Triwizard Tournament took precautions this time to ensure the competitors' and everyone else's safety because of all the accidents that happened in the other tournaments which caused deaths. So we're not sure what would happen exactly, but they wouldn't drown or anything. Contrary to how it is in the movie, the merpeople are actually friendly with Dumbledore, so they probably would've helped the subjects out for him.
