One of my best missions (besides winning my Master's Pin), I was following a barge w/ my Speck when the barge in front of me smacked into another barge. Both stopped cold, and I did the classic jump over both. Heard later the entire site was laughing there bleeps off.
When I won my RP Master's pin, I did it the old fashioned way, took the number two slot with the only Quark on the field, Excel was the Master that beat my by just over 200 on the tourney score. My Call sign's Archer.
I remember my best moment in Red Planet. Was in a Tarantula during a game of Football. Now, my team's Bug was right behind me waiting for the doors to open, and we knew -someone- was there on the other side, just not that they were two enemy Tarantulas. I hit a triple boost from a dead stop as soon as the doors opened, and knocked them both sideways into the walls, destroying them. After the match, they admitted they could only see ONE blip on their radar..our Bug. When they saw ME, "eep!"
Oh, god, does this take me back...I remember first seeing this on Sci-Fi channel when they ran the VWE Finals, then finding out there was a Virtual World near my hometown...I loved that place! I used to hit that place practically every weekend with my dad and uncle; they were crazy about Red Planet, always trying to nail a quad-boost on a Bug-class and splattering on a wall as I blew by in them, laughing. Good times, good memories...
I went to this place in Las Vegas every time I went there for vacation. I still have the membership card. There was this game, and the Battel Tech game. I remember sitting in the pods and there was "DO NOT EAT' painted on the arm pads. They need a place like this somewhere now. I still would pay $10 to do this again.
I played this Vegas on vacation when I was 16. My mom wouldn't let me play until I explained that the line in the Passport about "low casualty rate" was a joke.
Man VW must have really tanked. Good memories though. Fun Games. Wish they still had locations like they used to. No one liked paying 10 bucks for a 15 min video game though.
What I loved most about Virtual World is that it was NOT just a computer videogame. Going to a real physical location that had a bar and food. Sitting around chatting with other pilots. Watching other games in progress and cheering the victors and the crashes. It really had the feel of an actual SPORT. The backstory of the Virtual Geographic League with it's vaguely Victorian "steampunk" origins and secret history was wonderful.
Wow. This brings back memories. I was a regular at the Dallas Virtual World back in the day. I wasn't THE most skilled pilot - but I was good. Call me "veteran level". I think I may still have some old race record sheets squirreled away too.
My friends and I flew at the Dallas location too. I liked both Red Planet and the BattleMech game they had, but vastly preferred Red Planet. Found a VHS we had made of one of the races we were in and got it xfer'd to DVD for posterity! Maybe I'll have to post it...
I cannot express my happiness at seeing this video on YouTube. Back in the 3.0 days I was a master level pilot and even competed in the 1996 Virtual World Cup. Man I miss this game....
