@volbound1700 Actually, it is. More ships were involved. The cause was simpler in Jedi, but there was far more instances involved in the Dominion war. More ships, more stations, and a race against time before the population on Cardassia would have been eliminated. Jedi had one station. Many fighters, and a cool ground battle with the natives of Endor. However, both had some righteous fights with their respective battles. Apples and Oranges, but both are good fruit.

You wonder why starfleet never developed drone fleets. Unmanned starships could attack with 100% power, not having to power life support or crew-dependent systems. No medical bays would be necessary.
@TheGreatLink In "The Best Of Both Worlds part 2, the Mars defense perimeter dispatched three 'unmanned' ships that were immediately destroyed. I am not sure that it was true in canon, but it has been written as such in the script. Those ships were reused as the soliton sled, and the three transport ships in Generations.
@TheGreatLink The fact that they don't have that ability and their last attemp destroyed a Constitution Class and killed around 800 people makes them careful about trying are 2 important factors.
Fun Fact: the Cardassian officer who saves Damar, Kira, and Garak played Engineer Olson in Star Trek. At least here he got to kick some Dominion arse!
Someone give me an answer. Would all these forces stand up to the borg. Here is the scenario. All Dominion ships with Federation, Cardassia, Klingon, and Romulan. All Alpha Quadrant species before war. So all species and empires are their strongest. And say there is a fleet of borg cubes coming to assimilate entire alpha quadrant with all dominion forces sitting near Bajoran wormhole. Would borg win. I think yes cause they have numbers in Delta Quandrant. What do you think people. Do tell.
im pretty sure the dominion alone can kick the borgs ass. the dominion was pretty much winning the war 3 months into it, and coulda won had the prophets not sealed the wormhole. By the time of the battle of cardassia, they had close to 50,000 ships, and were beating the shit outta the romulans, feds, and klingons. Only reason they lost the battle of cardassia is because the resistance cut off communication from cardassia to dominion reinforcements- in which they woulda easily won the battle.
Borg has more than 1 trillion units, and one borg cube has 6 milion units, that would mean 1 million borg cubes against all other, i dont think that other species would have a chance. Actually borgs have assimilated some dominions, small amount, smaller than humans and other species but small amount of dominions (look for it on internet) i dont think dominions would win...
1 borg cube does not have 6 million units, it has close to over 15k drones. borg survive on assimilating other species ti build their army. dominion can replicate their army within a single week, thus giving them a numerical advantage.
plus, the dominion conquered the entire gamma quadrant- did the borg conquer the delta quadrant? No.
also, dominion ships and weapons centuries ahead the federation, plus their ships can be built alot bigger, making them a deadly foe to the borg.
well if just a fleet of cubes, then no the borgs would be destroyed but the thing is, borg has more that 6 trillion of population. If every borg cube has more than 6 milion borgs in, and if every cube goes to attack that is about 1 million cubes, then actually i dont think other species would have a chance. But that is my oppinion.
I don't think the Borg would be able to compete with the Dominion. Due to the Jem'Hadar need for White so assimilating them would be pointless. Also the founders can't be assimilated, the only weak point is the Vorta and they could be killed easily. The Dominion would just keep cloning Jem'Hadar while the Borg would lose in terms of man power in a long drawn out war. The Federation only won due to the use if Biological warfare...Where is the Federation ethics on that one eh?
hell- captain picard in that episode with "Hugh" almost did, and it was a spur of the moment kind of thinking. Im sure the dominion would create a super advanced computerized virus that would render all borg neutralized.

Overall the Galaxy class is the least battle stable ship in comparison to most classes. It was designed during a time when quality of life was emphasized. The refit to the Venture class helped. The Defiant on the other hand was a pure warship from the beginning to the point of violating Federation dogma on starship design. The Federation is an egalatarian society that preached peace. The Defiant was a contradiction to those ideals, but a needed one.
The Galaxy Class was designed as a multirole vessel that CARRIED families. At the time of its "birth" Starfleet focused on the quality of life rather than pure combat capabilities. Its biggest asset was its phaser array. Without its saucer section (such a large target profile), the drive section would be a formidable warship. In the Enterprise-D model, there was a detailed description of the Galaxy class. It was noted that this generation of Enterprise was the least battle stable.
The galaxy class was one of the most powerful ships in the fleet, and entire sections could be removed and replaced. I don't see what the problem was with the ship, after the debacle of the Odyssey, the ships performed well in combat.
The Venture refit project made the Galaxy Class more formidible. Especially after the Borg introduction Starfleet began upping the combat effectiveness of all its ships (if applicable, nothing can save the Miranda class). The Galaxy Class is the BEST exploration vessel Starfleet ever created, but as a warship it was outclassed. The Soveriegn, Defiant and Akira Classes are the best examples of Starfleet embracing a combat oriented role (Bet Kirk would of loved those).
God, why do the galaxy class ships suck so much in this? We've seen how much firepower the enterprise can put out...why can't the other ships fire all phasers? It beats just one...
Even with it being old, what I mean is this: Look at scenes of the Enterprise firing all phasers and weapons--it's amazing. Several phaser banks and such firing, rather than one. Sounds like a special effects budget, to me...
Galaxy - 11 Phaser arrays (13 for the Venture), 2 Torpedo Launchers (maybe 3, all capable of burst firing). The Defiant doesn't have as many weapons a Galaxy has.
The Defiant class was originally built to fight the Borg but during the Dominion war, the ships needed a serious refit seeing as the original weaponry of the ships was insufficiant
The Defiant's weapons were never changed from the day it was launched. The only mods it needed were ones to prevent it from shreading itself when using full power and the later anti-Breen adaption to the Shields.
Why do the Dominion battleships look so much bigger at the end of the episode. One website said: Note that the Dreadnoughts appearing in this scene may be Dominion Battleships rendered larger than their true size due to poor special effects.
probably because they used the footage and looped it in different battles. Generating scifi effects is really expensive, so the costs for completely making huge scifi battles is way higher. They did have to keep within a budget unfortunately, otherwise i'm sure each battle would have looked completely different
Bah, so much recycled battle footage. I remember anticipating this final episode only to watch the same scenes from previous years. Anti-climatic for sure.
No, Odo saved the planet by curing the founder of her disease and getting her to surrender her forces. Had Odo no done that, the whole planet would have been destroyed and most of the ships on both sides would have been destroyed, as well.
The fleet had nothing to do with Cardassia. The Dominion would have fought the fleet until the end, and there wouldn't have been any Cardassians left on the planet by the time the battle finished. Odo saved the day, and only Odo.

This is the best Sci-fi battle no other series or movie comes close. So many great scenes The Defiant pursing the Breen ship with the Excelsior class ship taking a hit to the bridge in the backround, The Miranda classes getting hammered, The Jem'Hadar suicide runs, The Galaxy Class firing it's phasers with the Defiant evading Jem'Hadar fighters, and when the Cartesian's switch sides and save the Defiant was just epic.
They could have done better. Actually a lot of the scenes don't fit in. In a lot of them there aren't any romulans or breen, and in some there aren't even any klingongs. For some reason the producers of DS9 went cheap for their biggest battle, and so a great deal of the final battle had been used in other episodes and movies. I don't see what is so "great" about using old footage that doesn't fit in with the rest of the episode.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
me too about the bigger final space battle I wanted to see much more of the Alliances Fleet attacking the Dominion Force and show who the better ships, however I liked pah-wraith story but they could have done less of it.
I am confused! What kind of ships are those in the allied fleet, which aren´t of the Star fleet, the Klingons or the Romulans? I guess I missed something.
Some of those ships belong to the smaller resistance forces, who haven't joined the alliance, as well as smaller Federation (etc) vessels like the Runabouts, Shuttle craft et cetera - think of them like the Mars Defence Fleet seen in "Best of Both Worlds" (TNG) or the Marquis (DS9 and VOY)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Both Klingon and Romulan ships, if you are referring to the smaller fighters, they are Federation Peregrine class fighters. Cardassian ships join the battle later on, leaving the Jem'Hadar and the Breen to fight the Allies.
It's heroic how the Cardassian military turns on The Dominion... right in the midsts of the battle. This is excellent. I just wish The Founder would've fought on to the bitter end rather than surrendering. It would have been an epic ending. I mean check out that defense perimeter. I've never seen so many ships surrounding ONE PLANET. If The Founder would've given the order to fight till the end, The Federation would've had a hard time breaking through that kind of perimeter. Very hard indeed.

You would think, for a species that lives over 300 years, the Founders would have been smart enough not to broadcast the leveling and complete destruction of Cardassia to the Cardassian vessels among their fleet. It's no wonder they ended up losing.
But then, what do you expect from mere changelings?
The destruction of Cardassia came AFTER the Cardassian military betrayed The Dominion/Breen Confederacy. When The Founder was notified by Ambassador Weyoun that the Cardassians had turned against The Dominion/Breen Confederacy, she gave the instruction to eliminate Cardassia.
Sorry for that, I did not intentionally do it! I'm with you, Star Trek battle scenes are usually completely implausible. This one is no exception. All these unnamed ships all of a sudden have no shields whatsoever and the klingons stop using their cloaking devices within battle etc. It also bewilders me that the Starfleet while having replicators to create anything out of thin air does not have the capacity to build more than 2-4 (?) Defiant class ships haha and therefore sends in non-warships.
The Dominion has technology to see through cloaks, so its dangerous to cloak since you have no shields with the cloak.
Federation shields are practically useless against Dominion weapons, so Starfleet probably equipped all ships with ablative armor instead, so the power from the shields now goes to weapons instead.
Replicators require a lot of energy to creat complex and strong materials needed for starships. some materials (like Dilithium crystals) can't be replicated at all.
no in a DS9 ep. the Dominion is shocked to learn that they can no longer fire trough starfleet shilds. Starfleet solved that problem long before the big battles, and i remember a ep where the Defiant was under cloak and the Dominion din't see them.
I believe I have seen the Defiant use cloak to get behind enemy lines a lot.
Well, I remember that on some fed/klingon ships I saw the familiar blue shield effect under dominion fire, while on others I did not. Also, ablative armour (as seen in VOY) is a future technology that even renders borg weapons near useless. No way they had that equipped.
Ok, that's a sound argument. Still why would starfleet send a fleet of which the vast majority of ships is primarily used as science vessels?
Why was it okay for Definat to have a cloak- but a great crime for the USS Pegasus to have a cloak? Capt Piccard arrested the former Pegasus capt for violating the Treaty of Algernon- wern't the makers of Definat guilty of the same crime?
The ablative armour seen in Voyager will most likely have been confiscated due to the temporal prime directive. In response to the other comments, the cloak was given to the federation to be used only in the Gamma quadrant and only in exchange for all data they gathered on the Dominion to be given to the Romulan government.
you know what is even more strange? in a way the war is between the Alpha-Beta and Gamma quadrant. so Dominion, Cardassians, Klingons, Breen, Romulans and UFP fight in this war, but were are the other superpowers? Vulcans, Ferengi, Andorians, Gorn, Tholians, Telerites. Orions, sure some are part of the UPF, but stil have armys of there own. how cool would it have been: Sisko asking the help of the Gorn! or Spock to help with the Romulans?
Vulcans are part of the UFP (founding member afaik). Ferengi do not wage wars unless they turn up profits ;) As for the others: idk. On a general note: I think that Star Trek always has been and always will be best, when it can be inconsistent with story and background and focus on consistently solving ethical and social problems. At any rate, TNG was very good in that respect.
in one episode Weyoun mentioned that there were other races fighting against them.
We know that the Bajorans abandoned their non-agression tready after the Dominion redrew from their system, and were activally participating in the war against the Dominion. so many other planets did the same. some planets took the Dominion's side (like the Sona)
the Ferengi were on the Federation's side although not actively involved in the war, but aiding in logistical support.
well i have not seen DS9 in a time, but yeah i do remember that they talked about the Sona.
any idea about the Gorn, Andorians (part of UPF i know but they should still have ships of there own) or the First Federation? maybe Weyoun was talking about them? you cant just take the Alpha quadrant, even the Borg know that!
weyoun said "the federation, romulans, klingons, and ALL the others that stand against us".
the races you mentioned are all part of the Federation, so this means automatically they are also fighting against the Dominion. their people serve on starfleet ships and their planets are actively involved in the war. (betazed was even conquered by the Dominion). their militas had probably been absorbed in starfleet. we also heard somethings about "fighting on the vulcan border" and a "bolian operation"
to bad we never saw the 'others' you forget that if a planet becomes part of the UPF, doesn't mean that planet gives up its culture (including its millitary) they don't give up what they are. its a 'united' federation afterall. like the UN, -say- Belgium cant comand the ships of -say- Germany, but a person of German origin can be part of the US army. they work together yes. as for the Gorn, are they part of the UPF?
The UFP is like the USA. Both are made up of dozens of smaller republics united under the one federal government. Each state has a degree of autonomy but they all members of the one union. Each member is in control of their day-to-day affairs but the federal government has control of the union as a whole. If the UFP or USA go to war, the entire union goes to war.
no the UPF was based on the UN. (United Nations) but i guess the idea is the same.
however the Star trek UFP was never really explaned on the show(s) itself. but there is a President, and it has been said that planets in the UFP work together without loseing there autonomy or culture. after 40 years we still don't really know what the every day life is like in the UPF, all we have seen is what life is like in Starfleet.
So, the final showdown between the Federation Alliance and the Dominion begins, with Damar, Garak, and Kira charging toward the Dominion's headquarters on Cardassia Prime. I thoroughly enjoyed that series finale... in retrospect.
just when it was getting good too. the best episodes were from season 4,5,6. but the story didn't end there--it was left open deliberately by the writers for future stories, movies.
yep. And Riker and Troy are on vacation on Earth (as stated in an episode of season six of Voyager, the one about Barclay discovering a way to contact Voyager). So I guess Starfleet is not really that concerned about the Dominion if they allow their officers shore leave during a time of war. the entire DS9 senior crew also went into the holodeck for days on more than one occasion during the war
I don't buy it. The Breen are the only people in Star Trek that are speaking thru something all the time and their voice is always garbled... shouldn't there be like a double voice for everyone? I'm not really complaining though.
"There will be no more running."
"Agreed" - should have been "Speak for yourself!" in keeping with the Breen displaying their general awesomeness through subs. :P
This is great though, cheers!

The Defiant's weapons were never changed from the day it was launched. The only mods it needed were ones to prevent it from shreading itself when using full power and the later anti-Breen adaption to the Shields.
vegeta002 2 years ago
No, the Klingon ships are the only vessel that seem to be immune to the breen weaponry.
Buzzwick250 2 years ago
How long has it been since you last watched the show? They developed a defence after the Cardassian rebels gave them the weapon.
The Klingon ships were just the only ones that could be made immune without examining the tech first.
vegeta002 2 years ago
Not true, Kira, Odo, Garak, and Damar took the Breen weapon from a Jem Hadar ship and the Federation developed a counter measure.

Watch "Sacrifice of Angels", and you'll see Galaxy class ships using multiple phasers.

Why do the Dominion battleships look so much bigger at the end of the episode. One website said: Note that the Dreadnoughts appearing in this scene may be Dominion Battleships rendered larger than their true size due to poor special effects.
Jessico76 2 years ago
it's simply a different class of battleship than the ones we saw earlier.
much larger ships but with the same basic design as the original dreadnoughts

All the battle scenes appear to be the same.
matrags 3 years ago
probably because they used the footage and looped it in different battles. Generating scifi effects is really expensive, so the costs for completely making huge scifi battles is way higher. They did have to keep within a budget unfortunately, otherwise i'm sure each battle would have looked completely different

The Cardassian side switch was one of the times I stood up and cheered when I first watched it.

indeed. he especially reminds me of bush back when he wanted to invade cardassia with some made up claim.

Ironically, the fleet going in fast here saves Cardassians. Had they waited, the Dominion would have wiped out the whole planet.
DEP717 3 years ago
No, Odo saved the planet by curing the founder of her disease and getting her to surrender her forces. Had Odo no done that, the whole planet would have been destroyed and most of the ships on both sides would have been destroyed, as well.

True, but the people in the battle fleet could not have know that.
You are right about Odo though.
DEP717 3 years ago

But... THEY WERE STILL GREAT!
animeownage86 3 years ago
They could have done better. Actually a lot of the scenes don't fit in. In a lot of them there aren't any romulans or breen, and in some there aren't even any klingongs. For some reason the producers of DS9 went cheap for their biggest battle, and so a great deal of the final battle had been used in other episodes and movies. I don't see what is so "great" about using old footage that doesn't fit in with the rest of the episode.
katana2570 3 years ago 15
i agree. they shouldn't have done that whole pah-wraith fire caves stuff which was cartoonish and silly, and instead make a bigger final space battle

I am confused! What kind of ships are those in the allied fleet, which aren´t of the Star fleet, the Klingons or the Romulans? I guess I missed something.
19prodigy85 3 years ago
they are cadassians?
BeniiSigma 3 years ago
Some of those ships belong to the smaller resistance forces, who haven't joined the alliance, as well as smaller Federation (etc) vessels like the Runabouts, Shuttle craft et cetera - think of them like the Mars Defence Fleet seen in "Best of Both Worlds" (TNG) or the Marquis (DS9 and VOY)
gribae 3 years ago
I think they are Starfleet attack ships, short range fighters, used to defend convoys and be quick and turn faster.
weljohn21 3 years ago

Both Klingon and Romulan ships, if you are referring to the smaller fighters, they are Federation Peregrine class fighters. Cardassian ships join the battle later on, leaving the Jem'Hadar and the Breen to fight the Allies.
Drifter114 3 years ago

But then, what do you expect from mere changelings?
gribae 3 years ago
The destruction of Cardassia came AFTER the Cardassian military betrayed The Dominion/Breen Confederacy. When The Founder was notified by Ambassador Weyoun that the Cardassians had turned against The Dominion/Breen Confederacy, she gave the instruction to eliminate Cardassia.

yeah, its always funny when people give thumbs down but cant explane why.
what i mean? simple:
Make Star trek, not War!
henkman00 3 years ago
Sorry for that, I did not intentionally do it! I'm with you, Star Trek battle scenes are usually completely implausible. This one is no exception. All these unnamed ships all of a sudden have no shields whatsoever and the klingons stop using their cloaking devices within battle etc. It also bewilders me that the Starfleet while having replicators to create anything out of thin air does not have the capacity to build more than 2-4 (?) Defiant class ships haha and therefore sends in non-warships.
leasticoulddo 3 years ago
The Dominion has technology to see through cloaks, so its dangerous to cloak since you have no shields with the cloak.
Federation shields are practically useless against Dominion weapons, so Starfleet probably equipped all ships with ablative armor instead, so the power from the shields now goes to weapons instead.
Replicators require a lot of energy to creat complex and strong materials needed for starships. some materials (like Dilithium crystals) can't be replicated at all.
TheGreatLink 3 years ago

no in a DS9 ep. the Dominion is shocked to learn that they can no longer fire trough starfleet shilds. Starfleet solved that problem long before the big battles, and i remember a ep where the Defiant was under cloak and the Dominion din't see them.
henkman00 3 years ago
I believe I have seen the Defiant use cloak to get behind enemy lines a lot.
Well, I remember that on some fed/klingon ships I saw the familiar blue shield effect under dominion fire, while on others I did not. Also, ablative armour (as seen in VOY) is a future technology that even renders borg weapons near useless. No way they had that equipped.
Ok, that's a sound argument. Still why would starfleet send a fleet of which the vast majority of ships is primarily used as science vessels?
leasticoulddo 3 years ago
Why was it okay for Definat to have a cloak- but a great crime for the USS Pegasus to have a cloak? Capt Piccard arrested the former Pegasus capt for violating the Treaty of Algernon- wern't the makers of Definat guilty of the same crime?
TitanicTarn 3 years ago
That was several years before the Dominion threat which convinced the Romulans to give the Defiant a copy, if I remember right.
TashaKheiriddinFan 3 years ago 2
you are correct. there used to be a romulan stationed on the defiant to watch over the cloak at first. then for some reason they stopped that

killswitch022 3 years ago
The ablative armour seen in Voyager will most likely have been confiscated due to the temporal prime directive. In response to the other comments, the cloak was given to the federation to be used only in the Gamma quadrant and only in exchange for all data they gathered on the Dominion to be given to the Romulan government.
Drifter114 3 years ago
leasticoulddo
you know what is even more strange? in a way the war is between the Alpha-Beta and Gamma quadrant. so Dominion, Cardassians, Klingons, Breen, Romulans and UFP fight in this war, but were are the other superpowers? Vulcans, Ferengi, Andorians, Gorn, Tholians, Telerites. Orions, sure some are part of the UPF, but stil have armys of there own. how cool would it have been: Sisko asking the help of the Gorn! or Spock to help with the Romulans?
henkman00 3 years ago
Vulcans are part of the UFP (founding member afaik). Ferengi do not wage wars unless they turn up profits ;) As for the others: idk. On a general note: I think that Star Trek always has been and always will be best, when it can be inconsistent with story and background and focus on consistently solving ethical and social problems. At any rate, TNG was very good in that respect.
leasticoulddo 3 years ago
leasticoulddo
i mean a united Alpha quadrant force. working together, even the Ferengi. Vulcan has ships of there own (see TNG)
henkman00 3 years ago
in one episode Weyoun mentioned that there were other races fighting against them.
TheGreatLink 3 years ago
well i have not seen DS9 in a time, but yeah i do remember that they talked about the Sona.
any idea about the Gorn, Andorians (part of UPF i know but they should still have ships of there own) or the First Federation? maybe Weyoun was talking about them? you cant just take the Alpha quadrant, even the Borg know that!
henkman00 3 years ago
weyoun said "the federation, romulans, klingons, and ALL the others that stand against us".
the races you mentioned are all part of the Federation, so this means automatically they are also fighting against the Dominion. their people serve on starfleet ships and their planets are actively involved in the war. (betazed was even conquered by the Dominion). their militas had probably been absorbed in starfleet. we also heard somethings about "fighting on the vulcan border" and a "bolian operation"
TheGreatLink 3 years ago
to bad we never saw the 'others' you forget that if a planet becomes part of the UPF, doesn't mean that planet gives up its culture (including its millitary) they don't give up what they are. its a 'united' federation afterall. like the UN, -say- Belgium cant comand the ships of -say- Germany, but a person of German origin can be part of the US army. they work together yes. as for the Gorn, are they part of the UPF?
henkman00 3 years ago
The UFP is like the USA. Both are made up of dozens of smaller republics united under the one federal government. Each state has a degree of autonomy but they all members of the one union. Each member is in control of their day-to-day affairs but the federal government has control of the union as a whole. If the UFP or USA go to war, the entire union goes to war.
Tprynn 3 years ago
no the UPF was based on the UN. (United Nations) but i guess the idea is the same.
however the Star trek UFP was never really explaned on the show(s) itself. but there is a President, and it has been said that planets in the UFP work together without loseing there autonomy or culture. after 40 years we still don't really know what the every day life is like in the UPF, all we have seen is what life is like in Starfleet.
henkman00 3 years ago
So, the final showdown between the Federation Alliance and the Dominion begins, with Damar, Garak, and Kira charging toward the Dominion's headquarters on Cardassia Prime. I thoroughly enjoyed that series finale... in retrospect.
