Both my Cockatiel and my African Grey do this but for different reasons. The cocky is mature and I think, looking for nesting spaces as she explores every cubby hole in the house. My Grey will fly where there's room and walk the rest of the way through the hallway to find us in our bedroom in the morning sometimes. She knows she can't fit through the door due to her wingspan, so she switches to walking the last part of the trip. Clever birds.

My cockatiel used to do that. She would flutter down from her cage to the floor and would come and find me. We were very bonded, but I had to part w/her due to not being able to have a pet in my aparment. I miss her dearly. I will NEVER do this again. I will always find a place that will allow my pets, they are like my children!

@epikhampster We used to think Luti was a boy, but one day she flew onto my dad while he was napping on the couch and the next thing we knew there was an egg! She didn't have a partner so it wasn't fertilised but from that day on we knew she was a girl. It was a bit of a shock :P

Unlike most cockatiels, lutinos are always or almost always bright white bodies and very vivid head colours, unlike the others where a female has a smokey grey face and a dull coloured body.

@epikhampster That is inaccurate. Almost all cockatiels have the orange on their cheeks and brightness is not sex dependant. There are several ways to tell if the cockatiel is male or female without DNA sexing. Male cockatiels mimick (or parrot) female cockatiels don't. Female cockateils tend to have speckles on their tail feathers, males tend not to. Then of course if the bird lays an egg then it's obvious what sex it is.

Walking on the floor like that reminds me of the budgie I had when I was a kid. He would fly upstairs to my room, but he walked on the floor once he was there. I really think he thought he was safe, since the stairs were steep and probably made him feel that he was up high.
