There are many types of universal healthcare models. Japan use government negotiated prices with the private sector, Taiwan is one of paying into the system, and then there are public option to keep prices moderate, and single payer which is centralized.
It would be the same coverage, just cheaper, and likely covers more illness and injury.

What he says is true. I lived in Canada and I have family in Canada. My cousin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer (lives in Montreal) could not get therapy in time. She had to go across the border to Platzburg, NY ( 2+hours) to get the medical attention she needed. In addition, it does take a good 6 weeks to get to see a doctor. God help you if you are sick in Canada.

My cousin was a doctor in Canada who left and immigrated to the US because of his frustration with the medical system in Canada. It takes my mother & sister about 6 weeks to get just a regular appointment. My uncle died because there weren't enough dialysis machines to treat him plus the fact he was unmarried and had no dependents--bottom of the list.
@reinharv It depends on what you go in for. The difference is everyone gets treated in Canada. If you have lousy insurance policy in the US it can take much longer then that. If you have no insurance in the US you don't get treated period. So even in the extremes the fact is it might take awhile but you will still be treated whereas in the US you don't get treated. I lived in Canada for almost 27 years.

I could go on and on, especially as I am disabled and require constant care. In the past 5 years I've never waited more than 2 hours in the emergency rooms I've had to visit. Also, my nearly $1,00o/month prescriptions? Covered! My grandmother had a plate put in her leg 4 days after she broke it.

The less evasive procedure was not available in his small, lighted populated country. I have developed a shoulder problem which an MRI may (! no guarantee) be able explain. I may wait a few months in Finland for a public MRI (cost to me 27 euros)given that its not that urgent but I checked in advance the cost of a private MRI shoulder exam. The cost is about 800 euros incl. the report which the social insurance institution will reduce to about 400. The cost in the USA? Aparently anything from 2,500-7,000 dollars!!!
When I suffered a grade 3 acromioclvicular separation this past spring, I discovered that surgery is an option left to the patient - both in Canada & the U.S. As I researched the options, I discovered various forums in which Americans with the same injury said that would get the surgery if they had $5,000 to spend. It's astounding that their decision was based on their personal economic situation. I got the surgery, free of charge. I'm grateful for our Canadian single payer system.
90% of MRIs in Ontario are done within 4 months. This is not the average but the 90th percentile. The average (median) wait time will be much lower - who knows but maybe 60 days. Sure that means that the situation in Ontario is worse than that for Canada overall, but then you would expect someone like Gratzer to present the worst case and make out that this is typical.
Access is according to need not the size of your wallet.

While I do agree on other topics that you brought up regarding spending and such, I absolutely believe a universal health care system is something the U.S. should embrace. Look up information about the U.S. (overall citizen health vs. that of other countries, infant mortality rate, etc.) - our health care system simply does not work.
Canadian health care isn't as glamorous as Kucinich is making it seem. In order to get a CT scan I had to wait 6 months, 9 months for a colonoscopy. And a friend of mine who had kidney failure has to wait 2 - 5 years to get new kidneys, even though it could have been prevented with a transplant in his younger years...
On the upside, we get to see docs for free, certain meds are free/cheaper and we can actually get surgeries done soon if needed. Its not perfect, but its better than nothing

There is NO wait times for emergency CT's or colonoscopies. Waiting for a kidney has nothing to do with the system, and everything to do with when someone dies.

The wait times for organ transplant are the same anywhere in the world, you may wait 6 months or two years. How can you even use this as an example of the CND Health Care system, they have no control wether an organ becomes available.

What he says is true. I lived in Canada and I have family in Canada. My cousin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer (lives in Montreal) could not get therapy in time. She had to go across the border to Platzburg, NY ( 2+hours) to get the medical attention she needed. In addition, it does take a good 6 weeks to get to see a doctor. God help you if you are sick in Canada.

My cousin was a doctor in Canada who left and immigrated to the US because of his frustration with the medical system in Canada. It takes my mother & sister about 6 weeks to get just a regular appointment. My uncle died because there weren't enough dialysis machines to treat him plus the fact he was unmarried and had no dependents--bottom of the list.

@reinharv It depends on what you go in for. The difference is everyone gets treated in Canada. If you have lousy insurance policy in the US it can take much longer then that. If you have no insurance in the US you don't get treated period. So even in the extremes the fact is it might take awhile but you will still be treated whereas in the US you don't get treated. I lived in Canada for almost 27 years.

I could go on and on, especially as I am disabled and require constant care. In the past 5 years I've never waited more than 2 hours in the emergency rooms I've had to visit. Also, my nearly $1,00o/month prescriptions? Covered! My grandmother had a plate put in her leg 4 days after she broke it.

The less evasive procedure was not available in his small, lighted populated country. I may wait a few months in Finland for a public MRI (cost to me 27 euros)given that its not that urgent but I checked in advance the cost of a private MRI shoulder exam. The cost is about 800 euros incl. the report which the social insurance institution will reduce to about 400. The cost in the USA? Aparently anything from 2,500-7,000 dollars!!!
US hospitals way overcharge for this service.

When I suffered a grade 3 acromioclvicular separation this past spring, I discovered that surgery is an option left to the patient - both in Canada & the U.S. As I researched the options, I discovered various forums in which Americans with the same injury said that would get the surgery if they had $5,000 to spend. It's astounding that their decision was based on their personal economic situation. I got the surgery, free of charge. I'm grateful for our Canadian single payer system.

90% of MRIs in Ontario are done within 4 months. This is not the average but the 90th percentile. The average (median) wait time will be much lower - who knows but maybe 60 days. Sure that means that the situation in Ontario is worse than that for Canada overall, but then you would expect someone like Gratzer to present the worst case and make out that this is typical.
Access is according to need not the size of your wallet.

@hauskalainen Exactly. Actually, if you look at the 2009 wait times report from the CIHI website, it reports 90% in 95 days in Ontario, with a median wait time of 30 days. Another thing Gratzer never mentions, is these are wait times for non-urgent diagnosis. There are no wait times for urgent care MRI's, or if you are already an inpatient. Gratzer is slime.

@mahalcat Exactly. I only waited 10 days for my sinuses to be scanned. Hardly urgent. My wife's uncle received one right away when he had massive headaches and walked into a Calgary ER.

I do agree we need reform in the American system. The points Dennis mentioned are very good examples of this. However, seeing that not many peopel trust our government anymore(Which they should not) I do not believe I want the federal government ditating my treatment. A universal health care system in America is long overdue, But this government does not have our best interest in mind. Plus y did they have 2 add all of this nonsense fluff 2 the bill?? All kinds of unconstitutional mandates in it

@bjarnet3 You are conflating many issues that are irrelevant to one another in order to make a universal health care system seem like a ridiculous option. While I do agree on other topics that you brought up regarding spending and such, I absolutely believe a universal health care system is something the U.S. should embrace. Look up information about the U.S. (overall citizen health vs. that of other countries, infant mortality rate, etc.) - our health care system simply does not work.

Canadian health care isn't as glamorous as Kucinich is making it seem. In order to get a CT scan I had to wait 6 months, 9 months for a colonoscopy. And a friend of mine who had kidney failure has to wait 2 - 5 years to get new kidneys, even though it could have been prevented with a transplant in his younger years...
On the upside, we get to see docs for free, certain meds are free/cheaper and we can actually get surgeries done soon if needed. Its not perfect, but its better than nothing

@strangelove64 First off, I waited 10 days for a non-emergency scan of my sinuses. The median wait times for CT's is measured in days for non-emergency. There is NO wait times for emergency CT's or colonoscopies. Waiting for a kidney has nothing to do with the system, and everything to do with when someone dies.

@strangelove64 Kidneys transplants are based on a perfect match of blood type and other variables, it has nothing to do with the CND system, or socialized medicine. The wait times for organ transplant are the same anywhere in the world, you may wait 6 months or two years. You basic have to wait for someone of you blood type to die, and hope the organ is still viable. How can you even use this as an example of the CND Health Care system, they have no control wether an organ becomes available.

I am surprised that Dennis Kucinich is the younger one in this exchange and be able to confront about those facts. Brothers, no ID cards can really limit how young and dare that you can be in front of reality. Life is still very dynamic to us all.
