i don't see why these black boxes can't just be like a mobile phone, constantly updating information on speed, alt etc. The pilots voices would be recorded live throughout the entire journey and then in the event of a crash, they only have to listen to the recorded transcripts back at HQ rather than searching aimlessly for these boxes

I jumped for joy at news of the crash air france flight 447. I love watching the plane sink to its watery grave. I enjoy hearing the passengers screaming for help. The sound of drowning passengers gasping for air is music to my ear. The bottom of atlantic ocean is a awesome place to sleep on. The moment the jet broke up in midair must have been a kodak moment. I'm disappointed that the death toll is so low. A bunch of bodies floating on the atlantic ocean would've been an awesome sight.

The so called 'black box' is the 'flight data recorder' or the 'cockpit voice recorder'.
In reality the boxes which contain the real devices are red/orange coloured.

All the boxes I've seen so far were yellow or orange. I haven't seen any red boxes.
I think they call it "black box" because we only look for these when a plane crashes. And black is dark and crashes are dark... So I think that's the reason why. Just to make things "more obscure" if you will...
By the way. It's a mystery. These boxes are supposed to emit underwater beacon signals. Any cheap sonar was meant to pick these signals up even from 3km. Maybe it was intentionally removed or something

No disrepect to the French and sincere condolences to their loss, as well as all others.
HOWEVER, I fear that French engineers may have played a sigficant role in mis-engineering the electronics on this plane.
You only have to look at the notoriuosly high record of unreliability in French cars...they're way behind the field when it comes to designing reliable electronics in cars. So how can we expect to feel safe on their planes?
