@crazyamazondude No they are alive. But you should pick the freshest looking ones whether you are consuming them or looking to grow them. They do treat potatoes to stop them from sprouting, this does not kill them and if you keep them long enough they will eventually sprout.
Is there a specific reason for using white bags? Could I use black bags or do they attract to much heat? Want to try this method but want to make sure I'm not doing to wrong or starting out at a disadvantage.
@GetDamage it should do well in garden soil with plenty of matured vermicompost.in india they can be perenial if not harvested .the shoots die back and regrow on 14 april.thats the planting day here for new generation.

ginger rhizomes from the super market, has already been killed so that it does not sprout!

@crazyamazondude if you keep it indoors to sprout it shouldent take long (5 - 6 weeks was my estemate)
in the summer i put it on the porch int he sun it does well for me but i reccomend searching on google "how to grow ginger from rhizomes"
