@songswedo I never fell for XY to be honest with you. It's "flat" in comparison to AB or ORTF, not enough stereo width. But it all depends on what you are micing up of course. A small kit is different to mic up than a big kit.
Yes I would agree. It does tend to depend on what kind of sound you're looking for and the room that you're in. If the room has different acoustics it can change everything as well.
@TheSlendermanuk Some cheap JJLabs DSK7 drumkit mics. They're in this bundle called DSK7 which consists of 7 microphones to record drums. Extremely cheap stuff but they work alright.
@guitarmasterjvc That probably is right. Getting good low mids and bass is not something every cheap mic is capable of doing... I don't think any of my mics are capable of that really. The tom mics for instance - I have to do some shaping with the EQ to get them to sound usable.
Not too sure what those OH mics were but they have a resemblence to the AKG perception 170's which is what i've used in the past and had great results.
@llandonify I wish! Unfortunately I'm not :) I used his music because he writes some awesome stuff and I just wanted to do my part in getting it out there.
@coolethan8 JJLabs DK7S is what the kit is called but I don't think it's easily available outside of Sweden to be honest. But it's just a low budget brand really, it shouldn't differ much from other low budget brands such as the Tbone mics from Thomann.
@StudioErdo the most accessible drum mic kit i can get my hands on is an Apex kit, I like some of the higher range mics they have but i'm not really sure how well their really really cheap drum kit mics are put together and sound. considering you have a great drum sound with these mics and you dropped on of the condensers and it still works great is a testament to their construction.
this is part1 not part3

the reason cheap mics can be good for overheads is because they usually have a bad bass response making them perfect for recording cymbals

PS what song is in the background? Great riffage
Knucklesmd 1 year ago
@Knucklesmd You may be right. The background music is from Cloudkicker. The song is called Dysphoria.

Where did you say that that ORTF mic stand came from? That's a unique stand, and at a reasonable price.
I'm surprised you don't have more views. I know there's gotta be many more home enthusiasts out there that would enjoy your input.
